Impermeability effects in three-dimensional vesicles
We analyse the effects that the impermeability constraint induces on the
equilibrium shapes of a three-dimensional vesicle hosting a rigid inclusion. A
given alteration of the inclusion and/or vesicle parameters leads to shape
modifications of different orders of magnitude, when applied to permeable or
impermeable vesicles. Moreover, the enclosed-volume constraint wrecks the
uniqueness of stationary equilibrium shapes, and gives rise to pear-shaped or
stomatocyte-like vesicles.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Elastic deformation of a fluid membrane upon colloid binding
When a colloidal particle adheres to a fluid membrane, it induces elastic
deformations in the membrane which oppose its own binding. The structural and
energetic aspects of this balance are theoretically studied within the
framework of a Helfrich Hamiltonian. Based on the full nonlinear shape
equations for the membrane profile, a line of continuous binding transitions
and a second line of discontinuous envelopment transitions are found, which
meet at an unusual triple point. The regime of low tension is studied
analytically using a small gradient expansion, while in the limit of large
tension scaling arguments are derived which quantify the asymptotic behavior of
phase boundary, degree of wrapping, and energy barrier. The maturation of
animal viruses by budding is discussed as a biological example of such

Noisy random resistor networks: renormalized field theory for the multifractal moments of the current distribution
We study the multifractal moments of the current distribution in randomly
diluted resistor networks near the percolation treshold. When an external
current is applied between to terminals and of the network, the
th multifractal moment scales as , where is the correlation length exponent of
the isotropic percolation universality class. By applying our concept of master
operators [Europhys. Lett. {\bf 51}, 539 (2000)] we calculate the family of
multifractal exponents for to two-loop order. We find

Consumer credit in comparative perspective
We review the literature in sociology and related fields on the fast global growth of consumer credit and debt and the possible explanations for this expansion. We describe the ways people interact with the strongly segmented consumer credit system around the world—more specifically, the way they access credit and the way they are held accountable for their debt. We then report on research on two areas in which consumer credit is consequential: its effects on social relations and on physical and mental health. Throughout the article, we point out national variations and discuss explanations for these differences. We conclude with a brief discussion of the future tasks and challenges of comparative research on consumer credit.Accepted manuscrip
Critical Exponents for Diluted Resistor Networks
An approach by Stephen is used to investigate the critical properties of
randomly diluted resistor networks near the percolation threshold by means of
renormalized field theory. We reformulate an existing field theory by Harris
and Lubensky. By a decomposition of the principal Feynman diagrams we obtain a
type of diagrams which again can be interpreted as resistor networks. This new
interpretation provides for an alternative way of evaluating the Feynman
diagrams for random resistor networks. We calculate the resistance crossover
exponent up to second order in , where is the spatial
dimension. Our result verifies a
previous calculation by Lubensky and Wang, which itself was based on the

Management of Polypoid Gallbladder Lesions in Children: A Multicenter Study
INTRODUCTION: Polypoid lesions of the gallbladder (PLG) are relatively common in adults, while they are very rare in children. The use of high-quality ultrasonography leads to increased detection of PLG, although less than 20 pediatric cases of primary PLG have been reported in the literature. The aim of this study was to address the experience of PLG management in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective multicenter review of children with ultrasonographically defined PLG between 2006 and 2016 was performed. The data from 12 pediatric surgery centers were compiled for this purpose.
RESULTS: Eighteen patients (mean age: 10.4 ± 4.1 years) were included and managed according to each center\u27s protocols. Cholecystectomy was performed for nine symptomatic patients. Histopathology conclusively revealed four tubular and five papillary adenomas, with a median size of 12 mm (ranging from 3 to 35 mm). Nine asymptomatic children were monitored by sonography over a 24-month (ranging from 12 to 66 months) follow-up period. The median PLG size was 7 mm (ranging from 3 to 9 mm). Two lesions disappeared after 1 and 2 years of follow-up, respectively. None of the patients developed symptoms or malignant transformation.
CONCLUSION: This report confirms appropriate use of a conservative approach with annual clinical and ultrasound follow-up for small-sized and isolated PLG in children given the absence of malignancy and potential vanishing entities. Surgical treatment should be considered in case of lesions larger than 10 mm in size or when they are associated with symptoms
Analogue peptides for the immunotherapy of human acute myeloid leukemia

However, responses are often short-lived and rarely induce notable memory responses. The reason is that self-antigens have already been presented to the immune system as the tumor develops, leading to tolerance or some degree of host tumor cell destruction. To try to break tolerance against self-antigens, one of the methods employed has been to modify peptides at the anchor residues to enhance their ability to bind major histocompatibility complex molecules, extending their exposure to the T-cell receptor. These modified or analogue peptides have been investigated as stimulators of the immune system in patients with different cancers with variable but sometimes notable success. In this review we describe the background and recent developments in the use of analogue peptides for the immunotherapy of acute myeloid leukemia describing knowledge useful for the application of analogue peptide treatments for other malignancies
Climate change adaptation options in farming communities of selected Nigerian ecological zones
This chapter examines the impacts of climate change on three tropical crops and assesses the climate change adaptation options adopted by rural farmers in the region. The study was conducted among farming communities settled in three major ecological zones in Nigeria. Over 37 years of data on rainfall and temperature were analyzed to examine climate change impacts on three major crops: rice, maize, and cassava. Farmers' adaptive capacity was assessed with a survey. Climatic data, crop yields, and survey data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The relation between rainfall/temperature and crop yields was examined using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results show a high variation in the annual rainfall and temperature during the study period. The major findings from this research is that crops in different ecological zones respond differently to climate variation. The result revealed that there is a very strong relationship between precipitation and the yield of rice and cassava at p <0.05 level of significance. The results further showed low level of adaption among the rural farmers. The study concludes that rainfall and temperature variability has a significant impact on crop yield in the study area, but that the adaptive capacity of most farmers to these impacts is low. There is a need for enhancing the adaptation options available to farmers in the region, which should be the focus of government policies
Esophageal atresia: data from a national cohort
PURPOSE: A prospective national register was established in 2008 to record all new cases of live-birth newborns with esophageal atresia (EA). This epidemiological survey was recommended as part of a national rare diseases plan.
METHODS: All 38 national centers treating EA participated by completing for each patient at first discharge a questionnaire validated by a national committee of experts. Data were centralized by the national reference center for esophageal anomalies. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed, with P-values of less than 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results of the 2008-2009 data collection are presented in this report.
RESULTS: Three hundred seven new living cases of EA were recorded between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009. The male/female sex ratio was 1.3, and the live-birth prevalence of EA was 1.8 per 10,000 births. Major characteristics were comparable to those reported in the literature. Survival was 95%, and no correlation with caseload was noted.
CONCLUSIONS: Epidemiologic surveys of congenital anomalies such as EA, which is a rare disease, provide valuable data for public health authorities and fulfill one important mission of reference centers. When compared with previous epidemiological data, this national population-based registry suggests that the incidence of EA remains stable
