First-principles study of orthorhombic CdTiO3 perovskite
In this work we perform an ab-initio study of CdTiO3 perovskite in its
orthorhombic phase using FLAPW method. Our calculations help to decide between
the different cristallographic structures proposed for this perovskite from
X-Ray measurements. We compute the electric field gradient tensor (EFG) at Cd
site and obtain excellent agreement with available experimental information
from a perturbed angular correlation (PAC) experiment. We study EFG under an
isotropic change of volume and show that in this case the widely used "point
charge model approximation" to determine EFG works quite well.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Accepted in Physical Review
Revalidation and electronic cataract surgery audit: a Scottish survey on current practice and opinion
PURPOSE: To determine current knowledge and opinion on revalidation, and methods of cataract surgery audit in Scotland and to outline the current and future possibilities for electronic cataract surgery audit. METHODS: In 2010 we conducted a prospective, cross-sectional, Scottish-wide survey on revalidation knowledge and opinion, and cataract audit practice among all senior NHS ophthalmologists. Results were anonymised and recorded manually for analysis. RESULTS: In all, 61% of the ophthalmologists surveyed took part. Only 33% felt ready to take part in revalidation, whereas 76% felt they did not have adequate information about the process. Also, 71% did not feel revalidation would improve patient care, but 85% agreed that cataract surgery audit is essential for ophthalmic practice. In addition, 91% audit their cataract outcomes; 52% do so continuously. Further, 63% audit their subspecialist surgical results. Only 25% audit their cataract surgery practice electronically, and only 12% collect clinical data using a hospital PAS system. Funding and system incompatibility were the main reasons cited for the lack of electronic audit setup. Currently, eight separate hospital IT patient administration systems are used across 14 health boards in Scotland. CONCLUSION: Revalidation is set to commence in 2012. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists will use cataract outcome audit as a tool to ensure surgical competency for the process. Retrospective manual auditing of cataract outcome is time consuming, and can be avoided with an electronic system. Scottish ophthalmologists view revalidation with scepticism and appear to have inadequate knowledge of the process. However, they strongly agree with the concept of cataract surgery audit. The existing and future electronic applications that may support surgical audit are commercial electronic records, web-based applications, centrally funded software applications, and robust NHS connections between community and hospital
Evidence for and phases in the morphotropic phase boundary region of : A Rietveld study
We present here the results of the room temperature dielectric constant
measurements and Rietveld analysis of the powder x-ray diffraction data on
(PMN-PT) in the composition range
to show that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB)
region contains two monoclinic phases with space groups Cm (or type) and
Pm (or type) stable in the composition ranges and
, respectively. The structure of PMN-PT in the
composition ranges 0.26, and is found to be
rhombohedral (R3m) and tetragonal (P4mm), respectively. These results are
compared with the predictions of Vanderbilt & Cohen's theory.Comment: 20 pages, 11 pdf figure
11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type I inhibition in solid tumours
Glucocorticoids, key hormonal regulators of the stress response, powerfully influence
inflammation and metabolism. Reducing excessive glucocorticoid exposure is
beneficial in treating metabolic and cognitive disorders, but manipulating systemic
endogenous glucocorticoids risks compromising their beneficial effects. The enzyme
11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) activates glucocorticoids in
target tissues and thus inhibition of this enzyme presents a clinical opportunity to
reduce tissue-specific glucocorticoid action. Active glucocorticoids also exert potent
angiostatic effects by binding the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), and 11β-HSD1
inhibitors have proven beneficial in models of myocardial infarction by promoting
angiogenesis. The possibility that 11β-HSD1 inhibitors may increase pathological
angiogenesis, such as that seen in solid tumours, remains unaddressed. This project
tested the hypothesis that 11β-HSD1 inhibition promotes tumour growth as a result of
increased angiogenesis, using murine models of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and
pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).
Murine SCC or PDAC cells were injected (1x106 cells/flank) into WT female mice fed
either standard diet, or diet containing the 11β-HSD1 inhibitor UE2316 (175 mg/kg,
N=6/group), or into 11β-HSD1 knockout (Del1) mice fed standard diet. Developing
tumours were measured by callipers over several weeks, before animals were culled
and tissues collected. SCC tumours grew more rapidly in UE2316-treated mice to
reach a significantly (P<0.01) larger final volume (0.158 ± 0.037 cm3) than in control
mice (0.051 ± 0.007 cm3). PDA tumours were unaffected by 11β-HSD1 inhibition or
deletion. Immunofluorescent co-staining of tumour sections for CD31/α-smooth
muscle actin revealed no differences in vessel density, and RT-qPCR showed no
difference in angiogenic factor expression, after 11β-HSD1 inhibition/deletion in
either tumour type. GR and 11β-HSD1 RNA expression were greater in SCC vs PDAC
tumours (P<0.001), as was 11β-HSD1 activity (P<0.0001).
In studies using the aortic ring assay of ex vivo angiogenesis, 11β-HSD1 deletion, but
not inhibition with UE2316, was shown to prevent glucocorticoid-mediated
angiostasis. The growth/viability of tumour cell lines was not affected by UE2316 or
corticosterone, as assessed by live cell imaging using the Incucyte imaging system.
RNA-sequencing of SCC tumours revealed that multiple factors involved in the innate
immune/inflammatory response were reduced in UE2316-treated tumours, and that
extracellular matrix regulation was also altered by UE2316. Imaging of tumour
sections using Second Harmonic Generation microscopy confirmed that UE2316
altered Type I collagen deposition in SCC (P<0.001) but not PDAC.
11β-HSD1 inhibition can increase tumour growth, possibly via suppression of
inflammatory/immune cell signalling and alteration of the extracellular matrix, and
tumours with higher GR and 11β-HSD1 content, such as SCC, may be more at risk.
Interestingly this investigation found no evidence of increased angiogenesis in vivo or
ex vivo after UE2316 treatment, suggesting that 11β-HSD1 inhibition does not
promote angiogenesis in all ischaemic environments. Future work must focus on the
effects of 11β-HSD1 inhibition on the immune and extracellular matrix component of
the tumour microenvironment. While promotion of pathological angiogenesis does not
appear to pose a major threat, 11β-HSD1 inhibitors may still interact with the immune
and inflammatory environment in tumours to the detriment of health
High pressure phases in highly piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3
Two novel room-temperature phase transitions are observed, via synchrotron
x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, in the Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 alloy under
hydrostatic pressures up to 16 GPa. A monoclinic (M)-to-rhombohedral (R1) phase
transition takes place around 2-3 GPa, while this R1 phase transforms into
another rhombohedral phase, R2, at about 6-7 GPa. First-principles calculations
assign the R3m and R3c symmetry to R1 and R2, respectively, and reveal that R2
acts as a pressure-induced structural bridge between the polar R3m and a
predicted antiferrodistortive R-3c phase.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages with 3 figures embedded. Figs 1 and 3 in colo
Characterization of Ordering in A-Site Deficient Perovskite Ca1-xLa2x/3TiO3 Using STEM/EELS
The vacancy ordering behavior of an A-site deficient perovskite system, Ca1-xLa2x/3TiO3, was studied using atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in conjunction with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), with the aim of determining the role of A-site composition changes. At low La content (x = 0.2), adopting Pbnm symmetry, there was no indication of long-range ordering. Domains, with clear boundaries, were observed in bright-field (BF) imaging, but were not immediately visible in the corresponding high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) image. These boundaries, with the aid of displacement maps from A-site cations in the HAADF signal, are shown to be tilt boundaries. At the La-rich end of the composition (x = 0.9), adopting Cmmm symmetry, long-range ordering of vacancies and La3+ ions was observed, with alternating La-rich and La-poor layers on (001)p planes, creating a double perovskite lattice along the c axis. These highly ordered domains can be found isolated within a random distribution of vacancies/La3+, or within a large population, encompassing a large volume. In regions with a high number density of double perovskite domains, these highly ordered domains were separated by twin boundaries, with 90° or 180° lattice rotations across boundaries. The occurrence and characteristics of these ordered structures are discussed and compared with similar perovskite systems
