    Review on metallic and plastic flexible dye sensitized solar cell

    Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a promising alternative for the development of a new generation of photovoltaic devices. DSSCs have promoted intense research due to their low cost and eco-friendly advantage over conventional silicon-based crystalline solar cells. In recent years, lightweight flexible types of DSSCs have attracted much intention because of drastic reduction in production cost and more extensive application. The substrate that used as electrode of the DSSCs has a dominant impact on the methods and materials that can be applied to the cell and consequently on the resulting performance of DSSCs. Furthermore, the substrates influence significantly the stability of the device. Although the power conversion efficiency still low compared to traditional glass based DSSCs, flexible DSSCs still have potential to be the most efficient and easily implemented technology

    Prevalence and determinants of peripheral neuropathy among diabetics in a rural cum costal area of Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu

    Background: Diabetes mellitus is characterised by persistent hyperglycaemia that may be due to absolute or relative insulin deficiency. It was estimated that there would be 285 million diabetics by 2010 in the world. This estimate is projected to increase by 65% to become 438 million in the year 2030. Similarly in India it is estimated to increase by 58% from 51 million people in the year 2010 to 87 million people by the year 2030.  Methods: The study was carried out as cross sectional study among 235 diabetic OPD attendants of rural health centre aged 30 years and above. TCSS was used for diagnosis diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Data was entered in MS excel 2007 and analysis was done using SPSS version 17.0. Chi square test was applied to find statistical difference in proportions and a p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.  Results: The overall prevalence of peripheral neuropathy among the study participants was observed to be 13.2%, while none of the study subjects presented with severe form of the disease. Nearly half of the patient who participated in the study also had co existing systemic hypertension. Also 12.3% of the study subjects had a positive history of foot ulcers.Conclusions: The prevalence of DPN increased with increasing age and it is observed to be associated with duration of diabetes, physical activity, smoking habit and systemic hypertension.

    Comparative studies on the alcohol types presence in Gracilaria sp. and rice fermentation using Sasad

    Alternative fuel sources such as biofuels are needed in order to overcome environmental problem caused by fossil fuel consumption. Currently, most biofuel are produced from land based crops and there is a possibility that marine biomass such as macroalgae can be an alternative source for biofuel production. The carbohydrate in macroalgae can be broken down into simple sugar through thermo-chemical hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis. Dilute-acid hydrolysis was believed to be the most available and affordable method. However, the process may release inhibitors which would affect alcohol yield from fermentation. Thus, this work was aimed at investigating if it is possible to avoid this critical pre-treatment step in macroalgae fermentation process by using Sasad, a local Sabahan fermentation agent and to compare the yield with rice wine fermentation. This work hoped to determine and compare the alcohol content from Gracilaria sp. and rice fermentation with Sasad. Rice fermentation was found containing ethanol and 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol. Fermentation of Gracilaria sp. had shown the positive presence of 3 - methyl - 1 - butanol. It was found that Sasad can be used as a fermentation agent for bioalcohol production from Gracilaria sp. without the need for a pretreatment step. However further investigations are needed to determine if pre-treatment would increase the yield of alcohol

    Expression and function of αβ1 integrins in pancretic beta (INS-1) cells

    Integrin-extracellular matrix interactions are important determinants of beta cell behaviours. The β1 integrin is a well-known regulator of beta cell activities; however, little is known of its associated α subunits. In the present study, αβ1 integrin expression was examined in the rat insulinoma cell line (INS-1) to identify their role in beta cell survival and function. Seven α subunits associated with β1 integrin were identified, including α1-6 and αV. Among these heterodimers, α3β1 was most highly expressed. Common ligands for the α3β1 integrin, including fibronectin, laminin, collagen I and collagen IV were tested to identify the most suitable matrix for INS-1 cell proliferation and function. Cells exposed to collagen I and IV demonstrated significant increases in adhesion, spreading, cell viability, proliferation, and FAK phosphorylation when compared to cells cultured on fibronectin, laminin and controls. Integrin-dependent attachment also had a beneficial effect on beta cell function, increasing Pdx-1 and insulin gene and protein expression on collagens I and IV, in parallel with increased basal insulin release and enhanced insulin secretion upon high glucose challenge. Furthermore, functional blockade of α3β1 integrin decreased cell adhesion, spreading and viability on both collagens and reduced Pdx-1 and insulin expression, indicating that its interactions with collagen matrices are important for beta cell survival and function. These results demonstrate that specific αβ1 integrin-ECM interactions are critical regulators of INS-1 beta cell survival and function and will be important in designing optimal conditions for cell-based therapies for diabetes treatment

    Generational distribution of a Candida glabrata population: Resilient old cells prevail, while younger cells dominate in the vulnerable host.

    Similar to other yeasts, the human pathogen Candida glabrata ages when it undergoes asymmetric, finite cell divisions, which determines its replicative lifespan. We sought to investigate if and how aging changes resilience of C. glabrata populations in the host environment. Our data demonstrate that old C. glabrata are more resistant to hydrogen peroxide and neutrophil killing, whereas young cells adhere better to epithelial cell layers. Consequently, virulence of old compared to younger C. glabrata cells is enhanced in the Galleria mellonella infection model. Electron microscopy images of old C. glabrata cells indicate a marked increase in cell wall thickness. Comparison of transcriptomes of old and young C. glabrata cells reveals differential regulation of ergosterol and Hog pathway associated genes as well as adhesion proteins, and suggests that aging is accompanied by remodeling of the fungal cell wall. Biochemical analysis supports this conclusion as older cells exhibit a qualitatively different lipid composition, leading to the observed increased emergence of fluconazole resistance when grown in the presence of fluconazole selection pressure. Older C. glabrata cells accumulate during murine and human infection, which is statistically unlikely without very strong selection. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that neutrophils constitute the predominant selection pressure in vivo. When we altered experimentally the selection pressure by antibody-mediated removal of neutrophils, we observed a significantly younger pathogen population in mice. Mathematical modeling confirmed that differential selection of older cells is sufficient to cause the observed demographic shift in the fungal population. Hence our data support the concept that pathogenesis is affected by the generational age distribution of the infecting C. glabrata population in a host. We conclude that replicative aging constitutes an emerging trait, which is selected by the host and may even play an unanticipated role in the transition from a commensal to a pathogen state.post-print10768 K

    A aprendizagem teórico-vivencial: exploração de alguns limites e possibilidades

    Esse estudo foi delineado com o objetivo de comparar a disponibilidade inicial de um grupo de alunos para uma proposta de aprendizagem teórico-vivencial com mudanças auto-observadas no final do processo. O grupo foi constituído por 12 alunos inscritos na disciplina "Dinâmica do Relacionamento Humano", oferecida em um Programa de Pós-Graduação para profissionais da Área de Saúde Mental. Os dados foram obtidos através de respostas dos participantes a questões abertas feitas no início e no final do processo do grupo, e foram tratadas pelo procedimento de análise categorial de conteúdo. Os resultados evidenciaram que a falta de disponibilidade inicial para a tarefa grupai não se constituiu em fator impeditivo de mudanças positivas posteriores, enquanto que a disponibilidade associada a necessidades pessoais de interação, constituiu-se em limite para o alcance desse tipo de proposta
