Reliability of several subject didactic assessment instruments. The use of assessment instruments may help teachers monitor their own subject didactic effort in an effort to attain certain goals. In the light of the critical importance which subjects in the natural sciences (e.g. mathematics and physical science) have assumed in South Africa, research on assessment instruments has become of critical importance. However, the effectiveness of these measuring instruments has to be established beforehand. The aim here was to compare the SOM, LEMOSS(II) and LCH questionnaires in terms of reliability. The ultimate aim of the analysis is the use of these questionnaires to optimise learning competences, especially in mathematics, physical science and home economics. It was found that the three questionnaires discussed can be used with an acceptable degree of confidence for the measurement and optimisation of the subject-related learning competences of Grade 9 learners in the Tzaneen and Phalaborwa areas. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between sufficient of the problem-solving strategies and better achievement in the subjects discussed. Progression of cardiovascular risk factors in black Africans: 3 year follow up of the SABPA cohort study

    Get PDF
Recent work identified a high prevalence of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) among urban black South Africans. The aim was to track the progression of CVD risk factors in a multi-ethnic sample of South Africans. Participants were 173 black (aged 47.5 ± 7.8 yrs) and 186 white teachers (aged 49.6 ± 9.9 yrs) that were examined at baseline and 3 years follow-up. Blacks demonstrated a substantially higher prevalence of composite CVD burden (defined as history of physician diagnosed heart disease, use of anti-hypertensives, anti-diabetic, or statin medications at either time point) compared to whites (49.1 vs. 32.0%, p= 0.012) respectively. After controlling for baseline, the black participants demonstrated greater increases in 24 hr systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, fasting glucose, fibrinogen, D-dimer, and waist circumference in comparison with whites. In summary, an adverse progression of CVD risk factors was observed in the whole sample, although to a larger degree in black participants. Aggressive treatment strategies for controlling risk factors in black Africans are needed to reduce the increasing burden of CVD in South Africa

Part of: Seliger, Günther (Ed.): Innovative solutions : proceedings / 11th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing, Berlin, Germany, 23rd - 25th September, 2013. - Berlin: Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin, 2013. - ISBN 978-3-7983-2609-5 (online). - http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:83-opus4-40276. - pp. 171–176.Sri Lanka promotes manufacturing sector without much concern on environmental and social problems as one of the driving forces for the economic prosperity. This has aggravated number of issues and this has lead to adapting of some sustainability related initiatives in local manufacturing sector. However, majority of them function independently with fix boundaries. Conversely, there are some hindrances to implement the sustainable manufacturing concepts as a one comprehensive solution. This research intends to investigate the motivators and barriers to adapt sustainable manufacturing concept to overcome current issues faced by the manufacturing industry. An evaluation criterion was developed based on some of the popularly used guidelines and sustainability options available in number of sub domains. Results highlights the main motivators plus common and cluster specific barriers to implement sustainable manufacturing in local industry. These outcomes can be easily considered for the policy development purposes in developing countries in future

The purpose of this fact sheet is to explore the benefits of cooking with children and provide some helpful tips to get started

A momentum-conserving, consistent, Volume-of-Fluid method for incompressible flow on staggered grids

    Get PDF
The computation of flows with large density contrasts is notoriously difficult. To alleviate the difficulty we consider a consistent mass and momentum-conserving discretization of the Navier-Stokes equation. Incompressible flow with capillary forces is modelled and the discretization is performed on a staggered grid of Marker and Cell type. The Volume-of-Fluid method is used to track the interface and a Height-Function method is used to compute surface tension. The advection of the volume fraction is performed using either the Lagrangian-Explicit / CIAM (Calcul d'Interface Affine par Morceaux) method or the Weymouth and Yue (WY) Eulerian-Implicit method. The WY method conserves fluid mass to machine accuracy provided incompressiblity is satisfied which leads to a method that is both momentum and mass-conserving. To improve the stability of these methods momentum fluxes are advected in a manner "consistent" with the volume-fraction fluxes, that is a discontinuity of the momentum is advected at the same speed as a discontinuity of the density. To find the density on the staggered cells on which the velocity is centered, an auxiliary reconstruction of the density is performed. The method is tested for a droplet without surface tension in uniform flow, for a droplet suddenly accelerated in a carrying gas at rest at very large density ratio without viscosity or surface tension, for the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, for a falling raindrop and for an atomizing flow in air-water conditions

Alterations in the blood sugar and ketone levels caused by dosing acetate, propionate and butyrate into the rumen of the sheep

    Get PDF
Solutions of acetate, propionate and butyrate, alone and in combinations, were dosed into the rumen of sheep and the effects on blood sugar and ketones determined. Acetate was found to cause a slight and delayed rise in ketone bodies without affecting the blood sugar. Propionate caused a marked rise in blood sugar and bad a strong antiketogenic effect when given with butyrate. Butyrate produced a sharp rise in ketones, mainly beta-hydroxybutyric acid, together with a fall in blood sugar. The latter effect, however, was not constant. The intravenous injection of beta-hydroxybutyric acid appeared to reduce the blood sugar level. Aceto-acetic acid injected intravenously was partially converted to betahydroxybutyric acid. These results are discussed in relation to the more recent literature. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 300dpi. Association between Nutritional Awareness and Diet Quality: Evidence from the Observation of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Luxembourg (ORISCAV-LUX) Study

This study examined the association between nutritional awareness and diet quality, as indicated by energy density, dietary diversity and adequacy to achieve dietary recommendations, while considering the potentially important role of socioeconomic status (SES). Data were derived from 1351 subjects, aged 18–69 years and enrolled in the ORISCAV-LUX study. Energy density score (EDS), dietary diversity score (DDS) and Recommendation Compliance Index (RCI) were calculated based on data derived from a food frequency questionnaire. Nutritional awareness was defined as self-perception of the importance assigned to eating balanced meals, and classified as high, moderate, or of little importance. Initially, a General Linear Model was fit that adjusted for age, sex, country of birth, and body mass index (BMI). Furthermore, simultaneous contributions to diet quality of individual-level socioeconomic factors, education, and household income were examined across levels of nutritional awareness. Attributing high importance was associated inversely with energy density (p = 0.02), positively with both dietary diversity (p \u3c 0.0001), and adequacy to dietary recommendations (p \u3c 0.0001), independent of demographic factors, weight status and SES. Further adjustment for household income in the EDS-related multivariable model, reduced the β coefficient by 47% for the “moderate importance” category and 36% for the “high importance” category. Likewise, the β coefficient decreased by 13.6% and 10.7% in the DDS-related model, and by 12.5%, and 7.1% in the RCI-related model, respectively, across awareness categories. Nutritional awareness has a direct effect on diet quality, with a minor component of variance explained by improved income. The impact of nutritional awareness on diet quality seems to be a promising area for both health promotion and health policy research
