    SIMULATION OF A FLOW THROUGH A RIGID POROUS MEDIUM SUBJECTED TO A CONSTRAINT

    This work uses a previuosly proposed mathematical model to study the filling up of an unsaturated rigid porous medium by a liquid identifying the transition from unsaturated to saturated flow. This model accounts for the physical upper bound of the fluid fraction that depends on the volume of the pores and employs a mixture theory to describe the flow. The mathematical description of the phenomenon leads to a nonlinear hyperbolic system. In order to solve this system, the space of admissible solutions must be enlarged to admit discontinuous solutions that may be shock waves. The complete solution of a Riemann problem associated to the system of conservation laws satisfying the constraint given by the saturation upper bound is presented. Some meaningful results are presented and discussed

    A hierarchical model for the cash transfer system design problem

    This paper presents a hierarchical model that incorporates strategic, tactical, and operational decisions of cash transfer management system of a bank. The aim of the model is to decide on the location of cash management centers, the number and routes of vehicles, and the cash inventory management policies to minimize the cost of owning and operating a cash transfer system while maintaining a pre-defined service level. Owing to the difficulty of finding optimal decisions in such integrated models, an iterative solution approach is proposed in which strategic, tactical, and operational problems are solved separately via a feedback mechanism. Numerical results show that such an approach is quite effective in reaching at greatly improved solutions with just a few iterations, making it a very promising approach for similar models

    Os M. pretenderam traçar um quadro da História da Alimentação, não como um novo ramo epistemológico da disciplina, mas como um campo em desenvolvimento de práticas e atividades especializadas, incluindo pesquisa, formação, publicações, associações, encontros acadêmicos, etc. Um breve relato das condições em que tal campo se assentou faz-se preceder de um panorama dos estudos de alimentação e temas correia tos, em geral, segundo cinco abardagens Ia biológica, a econômica, a social, a cultural e a filosófica!, assim como da identificação das contribuições mais relevantes da Antropologia, Arqueologia, Sociologia e Geografia. A fim de comentar a multiforme e volumosa bibliografia histórica, foi ela organizada segundo critérios morfológicos. A seguir, alguns tópicos importantes mereceram tratamento à parte: a fome, o alimento e o domínio religioso, as descobertas européias e a difusão mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia.     This work studies the flow of a mixture of two fluids – a Newtonian fluid and a pollutant – through a rigid cylindrical shell porous matrix. Aiming to build a preliminary local model for the flow of a Newtonian fluid containing a pollutant through a wellbore, a mixture theory approach is employed. The mixture consists of four overlapping continuous constituents: one solid (porous medium), one liquid (Newtonian fluid), the pollutant (solid, liquid or gas) and an inert gas included to account for the compressibility of the mixture as a whole. Assuming the flow on radial direction only, a set of three nonlinear partial differential equations describes the problem. Combining Glimm’s scheme with an operator splitting technique to account for the non-homogeneous part of the hyperbolic operator, the resulting nonlinear hyperbolic system is numerically approximated.
