NMR Knight shifts and linewidths in the Niā€Pdā€P and Niā€Ptā€P metallic glasses: Composition and temperature dependences

    Get PDF
NMR Knight shift and linewidth measurements are reported for the ^(31)P nuclei in the metallic glasses (Ni_(0.50)Pd_(0.50))100āˆ’_xP_x (where x=16 to 26.5) and (Ni_yPd_(1āˆ’y))_(80)P_(20) (where y=0.20 to 0.80), and both the ^(31)P and 195Pt nuclei in the metallic glass (Ni_yPt_(1āˆ’y))_(75)P_(25) (where y=0.20 to 0.68). The results are discussed in terms of the amorphous structure, electronic structure, and stability of transition metal + metalloid metallic glasses

Neuron splitting in compute-bound parallel network simulations enables runtime scaling with twice as many processors

    Get PDF
Neuron tree topology equations can be split into two subtrees and solved on different processors with no change in accuracy, stability, or computational effort; communication costs involve only sending and receiving two double precision values by each subtree at each time step. Splitting cells is useful in attaining load balance in neural network simulations, especially when there is a wide range of cell sizes and the number of cells is about the same as the number of processors. For compute-bound simulations load balance results in almost ideal runtime scaling. Application of the cell splitting method to two published network models exhibits good runtime scaling on twice as many processors as could be effectively used with whole-cell balancing

An inflight refill unit for replenishing research animal drinking water

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design process and development approach for a method of maintaining sufficient quantities of water for research animals during a Shuttle mission of long duration. An inflight refill unit (IRU) consisting of two major subsystems, a fluid pumping unit (FPU) and a collapsible water reservoir (CWR), were developed. The FPU provides the system measurement and controls, pump, water lines, and plumbing necessary to collect water coming into the unit from the potable water system and pump it out into the RAHF drinking water tanks. The CWR is a Kevlar (TM) reinforced storage bladder connected to the FPU, which has a capacity of 6 liters in its expanded volume and functions to store the water collected from the potable water system, allowing for transport of the water back to the Spacelab where it is pumped into each of two research animal holding facilities. Additional components of the IRU system include the inlet and outlet fluid hoses, a power cable for providing 29V direct current spacecraft electrical power to the pump within the FPU, a tether system for the unit when in use in Spacelab, and an adapter for mating the unit to the orbiter waste collection system in order to dump excess water after use in Spacelab

Characterization of Melt Infiltrated SiC/SiC Composite Combustor Liners Using Meso- and Micro-NDE Techniques

    Get PDF
Melt-infiltrated ceramic matrix composite SiC/SiC material systems are under development for use in combustor liners for low-emission advanced gas turbines. Uncertainty in repeatability of processing methods for these large components (33--76 cm diameter), and hence possible reduced reliability for the end user. This requires that appropriate test methods, at both meso- and micro-scale, be used to ensure that the liners are acceptable for use. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods, if demonstrated to reliably detect changes caused by processing, would be of significant benefit to both manufacturer and end user. This paper describes the NDE methods and their applications in detecting a process upset in a melt-infiltrated 33 cm combustor liner and how high-resolution scanning electron microscopy was used to verify the NDE data

Effects of ultra pig krave extraĀ® on starter pig performance

    Get PDF
A growth study and a preference study were conducted to evaluate the effect of a commercially available flavoring agent on starter pig performance. A total of 192, 3-wk old, weaned pigs were utilized. A 2-phase starter program was used in the growth study. Half the pigs received creep feed with added flavor and half without, beginning at 10 days of age. Pigs receiving flavored feed at 10 days of age had significantly better gains and feed intake the first 2 wk postweaning than pigs on nonflavored feed. The pigs in the preference study demonstrated a clear preference for flavored vs nonflavored feed. These results indicate addition of flavor to a creep diet beginning at 10 days of age will increase feed intake and gains in the nursery. However, when a creep feed is fed, addition of flavor to a nursery diet did not result in improved performance.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 17, 198

A comparison of optical and radar measurements of mesospheric winds and tides

    Get PDF
Optical measurements of mesospheric winds by Fabryā€Perot spectrometers, FPSs, at Mawson, 67.6Ā°S 62.9Ā°E, and Davis, 68.6Ā°S 78.0Ā°E, Antarctica are compared with similar measurements obtained using a spacedā€antenna MF radar at Davis. The FPSs observed the OH emission. Different analysis procedures, used to determine the mean wind, and amplitude and phase of the semidiurnal tide, have been compared. At these latitudes the diurnal tide is weak and the semiā€diurnal tide, although highly variable in amplitude, is usually the dominant periodicity. When comparing the amplitude and phase of the semidiurnal tide good agreement is obtained between measurements by the two instruments

Assessing Preemptive Argumentation in Studentsā€™ Persuasive Speech Outlines

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study was to determine if critical thinking skills, a key component of basic communication course pedagogy, can be assessed through studentsā€™ use of preemptive argumentation. Persuasive speech outlines were coded to determine if preemptive argumentation was present in studentsā€™ speeches and to determine the quality of preemptive argumentation. The results indicated that the majority of outlines contained preemptive argumentation. However, of those speeches containing preemptive argumentation, the majority of outlines employed low-quality preemptive argumentation. Finally, the findings revealed that the quality of preemptive argumentation employed in the persuasive speech outlines did not predict the studentsā€™ persuasive speech grades. Implications for instructor training programs and pedagogy in the basic course are discussed

Comparison of Methods for Purification of DNA From Rice

    Get PDF
Three techniques were employed to purify genomic DNA from deomstic rice (Oryza sativa L). Following extraction, the DNA was electrophoresed through agarose to determine its integrity. We determined that spooling yielded better quality, through lower quantity DNA than either of the other two techniques
