    An experiment using the Eurogam Phase II gamma-ray spectrometer confirms the existence of an excited superdeformed (SD) band in 190Hg and its very unusual decay into the lowest SD band over 3-4 transitions. The energies and dipole character of the transitions linking the two SD bands have been firmly established.     Observation of Positive-Parity Bands in 109^{109}Pd and 111^{111}Pd: Enhanced γ\gamma-Softness

    The neutron-rich nuclei 109^{109}Pd and 111^{111}Pd were produced as fission fragments following the 30^{30}Si + 168^{168}Er reaction at 142 MeV. Using the identification based on the coincidences with the complementary fission fragments, the only positive-parity bands observed so far in 109^{109}Pd and 111^{111}Pd emerged from this work. A band, built on top of the 5/2+^+ ground state exhibiting ΔI\Delta I = 1 energy-level staggering, was observed in each of these nuclei. Both nuclei of interest, 109^{109}Pd and 111^{111}Pd, are suggested to lie in the transitional region of Pd isotopes of maximum γ\gamma-softness. The ground states of both nuclei are predicted by TRS calculations to be extremely γ\gamma-soft with shallow triaxial minima. The first crossing in the new bands is proposed to be due to an alignment of h11/22h^2_{11/2} neutrons

    Confirmation of a new resonance in 26Si and contribution of classical novae to the galactic abundance of 26Al

However, uncertainties in the properties of key resonant states in 26Si have hindered our ability to accurately model the influence of this reaction in such environments. We report on a detailed γ -ray spectroscopy study of 26Si and present evidence for the existence of a new, likely ℓ =1 , resonance in the 25Al + p system at Er=153.9 (15 ) keV. This state is now expected to provide the dominant contribution to the 25Al(p ,γ ) stellar reaction rate over the temperature range, T ≈0.1 −0.2 GK. Despite a significant increase in the rate at low temperatures, we find that the final ejected abundance of 26Al from classical novae remains largely unaffected even if the reaction rate is artificially increased by a factor of 10. Based on new, galactic chemical evolution calculations, we estimate that the maximum contribution of novae to the observed galactic abundance of 26Al is ≈0.2 M⊙ .     Facial Cosmetics and Attractiveness: Comparing the Effect Sizes of Professionally-Applied Cosmetics and Identity

    Forms of body decoration exist in all human cultures. However, in Western societies, women are more likely to engage in appearance modification, especially through the use of facial cosmetics. How effective are cosmetics at altering attractiveness? Previous research has hinted that the effect is not large, especially when compared to the variation in attractiveness observed between individuals due to differences in identity. In order to build a fuller understanding of how cosmetics and identity affect attractiveness, here we examine how professionally-applied cosmetics alter attractiveness and compare this effect with the variation in attractiveness observed between individuals. In Study 1, 33 YouTube models were rated for attractiveness before and after the application of professionally-applied cosmetics. Cosmetics explained a larger proportion of the variation in attractiveness compared with previous studies, but this effect remained smaller than variation caused by differences in attractiveness between individuals. Study 2 replicated the results of the first study with a sample of 45 supermodels, with the aim of examining the effect of cosmetics in a sample of faces with low variation in attractiveness between individuals. While the effect size of cosmetics was generally large, between-person variability due to identity remained larger. Both studies also found interactions between cosmetics and identity-more attractive models received smaller increases when cosmetics were worn. Overall, we show that professionally- applied cosmetics produce a larger effect than self-applied cosmetics, an important theoretical consideration for the field. However, the effect of individual differences in facial appearance is ultimately more important in perceptions of attractiveness

    High-spin states in (120)Te were populated in the reaction (80)Se((48)Ca, alpha 4n)(120)Te at a beam energy of 207 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The previously known level scheme is extended to higher spin and new interband transitions and side-feeding branches are established. Five highly deformed rotational bands, extending up to almost I = 50, are observed for the first time. The bands are compared with similar structures found recently in neighboring nuclei. The experimental results are interpreted within the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. Configuration assignments to several terminating states and to the high-spin bands are discussed

    Coloration in different areas of facial skin is a cue to health: The role of cheek redness and periorbital luminance in health perception

    Looking healthy is a desirable trait, and facial skin color is a predictor of perceived health. However, skin conditions that cause dissatisfaction with appearance are specific to particular facial areas. We investigated whether color variation in facial skin is related to perceived health. Study 1 defined three areas based on color differences between faces perceived as healthy or unhealthy: the forehead, periorbital areas, and the cheeks. Periorbital luminance and cheek redness predicted perceived health, as did global skin yellowness. In Study 2, increased luminance and redness caused faces to be perceived as healthier, but only when the increase was in the periorbital and cheek areas, respectively. Manipulating each area separately in Study 3 revealed cheek redness and periorbital luminance equally increased perceived health, with low periorbital luminance more negatively affecting perceptions. These findings show that color variation in facial skin is a cue for health perception in female faces

    Study of 124^{124}Sn+136^{136}Xe fusion-evaporation: analysis of a rare-event experiment

    7 pages, 4 figuresFusion-evaporation in the 124^{124}Sn+136^{136}Xe system is studied using a high intensity xenon beam provided by the Ganil accelerator and the LISE3 wien filter for the selection of the products. Due to the mass symmetry of the entrance system, the rejection of the beam by the spectrometer was of the order of 5times1085times10^8. We have thus performed a detailed statistical analysis to estimate random events and to infer the fusion-evaporation cross sections. No signicant decay events were detected and upper limit cross sections of 172~pb, 87~pb and 235~pb were deduced for the synthesis of 257^{257}Rf, 258^{258}Rf and 259^{259}Rf, respectively
