Plastid genome sequencing reveals biogeographical structure and extensive population genetic variation in wild populations of Phalaris arundinacea L. in northâwestern Europe
peer-reviewedNew and comprehensive collections of the perennial rhizomatous reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) were made in NW Europe along northâtoâsouth and eastâtoâwest clines from Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Rhizome, seed and leaf samples were taken for analysis and genetic resource conservation. A subsample covering the geographical range was characterized using plastid genome sequencing and SNP discovery generated using a longâread PCR and MiSeq sequencing approach. Samples were also subject to flow cytometry and all found to be tetraploid. New sequences were assembled against a Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass) reference genome, and an average of approximately 60% of each genome was aligned (81 064 bp). Genetic variation was high among the 48 sequenced genotypes with a total of 1793 SNPs, equating to 23 SNPs per kbp. SNPs were subject to principal coordinate and Structure analyses to detect population genetic groupings and to examine phylogeographical pattern. Results indicate substantial genetic variation and population genetic structuring of this allogamous species at a broad geographical scale in NW Europe with plastid genetic diversity organized more across an eastâtoâwest than a northâtoâsouth cline

Spiritual experiences of continuity and discontinuity among parents who lose a child
This is a study of parents' spiritual experience of the loss of a child. Many parents experience continuing bonds with their deceased child as well as forms of posttraumatic growth. Twelve parents of children dying after severe illness were interviewed about their experiences. The interviews contain stories about premonitions, the intensity of the moment of the child's death and the child's presence after death. Thematically the stories reflect the dialectics of continuity and discontinuity in the relationship with the child. Bereavement and the role of religious and cultural factors.
yesThe aim of this article is to give an overview of some of the key dimensions of variation in cultural and religious rituals during the immediate period after a death and in the longer term, in order to inform service delivery in multi-cultural societies. For each area we give examples of different customs, and consider their functions and possible impact. Dimensions considered in the immediate period after bereavement are: The time and space given to formal rituals, expression of feelings, assertion of status and disposal of the body. In the longer term, we look at variations in remembering the deceased and in continuing bonds. Throughout we consider the interplay between individual responses and the personÂżs cultural and religious context. Our objective is to provide an accessible introduction for practitioners new to working with bereavement and provide a succinct reference point for more experienced bereavement workers.Full text made available 1st May 2014 at the end of the publisher's embargo period
Biogeochemical modelling of dissolved oxygen in a changing ocean
Secular decreases in dissolved oxygen concentration have been observed within the tropical oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) and at mid- to high latitudes over the last approximately 50 years. Earth system model projections indicate that a reduction in the oxygen inventory of the global ocean, termed ocean deoxygenation, is a likely consequence of on-going anthropogenic warming. Current models are, however, unable to consistently reproduce the observed trends and variability of recent decades, particularly within the established tropical OMZs. Here, we conduct a series of targeted hindcast model simulations using a state-of-the-art global ocean biogeochemistry model in order to explore and review biases in model distributions of oceanic oxygen. We show that the largest magnitude of uncertainty is entrained into ocean oxygen response patterns due to model parametrization of pCO2-sensitive Câ:âN ratios in carbon fixation and imposed atmospheric forcing data. Inclusion of a pCO2-sensitive Câ:âN ratio drives historical oxygen depletion within the ocean interior due to increased organic carbon export and subsequent remineralization. Atmospheric forcing is shown to influence simulated interannual variability in ocean oxygen, particularly due to differences in imposed variability of wind stress and heat fluxes
Thermoelectric Response of an Interacting Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in Quantizing Magnetic Field
We present a discussion of the linear thermoelectric response of an
interacting electron gas in a quantizing magnetic field. Boundary currents can
carry a significant fraction of the net current passing through the system. We
derive general expressions for the bulk and boundary components of the number
and energy currents. We show that the local current density may be described in
terms of ``transport'' and ``internal magnetization'' contributions. The latter
carry no net current and are not observable in standard transport experiments.
We show that although Onsager relations cannot be applied to the local current,
they are valid for the transport currents and hence for the currents observed
in standard transport experiments. We relate three of the four thermoelectric
response coefficients of a disorder-free interacting two-dimensional electron
gas to equilibrium thermodynamic quantities. In particular, we show that the
diffusion thermopower is proportional to the entropy per particle, and we
