    The vegetation of the habitat of the Brenton blue butterfly, Orachrysops niobe (Trimen), in the Western Cape, South Africa

    The Brenton blue butterfly is known only from a small population in one hectare of asteraceous coastal fynbos at Brenton-on-Sea. This fynbos is characterized by a great diversity of shrubs, herbs and graminoids, with a successional gradient to thicket where Pterocelastrus tricuspidatus is dominant. The eggs of the butterfly are laid on the lower side of the leaves of Indigofera erecta, on which the larvae feed. Fifteen 1-m² quadrats containing plants of Indigofera erecta with and without eggs of the butterfly were distinguished and sampled separately from 15 1-m² quadrats containing plants of Indigofera erecta without eggs. No marked differences in total vegetation, shrub or herb cover between the sites with and without eggs were observed. There was a difference in abundance of the fern Pteridium aquilinum, with over 30% cover at sites with no eggs and only about 6% at sites with eggs present. This could reflect the absence of other plants where the ferns had such dense cover

    Implementation of the participatory approach for supervisors to prevent sick leave: a process evaluation

    To perform a process evaluation of a multifaceted strategy to implement the participatory approach for supervisors to prevent sick leave in three organisations. The implementation strategy incorporated a working group meeting with stakeholder representatives, supervisor training, and optional supervisor coaching. Context, recruitment, reach, dose delivered, dose received, fidelity, and satisfaction with the strategy were assessed at organisational and supervisor level using questionnaires and registration forms. At least 4 out of 6 stakeholders were represented in the working group meetings, and 11 % (n = 116) of supervisors could be reached. The working group meetings and supervisor training were delivered and received as planned and were well appreciated within all three organisations. Three supervisors made use of coaching. At 6-month follow-up, 11 out of 41 supervisors (27 %) indicated that they had applied the participatory approach at least one time. The implementation strategy was largely carried out as intended. However, reach of both supervisors and department managers should be improved. Future studies should consider targeting employees with the strategy

    Autonomy in participation in cerebral palsy from childhood to adulthood

    Aim To determine the long-term development of autonomy in participation of individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) without intellectual disability. Method Individuals with CP (n=189, 117 males, 72 females; mean age [SD] 21y 11mo [4y 11mo], range 12-34y); were assessed cross-sectionally (46%) or up to four times (54%), between the ages of 12 and 34 years. Autonomy in participation was classified using phase 3 of the Rotterdam Transition Profile. A logistic generalized estimating equation regression model was used to analyse autonomy in six domains (independent variables: age, Gross Motor Function Classification System [GMFCS] level, and interaction between age and GMFCS level). Proportions of autonomy were compared to references using binomial tests (pIndividuals with cerebral palsy without intellectual disability achieved autonomy in most participation domains. Regarding intimate relationships, they continued to have less experience compared to age-matched references. Development of autonomy was less favourable for individuals in Gross Motor Function Classification System levels III to V.</p

    Bibliometric mapping of current therapies for children and adolescents with a functional visual disorder (FVD)

    Children and adolescents with a functional neurological disorder (such as functional visual disorder [FVD]) experience a lower psychological quality of life with more mental health problems than healthy controls. While there is ample research about functional neurological disorder in general, there is also a general lack of research concerning FVD and the effectiveness of treatments given to children and adolescents suffering from it. Our aim was to provide a visual overview of common topics concerning treatments of children and adolescents with an FVD. VOSviewer is a programme that extracts information (terms) from the titles and abstracts of articles to generate bibliometric networks. The results show that common subject terms are paediatrics and children. The common diagnostic terms include conversion disorder, hysterical vision disturbance, somatoform disorders, hysterical disorders, and functional (psychogenic) visual loss. Common therapeutic terms are suggestion therapy, brief psychotherapy, hypnosis, psychiatry, therapeutic processes, and suggestibility. The results give insight into the treatments that children and adolescents with FVD currently receive. We also provide directions for future studies into the treatment of FVD in children and adolescents

    Digital transformations and the archival nature of surrogates

    Large-scale digitization is generating extraordinary collections of visual and textual surrogates, potentially endowed with transcendent long-term cultural and research values. Understanding the nature of digital surrogacy is a substantial intellectual opportunity for archival science and the digital humanities, because of the increasing independence of surrogate collections from their archival sources. The paper presents an argument that one of the most significant requirements for the long-term access to collections of digital surrogates is to treat digital surrogates as archival records that embody traces of their fluid lifecycles and therefore are worthy of management and preservation as archives. It advances a theory of the archival nature of surrogacy founded on longstanding notions of archival quality, the traces of their source and the conditions of their creation, and the functional ‘‘work of the archive.’’ The paper presents evidence supporting a ‘‘secondary provenance’’ derived from re-digitization, re-ingestion of multiple versions, and de facto replacement of the original sources. The design of the underlying research that motivates the paper and summary findings are reported separately.     Professionals' motivation to support parental self-management regarding children with physical disability in Dutch rehabilitation services: ‘Please mind your gap’

    Background: Professionals in child healthcare increasingly endorse the support of self-management in paediatric rehabilitation services for children with physical disability. Less understood though are their views regarding the role of the children's parents, as well as their own role in supporting parents. This study aimed to investigate the motivation of rehabilitation professionals to support self-management of parents regarding their child with physical disability, professionals' beliefs about parental self-management, and the perceptions underlying their motivation. Methods: A mixed-methods strategy was followed using a survey among rehabilitation professionals (n = 175) and consecutive semi-structured interviews (n = 16). Associations between autonomous (intrinsic) versus controlled (extrinsic) motivation and beliefs on parental self-management were tested. For deeper understanding of their motivation, directed content analysis was used to address key themes in the qualitative data extracts. Results: Professionals reported autonomous motivation for parental self-management support more often than controlled motivation (t[174] = 29.95, p <.001). Autonomous motivation was associated with the beliefs about the importance of parental self-management (r =.29, p <.001). Approximately 90% of the professionals believed that parents should have an active role, though less than 10% considered it important that parents also are independent actors and initiative takers in the rehabilitation process. Interviews revealed that individual professionals struggled with striking a balance between keeping control and ‘giving away responsibility’ to parents. A ‘professional-like’ attitude was expected of parents with ‘involvement’ and ‘commitment’ as essential preconditions. Furthermore, professionals expressed the need for additional coaching skills to support parental self-management. Conclusion: Professionals were predominantly autonomously motivated to support self-management of parents. However, the dilemmas in giving or taking responsibilities within the partnership with parents may limit their effectiveness in empowering parents. Reflection on the potential gaps between professionals' motivation, beliefs and actual behaviour might be crucial to support parental self-management
