International Research Ethics Education
This paper assesses the state of research ethics in low- and middle-income countries and the achievements of the Fogarty International Center's bioethics training program since 2000. The vision of FIC for the next decade of research ethics education is encapsulated in four proposed goals: (1) Ensure sufficient expertise in ethics review by having someone with long-term training on every high-workload REC; (2) Develop LMIC capacity to conduct original research on critical ethical issues by supporting doctoral and postdoctoral training and career paths for research ethicists; (3) Make research training and review at LMIC institutions sustainable by identifying additional funding mechanisms and models; (4) Make institutional research systems more ethical and efficient through context-specific training integrated into all levels of scientific training
The optical-ultraviolet continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies
This paper aims to understand the continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies. By fitting
the single galaxies in the sample of Heckman et al. (1995) with composite
models (shock+ photoionization from the active center), we show that five main
components characterize the SED of the continuum. Shocks play an important role
since they produce a high temperature zone where soft X-rays are emitted.
We show that in the optical-UV range, the slope of the NLR emission
reproduces the observed values, and may be the main component of the
featureless continuum. The presence of star forming regions cannot be excluded
in the circumnuclear region of various Seyfert galaxies. An attempt is made to
find their fingerprints in the observed AGN spectra. Finally, it is
demonstrated that multi-cloud models are necessary to interpret the spectra of
single objects, even in the global investigation of a sample of galaxies.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX (including 5 Tables) + 17 PostScript figures. To

Mid-IR period-magnitude relations for AGB stars
Asymptotic Giant Branch variables are found to obey period-luminosity
relations in the mid-IR similar to those seen at K_S (2.14 microns), even at 24
microns where emission from circumstellar dust is expected to be dominant.
Their loci in the M, logP diagrams are essentially the same for the LMC and for
NGC6522 in spite of different ages and metallicities. There is no systematic
trend of slope with wavelength. The offsets of the apparent magnitude vs. logP
relations imply a difference between the two fields of 3.8 in distance modulus.
The colours of the variables confirm that a principal period with log P > 1.75
is a necessary condition for detectable mass-loss. At the longest observed
wavelength, 24 microns, many semi-regular variables have dust shells comparable
in luminosity to those around Miras. There is a clear bifurcation in LMC
colour-magnitude diagrams involving 24 micron magnitudes.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Moving to Extremal Graph Parameters
Which graphs, in the class of all graphs with given numbers n and m of edges
and vertices respectively, minimizes or maximizes the value of some graph
parameter? In this paper we develop a technique which provides answers for
several different parameters: the numbers of edges in the line graph, acyclic
orientations, cliques, and forests. (We minimize the first two and maximize the
third and fourth.)
Our technique involves two moves on the class of graphs. A compression move
converts any graph to a form we call fully compressed: the fully compressed
graphs are split graphs in which the neighbourhoods of points in the
independent set are nested. A second consolidation move takes each fully
compressed graph to one particular graph which we call H(n,m). We show
monotonicity of the parameters listed for these moves in many cases, which
enables us to obtain our results fairly simply.

Schwarzschild Atmospheric Processes: A Classical Path to the Quantum
We develop some classical descriptions for processes in the Schwarzschild
string atmosphere. These processes suggest relationships between macroscopic
and microscopic scales. The classical descriptions developed in this essay
highlight the fundamental quantum nature of the Schwarzschild atmospheric

A Conserved Bach Current
The Bach tensor and a vector which generates conformal symmetries allow a
conserved four-current to be defined. The Bach four-current gives rise to a
quasilocal two-surface expression for power per luminosity distance in the
Vaidya exterior of collapsing fluid interiors. This is interpreted in terms of

When Internationalization Funding Feels Tight: Satisfaction With Funding and Campus Internationalization Strategies
This study investigated predictors of satisfaction with an institution’s strategy for campus internationalization among international affairs staff (N = 1,520) and compared the varying perceptions of their institution’s funding to fulfill this mandate. This study identified factors that influenced these individuals’ sense of their institution’s internationalization strategy. Among international affairs staff who were most dissatisfied with their institution’s funding, satisfaction with how their institution managed the outsourcing of university functions, and perceived competition with other universities most influenced their perceptions of strategy. For those moderately satisfied with funding, retention of senior university leadership most influenced their perceptions of strategy. Support from senior administration, communication with faculty, and capacity to support increased student enrollment influenced perceptions of strategy for all respondents. The results of this study suggest the negotiation of the educational and entrepreneurial rationales for internationalization are far more complex—and dependent on far more factors—at institutions where international affairs staff perceive fewer human and financial resources to be available
Coordinates and 2MASS and OGLE identifications for all stars in Arp's 1965 finding chart for Baade's Window
Aims: We seek to provide 2MASS and OGLE identifications and coordinates for
all stars in the finding chart published by Arp\,(1965). This chart covers the
low extinction area around NGC 6522, also known as Baade's window, at
coordinates (l,b)=(1.02,-3.92).
Methods: A cross correlation, using numerical techniques, was performed
between a scan of the original finding chart from Arp (1965) and 2MASS and
OGLE-II images and stellar coordinates.
Results: We provide coordinates for all stars in Arp's finding chart and
2MASS and OGLE identifications wherever possible. Two identifications in

Carboplatin/taxane-induced gastrointestinal toxicity: a pharmacogenomics study on the SCOTROC1 trial
Carboplatin/taxane combination is first-line therapy for ovarian cancer. However, patients can encounter treatment delays, impaired quality of life, even death because of chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity. A candidate gene study was conducted to assess potential association of genetic variants with GI toxicity in 808 patients who received carboplatin/taxane in the Scottish Randomized Trial in Ovarian Cancer 1 (SCOTROC1). Patients were randomized into discovery and validation cohorts consisting of 404 patients each. Clinical covariates and genetic variants associated with grade III/IV GI toxicity in discovery cohort were evaluated in replication cohort. Chemotherapy-induced GI toxicity was significantly associated with seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the ATP7B, GSR, VEGFA and SCN10A genes. Patients with risk genotypes were at 1.53 to 18.01 higher odds to develop carboplatin/taxane-induced GI toxicity (P<0.01). Variants in the VEGF gene were marginally associated with survival time. Our data provide potential targets for modulation/inhibition of GI toxicity in ovarian cancer patients
