    Gear mesh compliance modeling

    A computer model has been constructed to simulate the compliance and load sharing in a spur gear mesh. The model adds the effect of rim deflections to previously developed state-of-the-art gear tooth deflection models. The effects of deflections on mesh compliance and load sharing are examined. The model can treat gear meshes composed to two external gears or an external gear driving an internal gear. The model includes deflection contributions from the bending and shear in the teeth, the Hertzian contact deformations, and primary and secondary rotations of the gear rims. The model shows that rimmed gears increase mesh compliance and, in some cases, improve load sharing

    Application of tunable diode lasers as local oscillators in an Infrared Heterodyne Radiometer (IHR)

    The utility of diode lasers as local oscillators (LOs) in a heterodyne receiver application was investigated. The CW power, spectral tunability, spectral stability, and spatial intensity distribution of the TDL outputs were measured. A tunable diode laser LO was incorporated into a laboratory Dicke-switched infrared heterodyne setup and used to measure radiometer sensitivity as well as spectroscopic characteristics of selected absorption lines of ammonia. The test results on one of the two tunable diode lasers are emphasized in an attempt to provide a comprehensive data package which may be useful for future planning purposes. The second tunable diode laser exhibits characteristics similar to the fully tested TDL with the exception that some changes in its performance characteristics as it was temperature cycled between room temperature and the operating temperature of approximately 50K occurred

    Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering From Fully-Dynamical Lattice QCD

    We present results of the first fully-dynamical lattice QCD determination of nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths in the 1S0 channel and 3S1-3D1 coupled channels. The calculations are performed with domain-wall valence quarks on the MILC staggered configurations with lattice spacing of b=0.125 fm in the isospin-symmetric limit, and in the absence of electromagnetic interactions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Baryon Axial Charge in a Finite Volume

    We compute finite-volume corrections to nucleon matrix elements of the axial-vector current. We show that knowledge of this finite-volume dependence --as well as that of the nucleon mass-- obtained using lattice QCD will allow a clean determination of the chiral-limit values of the nucleon and Delta-resonance axial-vector couplings.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Two scenarios for avalanche dynamics in inclined granular layers

    We report experimental measurements of avalanche behavior of thin granular layers on an inclined plane for low volume flow rate. The dynamical properties of avalanches were quantitatively and qualitatively different for smooth glass beads compared to irregular granular materials such as sand. Two scenarios for granular avalanches on an incline are identified and a theoretical explanation for these different scenarios is developed based on a depth-averaged approach that takes into account the differing rheologies of the granular materials.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted to Phys.     Governing body nurses' experiences of clinical commissioning groups: an observational study of two clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in England

    Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were set up under the Health & Social Care Act (2012) in England to commission healthcare services for local communities. Governing body nurses (GBNs) provide nursing leadership to commissioning services on CCGs. Little is known about how nurses function on clinical commissioning groups. We conducted observations of seven formal meetings, three informal observation sessions, and seven interviews from January 2015 to July 2015 in two CCGs in the South of England. Implicit in the GBN role is the enduring and contested assumption that nurses embody the values of caring, perception and compassion. This assumption undermines the authority of nurses in multidisciplinary teams where authority is traditionally clinically based. Emerging roles within CCGs are not based on clinical expertise but on well-established new public management concepts which promote governance over clinically based authority. While GBNS claim an authority located in clinical and managerial expertise, this is contested by members of the CCG and external stakeholders irrespective of whether it is aligned with clinical knowledge and practice or with new forms of management, as both disregard the type of expertise nurses in commissioning embody.     Nurses’ experiences of clinical commissioning group boards

    The following paper is the first in a series of three papers to highlight current practice among governing body nurses, that is, nurses who hold the statutory role of nurse member on clinical commissioning groups in England. In this paper we present findings from a small pilot study into these nurses’ experiences of Clinical Commissioning Groups. Their roles have emerged at a time of organisational change and in a period following extensive criticism of nursing and nurses in the media. We suggest that nurses’ roles and experiences are affected by these contextual ‘events’ and by the emerging structures and diversity of clinical commissioning groups. We argue that governing body nurses’ effectiveness in leading nurses and nursing on clinical commissioning groups may be affected by their relationships with other nurses, especially senior nurses, within clinical commissioning group localities. We suggest that it is timely to evaluate the effectiveness of statutory nurse member roles in influencing decision making on Clinical Commissioning Groups

    The properties of highly luminous IRAS galaxies

    From a complete sample of 154 galaxies identified with IRAS sources in a 304 sq deg area centered on the South Galactic Pole, a subsample of 58 galaxies with L sub IR/L sub B > 3 was chosen. Low resolution spectra were obtained for 30% of the subsample and redshifts and relative emission line intensities were derived. As a class these galaxies are very luminous with = 2.9 x 10 to the 11th power L sub 0 and (L sub IR) max = 1.3 x 10 to the 12th power L sub 0. CCD images and JHK photometry were obtained for many of the subsample. The galaxies are for the most part newly identified and are optically faint, with a majority showing evidence of a recent interaction. Radio continuum observations of all galaxies of the subsample were recently obtained at 20 cm VLA with about 75% being detected in a typical integration time of about 10 minutes
