    We describe an instability of viscoelastic Couette-Taylor flow that is directly analogous to the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics, with polymer molecules playing the role of magnetic field lines. By determining the conditions required for the onset of instability and the properties of the preferred modes, we distinguish it from the centrifugal and elastic instabilities studied previously. Experimental demonstration and investigation should be much easier for the viscoelastic instability than for the MRI in a liquid metal. The analogy holds with the case of a predominantly toroidal magnetic field such as is expected in an accretion disk and it may be possible to access a turbulent regime in which many modes are unstable.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letter

    In this paper, we discuss the experimental technique for real-time measurement of the lifetimes of the collision complex of bimolecular reactions. An application to the atom–molecule Br+I_2 reaction at two collision energies is made. Building on our earlier Communication [J. Chem. Phys. 95, 7763 (1991)], we report on the observed transients and lifetimes for the collision complex, the nature of the transition state, and the dynamics near threshold. Classical trajectory calculations provide a framework for deriving the global nature of the reactive potential energy surface, and for discussing the real-time, scattering, and asymptotic (product-state distribution) aspects of the dynamics. These experimental and theoretical results are compared with the extensive array of kinetic, crossed beam, and theoretical studies found in the literature for halogen radical–halogen molecule exchange reactions

    Search for direct production of charginos, neutralinos and sleptons in final states with two leptons and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √s = 8TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Searches for the electroweak production of charginos, neutralinos and sleptons in final states characterized by the presence of two leptons (electrons and muons) and missing transverse momentum are performed using 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s√ = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. Limits are set on the masses of the lightest chargino, next-to-lightest neutralino and sleptons for different lightest-neutralino mass hypotheses in simplified models. Results are also interpreted in various scenarios of the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

    Modulation of type IV collagenase and plasminogen activator in a hamster fibrosarcoma by basement membrane components and lung fibroblasts.

    The effect of basement membrane components (laminin, fibronectin and type IV collagen) and lung fibroblasts on type IV collagenase and plasminogen activator activity was investigated in a primary HSV-2-induced hamster fibrosarcoma, and its in vivo derived sublines and in vitro derived clones of varying metastatic potential. Fibronectin and type IV collagen were ineffective at influencing the expression of either type IV collagenase or plasminogen activator activity. Laminin, however, at concentrations of 1-10 micrograms ml-1 added to the serum-free culture supernatants, increased the release of type IV collagenase by up to 100% for the parental cell line. Three highly metastatic sublines (two from in vivo origin and one from in vitro cloning) showed increases of up to 300%. Non-metastatic sublines (two from in vivo origin and one from in vitro cloning), however, showed no increase in type IV collagenase activity. Plasminogen activator release from either the parental line cell or its metastatic sublines and clones, was unaffected by the addition of laminin. Addition of tumour cells to lung fibroblast monolayers resulted in an increased expression of PA activity in the supernatant, whilst type IV collagenase activity was reduced

    Population-Induced Phase Transitions and the Verification of Chemical Reaction Networks

    We show that very simple molecular systems, modeled as chemical reaction networks, can have behaviors that exhibit dramatic phase transitions at certain population thresholds. Moreover, the magnitudes of these thresholds can thwart attempts to use simulation, model checking, or approximation by differential equations to formally verify the behaviors of such systems at realistic populations. We show how formal theorem provers can successfully verify some such systems at populations where other verification methods fail

    Cold collisions of OH and Rb. I: the free collision

    We have calculated elastic and state-resolved inelastic cross sections for cold and ultracold collisions in the Rb(1S^1 S) + OH(2Π3/2^2 \Pi_{3/2}) system, including fine-structure and hyperfine effects. We have developed a new set of five potential energy surfaces for Rb-OH(2Π^2 \Pi) from high-level {\em ab initio} electronic structure calculations, which exhibit conical intersections between covalent and ion-pair states. The surfaces are transformed to a quasidiabatic representation. The collision problem is expanded in a set of channels suitable for handling the system in the presence of electric and/or magnetic fields, although we consider the zero-field limit in this work. Because of the large number of scattering channels involved, we propose and make use of suitable approximations. To account for the hyperfine structure of both collision partners in the short-range region we develop a frame-transformation procedure which includes most of the hyperfine Hamiltonian. Scattering cross sections on the order of 10−1310^{-13} cm2^2 are predicted for temperatures typical of Stark decelerators. We also conclude that spin orientation of the partners is completely disrupted during the collision. Implications for both sympathetic cooling of OH molecules in an environment of ultracold Rb atoms and experimental observability of the collisions are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 16 figure

    En el trabajo que se expone en este artículo se planteó como objetivo realizar un análisis de las diferentes medidas de integración paisajística que se utilizan en las autopistas y autovías españolas. Para ello, se ha realizado una revisión bibliográfica de la normativa, la documentación científica, las guías y demás recomendaciones en este ámbito, y se ha efectuado un inventario fotográfico que recoge las medidas de restauración observadas en las diferentes vías. Gracias a una encuesta fotográfica y al posterior análisis de la percepción del público de las diferentes medidas de integración, se han identificado las variables medioambientales clave en la integración de las autopistas en el paisaje, los aspectos de diseño más adecuados y las medidas de integración paisajística más efectivas
