Moiré interferometry applied to fracture in titanium tubes
Despite there being a substantial body of evidence to the contrary, moiré interferometry is often regarded - even by some adherents - as a curiosity of the optics lab. The present work seeks to demonstrate still further that the method can be an effective tool for practical materials research and assessment, in this case, in a novel and challenging experimental application involving fracture testing of heat exchanger tube material, the work being conducted in a conventional materials test laboratory setting. The key to the utility of the present setup lies with the priority given to its optical efficiency. In standard fracture toughness tests, it is axiomatic that standard specimen geometries be used. A dilemma arises when a material's properties are transformed to a substantial degree by the final stages of its process of manufacture, and when the very nature of the finished form dictates that standard geometries cannot be produced. The focus of this investigation was to measure crack-tip opening displacements (CTODs) in thin-walled titanium tubes. Fringe patterns corresponding to in-plane displacement contours were obtained interferometrically and the method for extracting CTODs from these is described. Significant differences in yield, ultimate strength, elongation, and fracture behaviour were observed for different material orientations

MOLYBDENUM AND MOLYBDENUM-BASE ALLOYS. PART 1. HIGH-TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES OF A MOLYBDENUM-3 PER CENT THROIUM ALLOY. PART 2. EVALUATION OF A COLUMBIUM-ZIRCONIUM-TITANIUM CLADDING ALLOY
In the first section of this report, a study was made of the high- temperature properties of a Mo-3% Th alloy to determine whether this alloy should be rejected as valueless or a full research program should be proposed. Results of this investigation show that thorium should be studied more intensively as an alloying addition for molybdenum. In the second section, an evaluation is presented of the oxidation behavior, mechanical properties, and cladding properties of Nb - 55 at.% Zr - 5 at.% Ti alloy. (W.L.H.
DEVELOPMENT OF CORROSION-RESISTANT NIOBIUM-BASE ALLOYS
The hot-water corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of niobium and a number of its alloys were evaluated relative to their usefulness in pressurized-water thermal reactors. Unalloyed niobium was found to be rapidly attacked by 600 and 680 deg F water and 750 F steam. A number of alloying additions were found which markedly improve the corrosion resistance of niobium. Of these, binary and ternary combinations of chromium, molybdenum, titanium, vanadium, and zirconium were among the most effective. Many of these alloys exhibited as low or lower weight gains than those obtained for Zircaloy-2 under similar test conditions. Most of the niobium-base alloys tested for strength exhibited excellent resistance to creep at temperatures up to 1200 deg F under stresses through 20,000 psi. (auth
Immunohistochemical localization of fibronectin as a tool for the age determination of human skin wounds
We analyzed the distribution of fibronectin in routinely embedded tissue specimens from 53 skin wounds and 6 postmortem wounds. In postmortem wounds a faint but focal positive staining was exclusively found at the margin of the specimens which dit not extend into the adjacent stroma. Vital wounds were classified into 3 groups. The first comprising lesions with wound ages ranging from a few seconds to 30 min, the second comprising those with wound ages upt to 3 weeks, and the third group with lesions more than 3 weeks old. Ten out of 17 lesions with a wound age up to 30 min showed a clear positive reaction within the wound area. Three specimens in this group were completely negative, while in 4 additional cases the result was not significantly different from postmortem lesions. These 7 cases were characterized by acute death with extremely short survival times (only seconds). In wounds up to 3 weeks old fibronectin formed a distinct network containing an increasing number of inflammatory cells corresponding to the wound age. In 2 cases with a survival time of 17 days and in all wounds older than 3 weeks fibronectin was restricted to the surface of fibroblasts and to parallel arranged fibers in the granulation tissue without any network structures. We present evidence that fibronectin is a useful marker for vital wounds with a survival time of more than a few minutes. Fibronectin appears before neutrophilic granulocytes migrate into the wound area. Since a faint positive fibronectin staining is seen in postmortem lesions and bleedings, we propose that only those wounds which show strong positive fibronectin staining also extending into the adjacent stroma should be regarded as vital

Evaluation of an Advanced Engineering Test Reactor Design
The scope of the study was primarily concerned with optimization of the geometrical and core-composition variables to achieve maximum flux in the loop region per unit core power without exceeding heat transfer and other engineering limitations. Centain other design questions are to be investigated. (A.C.
The Role of Individual Variables, Organizational Variables and Moral Intensity Dimensions in Libyan Management Accountants’ Ethical Decision Making
This study investigates the association of a broad set of variables with the ethical decision making of management accountants in Libya. Adopting a cross-sectional methodology, a questionnaire including four different ethical scenarios was used to gather data from 229 participants. For each scenario, ethical decision making was examined in terms of the recognition, judgment and intention stages of Rest’s model. A significant relationship was found between ethical recognition and ethical judgment and also between ethical judgment and ethical intention, but ethical recognition did not significantly predict ethical intention—thus providing support for Rest’s model. Organizational variables, age and educational level yielded few significant results. The lack of significance for codes of ethics might reflect their relative lack of development in Libya, in which case Libyan companies should pay attention to their content and how they are supported, especially in the light of the under-development of the accounting profession in Libya. Few significant results were also found for gender, but where they were found, males showed more ethical characteristics than females. This unusual result reinforces the dangers of gender stereotyping in business. Personal moral philosophy and moral intensity dimensions were generally found to be significant predictors of the three stages of ethical decision making studied. One implication of this is to give more attention to ethics in accounting education, making the connections between accounting practice and (in Libya) Islam. Overall, this study not only adds to the available empirical evidence on factors affecting ethical decision making, notably examining three stages of Rest’s model, but also offers rare insights into the ethical views of practising management accountants and provides a benchmark for future studies of ethical decision making in Muslim majority countries and other parts of the developing world
Updates on radiotherapy-immunotherapy combinations: Proceedings of 6th annual ImmunoRad conference.
Focal radiation therapy (RT) has attracted considerable attention as a combinatorial partner for immunotherapy (IT), largely reflecting a well-defined, predictable safety profile and at least some potential for immunostimulation. However, only a few RT-IT combinations have been tested successfully in patients with cancer, highlighting the urgent need for an improved understanding of the interaction between RT and IT in both preclinical and clinical scenarios. Every year since 2016, ImmunoRad gathers experts working at the interface between RT and IT to provide a forum for education and discussion, with the ultimate goal of fostering progress in the field at both preclinical and clinical levels. Here, we summarize the key concepts and findings presented at the Sixth Annual ImmunoRad conference
Gene-Environment Interaction in Adults’ IQ Scores: Measures of Past and Present Environment
Gene-environment interaction was studied in a sample of young (mean age 26 years, N = 385) and older (mean age 49 years, N = 370) adult males and females. Full scale IQ scores (FSIQ) were analyzed using biometric models in which additive genetic (A), common environmental (C), and unique environmental (E) effects were allowed to depend on environmental measures. Moderators under study were parental and partner educational level, as well as urbanization level and mean real estate price of the participants’ residential area. Mean effects were observed for parental education, partner education and urbanization level. On average, FSIQ scores were roughly 5 points higher in participants with highly educated parents, compared to participants whose parents were less well educated. In older participants, IQ scores were about 2 points higher when their partners were highly educated. In younger males, higher urbanization levels were associated with slightly higher FSIQ scores. Our analyses also showed increased common environmental variation in older males whose parents were more highly educated, and increased unique environmental effects in older males living in more affluent areas. Contrary to studies in children, however, the variance attributable to additive genetic effects was stable across all levels of the moderators under study. Most results were replicated for VIQ and PIQ
The Relationship Between Parenting and Delinquency: A Meta-analysis
This meta-analysis of 161 published and unpublished manuscripts was conducted to determine whether the association between parenting and delinquency exists and what the magnitude of this linkage is. The strongest links were found for parental monitoring, psychological control, and negative aspects of support such as rejection and hostility, accounting for up to 11% of the variance in delinquency. Several effect sizes were moderated by parent and child gender, child age, informant on parenting, and delinquency type, indicating that some parenting behaviors are more important for particular contexts or subsamples. Although both dimensions of warmth and support seem to be important, surprisingly very few studies focused on parenting styles. Furthermore, fewer than 20% of the studies focused on parenting behavior of fathers, despite the fact that the effect of poor support by fathers was larger than poor maternal support, particularly for sons. Implications for theory and parenting are discussed
