DESIGN TOOLS FOR INFLATABLE STRUCTURES
This paper shows different tools and approaches that can be useful for the definition of the design of pneumatic structures. Some of these tools have been applied for the design of a Tensairity® hull
Tracing Spasmodic Dysphonia: the source of Ludwig Traube’s priority
Objectives: Since the mid-20th century, one citation is given historical priority as the first description of Spasmodic Dysphonia (SD): Ludwig Traube’s 1871 case of the “spastic form of nervous hoarseness”. Our objective is to understand how this case serves as the foundation of understanding laryngeal movement disorders.
Methods: The original German paper was located and translated. Bibliographical and bibliometric methods are used to determine the citation history of this original source over the past 140 years.
Results: Although secondary citations in contemporary publications typically credit Traube for establishing the clinical entity SD, his case does not conform to currently accepted diagnostic features. Citation patterns indicate the source of Traube’s priority is publications by Arnold and Luchsinger, mid-20th century ENT clinician, particularly their influential 1965 textbook used to train US and UK clinicians on voice disorders for several generations.
Conclusions: Sometimes secondary citations in medical literature lead to the inadvertent perpetuation of factual misrepresentation. The clinical picture of Traube’s original case does not represent what clinicians would recognize as SD today. The rich 19th century literature on voice disorders is a valuable resource for present day clinicians
Energetics of rocked inhomogeneous ratchets
We study the efficiency of frictional thermal ratchets driven by finite
frequency driving force and in contact with a heat bath. The efficiency
exhibits varied behavior with driving frequency. Both nonmonotonic and
monotonic behavior have been observed. In particular the magnitude of
efficiency in finite frequency regime may be more than the efficiency in the
adiabatic regime. This is our central result for rocked ratchets. We also show
that for the simple potential we have chosen, the presence of only spatial
asymmetry (homogeneous system) or only frictional ratchet (symmetric potential
profile), the adiabatic efficiency is always more than in the nonadiabatic

Muonium as a hydrogen analogue in silicon and germanium; quantum effects and hyperfine parameters
We report a first-principles theoretical study of hyperfine interactions,
zero-point effects and defect energetics of muonium and hydrogen impurities in
silicon and germanium. The spin-polarized density functional method is used,
with the crystalline orbitals expanded in all-electron Gaussian basis sets. The
behaviour of hydrogen and muonium impurities at both the tetrahedral and
bond-centred sites is investigated within a supercell approximation. To
describe the zero-point motion of the impurities, a double adiabatic
approximation is employed in which the electron, muon/proton and host lattice
degrees of freedom are decoupled. Within this approximation the relaxation of
the atoms of the host lattice may differ for the muon and proton, although in
practice the difference is found to be slight. With the inclusion of zero-point
motion the tetrahedral site is energetically preferred over the bond-centred
site in both silicon and germanium. The hyperfine and superhyperfine
parameters, calculated as averages over the motion of the muon, agree
reasonably well with the available data from muon spin resonance experiments.Comment: 20 pages, including 9 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Morell Mackenzie’s contribution to the description of spasmodic dysphonia
Objectives: Since the middle of the 20th century most discussions of Spasmodic Dysphonia reference a paper by Ludwig Traube published in1871 as the first historical citation, crediting him with priority for this clinical syndrome. However, our recent research has determined that the original observation by Traube was published in 1864 and does not in fact describe what is currently recognized as SD. It appears that many clinics throughout Europe and North America were investigating and publishing observations on a range of voice disorders..
Methods: The wider context of work on laryngeal disorders in the 1860s-1870s is considered. One of Traube’s contemporaries, Morell Mackenzie made significant contributions to the understanding of laryngeal movement disorder and its consequences for the voice. These will be examined to gain a clearer focus on the characterization of this disorder.
Results: The clinical descriptions published by Morrell Mackenzie in the 1860s provide details which conform quite closely to our current day understanding of SD.
Conclusions: The citation of Traube’s “hysterical” patient links to mid-20th century views of the functional nature of SD and the utility of psychiatric treatment. The description presented by Mackenzie is consistent with current views of SD as a movement disorder
Multiple current reversals in forced inhomogeneous ratchets
Transport properties of overdamped Brownian paricles in a rocked thermal
ratchet with space dependent friction coefficient is studied. By tuning the
parameters, the direction of current exhibit multiple reversals, both as a
function of the thermal noise strength as well as the amplitude of rocking
force. Current reversals also occur under deterministic conditions and exhibits
intriguing structure. All these features arise due to mutual interplay between
potential asymmetry,noise, driving frequency and inhomogeneous friction.Comment: 6 figure

Epigenetic Differences in Cortical Neurons from a Pair of Monozygotic Twins Discordant for Alzheimer's Disease
DNA methylation [1], [2] is capable of modulating coordinate expression of large numbers of genes across many different pathways, and may therefore warrant investigation for their potential role between genes and disease phenotype. In a rare set of monozygotic twins discordant for Alzheimer's disease (AD), significantly reduced levels of DNA methylation were observed in temporal neocortex neuronal nuclei of the AD twin. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that epigenetic mechanisms may mediate at the molecular level the effects of life events on AD risk, and provide, for the first time, a potential explanation for AD discordance despite genetic similarities
Motor-Driven Bacterial Flagella and Buckling Instabilities
Many types of bacteria swim by rotating a bundle of helical filaments also
called flagella. Each filament is driven by a rotary motor and a very flexible
hook transmits the motor torque to the filament. We model it by discretizing
Kirchhoff's elastic-rod theory and develop a coarse-grained approach for
driving the helical filament by a motor torque. A rotating flagellum generates
a thrust force, which pushes the cell body forward and which increases with the
motor torque. We fix the rotating flagellum in space and show that it buckles
under the thrust force at a critical motor torque. Buckling becomes visible as
a supercritical Hopf bifurcation in the thrust force. A second buckling
transition occurs at an even higher motor torque. We attach the flagellum to a
spherical cell body and also observe the first buckling transition during
locomotion. By changing the size of the cell body, we vary the necessary thrust
force and thereby obtain a characteristic relation between the critical thrust
force and motor torque. We present a sophisticated analytical model for the
buckling transition based on a helical rod which quantitatively reproduces the
critical force-torque relation. Real values for motor torque, cell body size,
and the geometry of the helical filament suggest that buckling should occur in
single bacterial flagella. We also find that the orientation of pulling
flagella along the driving torque is not stable and comment on the biological
