Accretion Disc Theory: From the Standard Model Until Advection
Accretion disc theory was first developed as a theory with the local heat
balance, where the whole energy produced by a viscous heating was emitted to
the sides of the disc. One of the most important new invention of this theory
was a phenomenological treatment of the turbulent viscosity, known as ''alpha''
prescription, when the (r) component of the stress tensor was
approximated by ( P) with a unknown constant . This
prescription played the role in the accretion disc theory as well important as
the mixing-length theory of convection for stellar evolution. Sources of
turbulence in the accretion disc are discussed, including nonlinear
hydrodynamical turbulence, convection and magnetic field role. In parallel to
the optically thick geometrically thin accretion disc models, a new branch of
the optically thin accretion disc models was discovered, with a larger
thickness for the same total luminosity. The choice between these solutions
should be done of the base of a stability analysis. The ideas underlying the
necessity to include advection into the accretion disc theory are presented and
first models with advection are reviewed. The present status of the solution
for a low-luminous optically thin accretion disc model with advection is
discussed and the limits for an advection dominated accretion flows (ADAF)

LOFAR Sparse Image Reconstruction
Context. The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) radio telescope is a giant digital
phased array interferometer with multiple antennas distributed in Europe. It
provides discrete sets of Fourier components of the sky brightness. Recovering
the original brightness distribution with aperture synthesis forms an inverse
problem that can be solved by various deconvolution and minimization methods
Aims. Recent papers have established a clear link between the discrete nature
of radio interferometry measurement and the "compressed sensing" (CS) theory,
which supports sparse reconstruction methods to form an image from the measured
visibilities. Empowered by proximal theory, CS offers a sound framework for
efficient global minimization and sparse data representation using fast
algorithms. Combined with instrumental direction-dependent effects (DDE) in the
scope of a real instrument, we developed and validated a new method based on
this framework Methods. We implemented a sparse reconstruction method in the
standard LOFAR imaging tool and compared the photometric and resolution
performance of this new imager with that of CLEAN-based methods (CLEAN and
MS-CLEAN) with simulated and real LOFAR data Results. We show that i) sparse
reconstruction performs as well as CLEAN in recovering the flux of point
sources; ii) performs much better on extended objects (the root mean square
error is reduced by a factor of up to 10); and iii) provides a solution with an
effective angular resolution 2-3 times better than the CLEAN images.
Conclusions. Sparse recovery gives a correct photometry on high dynamic and
wide-field images and improved realistic structures of extended sources (of
simulated and real LOFAR datasets). This sparse reconstruction method is
compatible with modern interferometric imagers that handle DDE corrections (A-
and W-projections) required for current and future instruments such as LOFAR

The DREEM, part 1: measurement of the educational environment in an osteopathy teaching program
Background
Measurement of the educational environment has become more common in health professional education programs. Information gained from these investigations can be used to implement and measure changes to the curricula, educational delivery and the physical environment. A number of questionnaires exist to measure the educational environment, and the most commonly utilised of these is the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM).
Methods
The DREEM was administered to students in all year levels of the osteopathy program at Victoria University (VU), Melbourne, Australia. Students also completed a demographic survey. Inferential and correlational statistics were employed to investigate the educational environment based on the scores obtained from the DREEM.
Results
A response rate of 90% was achieved. The mean total DREEM score was 135.37 (+/- 19.33) with the scores ranging from 72 to 179. Some subscales and items demonstrated differences for gender, clinical phase, age and whether the student was in receipt of a government allowance.
Conclusions
There are a number of areas in the program that are performing well, and some aspects that could be improved. Overall students rated the VU osteopathy program as more positive than negative. The information obtained in the present study has identified areas for improvement and will enable the program leaders to facilitate changes. It will also provide other educational institutions with data on which they can make comparisons with their own programs
The role of mental disorders for the risk and speed of transition to alcohol use disorders among community youth. Psychol Med 2011; 41
Background. Among adolescents and young adults with DSM-IV alcohol use disorders (AUDs), there are interindividual differences in the speed of transition from initial alcohol use (AU) to AUD. AUDs are highly co-morbid with other mental disorders. The factors associated with rapid transition from first AU to AUD remain unknown and the role of mental disorders in rapid transitions is unclear. Given this background we examined (1) whether prior anxiety, mood, externalizing and non-alcohol substance use disorders are related to the risk and speed of transition from first AU to DSM-IV alcohol abuse (AA) and alcohol dependence (AD) and (2) whether early age of onset of prior mental disorders (PMDs) is a promoter of rapid transition. Method. A total of 3021 community subjects (97.7 % lifetime AU) aged 14-24 years at baseline were followed up prospectively for up to 10 years. AU and mental disorders were assessed with the DSM-IV/M-CIDI. Results. Among subjects with lifetime AU, several PMDs, such as specific phobia, bipolar disorder and nicotine dependence, were associated with an increased risk of AUD independent of externalizing disorders. Associations of PMDs with the speed of transition to AUDs were mostly weak and inconsistent. Only social phobia and externalizing disorders were associated with faster transitions to AD even after adjustment for other PMDs. Earlier age of onset of PMD was not associated with rapid transition. Conclusions. Mental disorders are associated with the risk of AUD. With the possible exception of social phobia and externalizing disorders, they do not promote rapid transition, even if they occur particularly early. Future research needs to identify factors relevant to rapid transition to AUD

Abstract The production of parasite transmission stages was investigated in the faeces of 77 farm-bred ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus). Coccidian oocysts (Eimeria sp.), and nematode eggs (Heterakis sp., and Capillaria-like eggs) were recovered before and after release but all birds were treated prior to release. Treatment with fenbendazole significantly reduced the abundance of transmission-stage excretion for all parasites, and reduced the prevalence in the case of Eimeria sp. and Heterakis sp. Nonetheless, a significant increase in the excretion abundance for all parasites and in the prevalence of Eimeria sp. and Heterakis sp. was found after release. Eggs of Ascaridia sp. were found only after releasing, suggesting infection ocurred in the wild. A negative relationship was found between the pheasant body condition and Heterakis excretion abundance and a higher abundance of Capillaria sp. eggs in female birds. No significant relationship was found between parasite excretion abundance and pheasant survival. Despite this, results suggest that an increase in the excretion of parasite transmission stages follows the release of captive pheasants into the wild. This can in part explain restocking failures, but also means that autochtonous freeliving birds may become exposed to new and potentially harmful pathogens. To avoid these risks it is proposed that improved prophylactic measures should be taken

Objective: This study describes subgingival bacterial profiles associated with clinical periodontal status in Ghanaian adolescents with or without progression of attachment loss. Materials and methods: Among 500 adolescents included in a cohort study, 397 returned 2 years later for a periodontal re-examination, including full-mouth CAL measurements. At follow-up, a subgroup of 98 adolescents was also subjected to bacterial sampling with paper points at four periodontal sites (mesial aspect of 11, 26, 31, and 46) and analyzed with the checkerboard DNAĂDNA hybridization technique against DNA-probes from nine periodontitis-associated bacterial species. Results: The 98 Ghanaian adolescents examined in the present study were similar to the entire group examined at the 2-year follow-up with respect to age, gender, and CAL ]3 mm. A high detection frequency of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella intermedia (99%) using checkerboard analysis was found, while for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans the detection frequency was B50%. A strong correlation was found at the individual level between the presence of P. intermedia and the total CAL change, and P. intermedia and Porphyromonas gingivalis were strongly correlated with a change in CAL and probing pocket depth (PPD) at the sampled sites. In a linear regression model, a significant discriminating factor for the total CAL change in the dentition during the 2-year follow-up period was obtained for P. intermedia and public school. Conclusion: This study indicates that subgingival bacterial species other than A. actinomycetemcomitans, for example, P. intermedia, have a significant association with periodontal breakdown (change in CAL) in Ghanaian adolescents with progression of periodontal attachment loss
