    Standardization and application of microsatellite markers for variety identification in tomato and wheat

    The present study is part of a EU project that aims to demonstrate the technical viability of STMS markers for variety identification. As examples two important European crop species, tomato and wheat were chosen. Initially, about 30-40 STMS markers were used to identify a set of 20 good markers per crop and to standardise the methodology and the interpretation of the results in different laboratories. Several systems were used for the detection of STMS polymorphisms. The selected STMS markers are being tested on 500 varieties of each species and databases are being constructed. The first comparisons of data generated by the different laboratories revealed a high degree of agreement.     Work was completed on the near-field range control software. The capabilities of the data processing software were expanded with the addition of probe compensation. In addition, the user can process the measured data from the same computer terminal used for range control. The design of the laser metrology system was completed. It provides precise measruement of probe location during near-field measurements as well as position data for control of the translation beam and probe cart.     SU(3) breaking in hyperon transition vector form factors

    We present a calculation of the SU(3)-breaking corrections to the hyperon transition vector form factors to O(p4)\mathcal{O}(p^4) in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with finite-range regularisation. Both octet and decuplet degrees of freedom are included. We formulate a chiral expansion at the kinematic point Q2=−(MB1−MB2)2Q^2=-(M_{B_1}-M_{B_2})^2, which can be conveniently accessed in lattice QCD. The two unknown low-energy constants at this point are constrained by lattice QCD simulation results for the Σ−→n\Sigma^-\rightarrow n and Ξ0→Σ+\Xi^0\rightarrow \Sigma^+ transition form factors. Hence we determine lattice-informed values of f1f_1 at the physical point. This work constitutes progress towards the precise determination of ∣Vus∣|V_{us}| from hyperon semileptonic decays

    Detection of a Hard Tail in the X-ray Spectrum of the Z Source GX 349+2

    We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of the Z source GX 349+2 covering the energy range 0.1-200 keV. The presence of flares in the light curve indicates that the source was in the flaring branch during the BeppoSAX observation. We accumulated energy spectra separately for the non-flaring intervals and the flares. In both cases the continuum is well described by a soft blackbody (kTBB∼0.5k T_{BB} \sim 0.5 keV) and a Comptonized spectrum corresponding to an electron temperature of kTe∼2.7k T_e \sim 2.7 keV, optical depth τ∼10\tau \sim 10 (for a spherical geometry), and seed photon temperature of kTW∼1k T_W \sim 1 keV. All temperatures tend to increase during the flares. In the non-flaring emission a hard tail dominates the spectrum above 30 keV. This can be fit by a power law with photon index ∼2\sim 2, contributing ∼2\sim 2% of the total source luminosity over the BeppoSAX energy range. A comparison with hard tails detected in some soft states of black hole binaries suggests that a similar mechanism could originate these components in black hole and neutron star systems.Comment: 15 pages, including 8 figures, to appear in Ap
