    Comparing league formats with respect to match importance in Belgian football

    Recently, most clubs in the highest Belgian football division have become convinced that the format of their league should be changed. Moreover, the TV station that broadcasts the league is pleading for a more attractive competition. However, the clubs have not been able to agree on a new league format, mainly because they have conflicting interests. In this paper, we compare the current league format, and three other formats that have been considered by the Royal Belgian Football Association. We simulate the course of each of these league formats, based on historical match results. We assume that the attractiveness of a format is determined by the importance of its games; our importance measure for a game is based on the number of teams for which this game can be decisive to reach a given goal. Furthermore, we provide an overview of how each league format aligns with the expectations and interests of each type of club

    Lower Bounds for the Graph Homomorphism Problem

    The graph homomorphism problem (HOM) asks whether the vertices of a given nn-vertex graph GG can be mapped to the vertices of a given hh-vertex graph HH such that each edge of GG is mapped to an edge of HH. The problem generalizes the graph coloring problem and at the same time can be viewed as a special case of the 22-CSP problem. In this paper, we prove several lower bound for HOM under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) assumption. The main result is a lower bound 2Ω(nlog⁥hlog⁥log⁥h)2^{\Omega\left( \frac{n \log h}{\log \log h}\right)}. This rules out the existence of a single-exponential algorithm and shows that the trivial upper bound 2O(nlog⁥h)2^{{\mathcal O}(n\log{h})} is almost asymptotically tight. We also investigate what properties of graphs GG and HH make it difficult to solve HOM(G,H)(G,H). An easy observation is that an O(hn){\mathcal O}(h^n) upper bound can be improved to O(hvc⁥(G)){\mathcal O}(h^{\operatorname{vc}(G)}) where vc⁥(G)\operatorname{vc}(G) is the minimum size of a vertex cover of GG. The second lower bound hΩ(vc⁥(G))h^{\Omega(\operatorname{vc}(G))} shows that the upper bound is asymptotically tight. As to the properties of the "right-hand side" graph HH, it is known that HOM(G,H)(G,H) can be solved in time (f(Δ(H)))n(f(\Delta(H)))^n and (f(tw⁥(H)))n(f(\operatorname{tw}(H)))^n where Δ(H)\Delta(H) is the maximum degree of HH and tw⁥(H)\operatorname{tw}(H) is the treewidth of HH. This gives single-exponential algorithms for graphs of bounded maximum degree or bounded treewidth. Since the chromatic number χ(H)\chi(H) does not exceed tw⁥(H)\operatorname{tw}(H) and Δ(H)+1\Delta(H)+1, it is natural to ask whether similar upper bounds with respect to χ(H)\chi(H) can be obtained. We provide a negative answer to this question by establishing a lower bound (f(χ(H)))n(f(\chi(H)))^n for any function ff. We also observe that similar lower bounds can be obtained for locally injective homomorphisms.Comment: 19 page

    Advancing Team Cohesion: Using an Escape Room as a Novel Approach

    Objective: An escape room was used to study teamwork and its determinants, which have been found to relate to the quality and safety of patient care delivery. This pilot study aimed to explore the value of an escape room as a mechanism for improving cohesion among interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Methods: This research was conducted at a nonprofit medical center in Southern California. All participants who work on a team were invited to participate. Authors employed an interrupted within-subjects design, with two pre- and post- escape room questionnaires related to two facets of group cohesion: (belonging – (PGC-B) and morale (PGC-M)). Participants rated their perceptions of group cohesion before, after, and one-month after the escape room. The main outcome measures included PGC-B/M. Results: Sixty-two teams participated (n 280 participants) of which 31 teams (50%) successfully “escaped” in the allotted 45 minutes. There was a statistically significant difference in PGC between the three time periods, F(4, 254) 24.10, p \u3c .001; Wilks’ K .725; partial g2 .275. Results indicated significantly higher scores for PGC immediately after the escape room and at the one-month follow-up compared to baseline. Conclusions: This work offers insights into the utility of using an escape room as a team building intervention in interprofessional healthcare teams. Considering the modifiability of escape rooms, they may function as valuable team building mechanisms in healthcare. More work is needed to determine how escape rooms compare to more traditional team building curriculums

    Primary physical education, coaches and continuing professional development

More recently, some teaching of PE in primary schools has been undertaken by coaches (mostly football coaches). These coaches hold national governing body awards but do not hold teaching qualifications. Thus, coaches may not be adequately prepared to teach PE in curriculum time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of a group of community-based football coaches working in primary schools for the impact of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme on their ability to undertake ‘specified work’ to cover PE in primary schools. The programme focused on four areas identified as important to enable coaches to cover specified work: short- and medium-term planning, pedagogy, knowledge of the curriculum and reflection. Results showed that for the majority of coaches the CPD programme had made them more aware of the importance of these four areas and had helped to develop their knowledge and ability to put this into practice in covering planning, preparation and assessment time. However, further input is still required to develop coaches’ knowledge and understanding in all four areas, but especially their curriculum knowledge, as well as their ability to put these into practice consistently. These findings are discussed in relation to the implications of employing coaches to cover the teaching of PE in primary schools and, if employed, what CPD coaches need to develop the necessary knowledge, skill and understanding for covering specified work in schools
