Influence of spinal cord stimulation on evoked potentials by cutaneous electrical stimulation

    Get PDF
In the past, limited research has been done to investigate the influence of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for treatment of chronic pain on evoked potentials (EP). Further insight into the mechanism of SCS may provide explanations for unsatisfactory results with this therapy in certain subpopulations. It also might predict effectiveness of SCS. In previous research MEG responses were measured on median and tibial nerve stimulations in chronic pain patients with and without SCS (1). However, this stimulation method preferentially activates large myelinated proprioceptive fibres, leaving painrelated small fibres unrelated. We expect that the observation of pain processing is impaired by large amounts of non-painrelated activity

Economic consequences of reproductive performance in dairy cattle

The net economic value of reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle was estimated using a stochastic dynamic simulation model. The objective was to compare the economic consequences of reproductive performance scenarios (“average” and “poor”) of a cow having a good reproductive performance and to explore which reproductive factors have an important impact on economic efficiency. A “good” reproductive performance scenario was defined with 1 ovulation rate (POVUi), 0.7 estrus detection rate (PEst), 0.7 conception rate (PCon), 0.03 incidence rate of postpartum disorders prolonging the ovarian cyclicity (CO), 0.2 incidence rate of postpartum disorders reducing conception (ME), 0.05 embryonic death rate (ED), and voluntary waiting period (VWP) of 9 wks pp (post partum). In the current situation of dairy cows in the Netherlands, an “average” reproductive scenario (0.95 POVUi, 0.5 PEst, 0.5 Pcon, 0.07 CO, 0.27 ME, 0.07 ED and VWP of 12 wks pp) and a “poor” reproductive scenario (0.90 POVUi, 0.3 PEst, 0.3 Pcon, 0.11 CO, 0.33 ME, 0.09 ED and VWP of 15 wks pp) were identified. A sensitivity analysis was performed by comparing changes of single effect of factors in a good and poor scenario with the average scenario. The mean net economic loss (NELi) compared with the good scenario was €34 and €231 per cow per year for the average and poor reproductive performance scenario, respectively. Increasing the calving interval resulted in greater economic loss. The important factors on the cost of reproductive efficiency were the involuntary culling cost and the return of milk production. Variation in PCon, PEst, ME, ED, and VWP had large impacts on economic benefits. Keywords: Dairy cow; Reproductive performance; Simulation model; Economic

T2 mapping outperforms normalised FLAIR in identifying hippocampal sclerosis

    Get PDF
Rationale Qualitatively, FLAIR MR imaging is sensitive to the detection of hippocampal sclerosis (HS). Quantitative analysis of T2 maps provides a useful objective measure and increased sensitivity over visual inspection of T2-weighted scans. We aimed to determine whether quantification of normalised FLAIR is as sensitive as T2 mapping in detection of HS. Method Dual echo T2 and FLAIR MR images were retrospectively analysed in 27 patients with histologically confirmed HS and increased T2 signal in ipsilateral hippocampus and 14 healthy controls. Regions of interest were manually segmented in all hippocampi aiming to avoid inclusion of CSF. Hippocampal T2 values and measures of normalised FLAIR Signal Intensity (nFSI) were compared in healthy and sclerotic hippocampi. Results HS was identified on T2 values with 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity. HS was identified on nFSI measures with 60% sensitivity and 93% specificity. Conclusion T2 mapping is superior to nFSI for identification of HS

An eccentric companion at the edge of the brown dwarf desert orbiting the 2.4 Msun giant star HIP67537

We report the discovery of a substellar companion around the giant star HIP67537. Based on precision radial velocity measurements from CHIRON and FEROS high-resolution spectroscopic data, we derived the following orbital elements for HIP67537b\,b: mb_bsinii = 11.11.1+0.4^{+0.4}_{-1.1} Mjup_{\rm {\tiny jup}}, aa = 4.90.13+0.14^{+0.14}_{-0.13} AU and ee = 0.590.02+0.05^{+0.05}_{-0.02}. Considering random inclination angles, this object has \gtrsim 65% probability to be above the theoretical deuterium-burning limit, thus it is one of the few known objects in the planet to brown-dwarf transition region. In addition, we analyzed the Hipparcos astrometric data of this star, from which we derived a minimum inclination angle for the companion of \sim 2 deg. This value corresponds to an upper mass limit of \sim 0.3 M_\odot, therefore the probability that HIP67537b\,b is stellar in nature is \lesssim 7%. The large mass of the host star and the high orbital eccentricity makes HIP67537b\,b a very interesting and rare substellar object. This is the second candidate companion in the brown dwarf desert detected in the sample of intermediate-mass stars targeted by the EXPRESS radial velocity program, which corresponds to a detection fraction of ff = 1.60.5+2.0^{+2.0}_{-0.5}%. This value is larger than the fraction observed in solar-type stars, providing new observational evidence of an enhanced formation efficiency of massive substellar companions in massive disks. Finally, we speculate about different formation channels for this object.Comment: Accepted for publication to A&

Towards a Robust Method of Modelling Leaf Appearance in Plants

    Get PDF
The thermal interval for leaf tip appearance (phyllochron) is a critical variable for modelling plant development and growth. Phyllochron varies across environments, but is generally constant for a species grown in specific environments. For example, the phyllochron in maize is lower in temperate environments than in tropical and subtropical environments. The limitation of existing data is that each experiment has been evaluated in a narrow range of environments, and underlying mechanisms have not been adequately examined. Consequently, no method is available to model the variation across environments. Models use constant values that are fixed for particular environments. This situation is unsatisfactory, as model users must have values that have been determined for their locality. A method of adjusting the value of phyllochron according to genotype adaptation groups or environmental conditions is required. Of these two options, the latter appears most promising as there is little, if any, variation among genotypes when grown in specific environments. Recent information shows that phyllochron in maize is related to light intensity. The data also suggests that phyllochron depends on the adequacy of current photosynthesis (source) to meet the demands of the plant for growth (sink), one aspect of which is the production of new leaves. This paper reports on concepts and early progress in relating phyllochron to both irradiance and thermal time

    Assesseer leesbegripstoetse werklik leesbegrip?
