Hanbury Brown Twiss effect for ultracold quantum gases
We have studied 2-body correlations of atoms in an expanding cloud above and
below the Bose-Einstein condensation threshold. The observed correlation
function for a thermal cloud shows a bunching behavior, while the correlation
is flat for a coherent sample. These quantum correlations are the atomic
analogue of the Hanbury Brown Twiss effect. We observe the effect in three
dimensions and study its dependence on cloud size.Comment: Figure 1 availabl
Dirac neutrino mass from the beta decay end-point modified by the dynamics of a Lorentz-violating equation of motion
Using a generalized procedure for obtaining the equation of motion of a
propagating fermionic particle, we examine previous claims for a lightlike
preferred axis embedded in the framework of Lorentz-invariance violation with
preserved algebra. In a high energy scale, the corresponding equation of motion
is reduced to a conserving lepton number chiral (VSR) equation, and in a low
energy scale, the Dirac equation for a free is recovered. The new dynamics
introduces some novel ingredients (modified cross section) to the phenomenology

The GRAVITY fringe tracker: correlation between optical path residuals and atmospheric parameters
After the first year of observations with the GRAVITY fringe tracker, we
compute correlations between the optical path residuals and atmospheric and
astronomical parameters. The median residuals of the optical path residuals are
180 nm on the ATs and 270 nm on the UTs. The residuals are uncorrelated with
the target magnitudes for Kmag below 5.5 on ATs (9 on UTs). The correlation
with the coherence time is however extremely clear, with a drop-off in fringe

The sediment of mixtures of charged colloids: segregation and inhomogeneous electric fields
We theoretically study sedimentation-diffusion equilibrium of dilute binary,
ternary, and polydisperse mixtures of colloidal particles with different
buoyant masses and/or charges. We focus on the low-salt regime, where the
entropy of the screening ions drives spontaneous charge separation and the
formation of an inhomogeneous macroscopic electric field. The resulting
electric force lifts the colloids against gravity, yielding highly
nonbarometric and even nonmonotonic colloidal density profiles. The most
profound effect is the phenomenon of segregation into layers of colloids with
equal mass-per-charge, including the possibility that heavy colloidal species
float onto lighter ones
Translocator protein in late stage Alzheimer\u27s disease and Dementia with Lewy bodies brains
OBJECTIVE: Increased translocator protein (TSPO), previously known as the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor (PBR), in glial cells of the brain has been used as a neuroinflammation marker in the early and middle stages of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). In this study, we investigated the changes in TSPO density with respect to late stage AD and DLB.
METHODS: TSPO density was measured in multiple regions of postmortem human brains in 20 different cases: seven late stage AD cases (Braak amyloid average: C; Braak tangle average: VI; Aged 74-88, mean: 83 ± 5 years), five DLB cases (Braak amyloid average: C; Braak tangle average: V; Aged 79-91, mean: 84 ± 4 years), and eight age-matched normal control cases (3 males, 5 females: aged 77-92 years; mean: 87 ± 6 years). RESULTS: No significant changes were found in TSPO density of the frontal cortex, striatum, thalamus, or red nucleus of the AD and DLB brains. A significant reduction in TSPO density was found in the substantia nigra (SN) of the AD and DLB brains compared to that of age-matched healthy controls.
INTERPRETATION: This distinct pattern of TSPO density change in late stage AD and DLB cases may imply the occurrence of microglia dystrophy in late stage neurodegeneration. Furthermore, TSPO may not only be a microglia activation marker in early stage AD and DLB, but TSPO may also be used to monitor microglia dysfunction in the late stage of these diseases
Profound genetic divergence and asymmetric parental genome contributions as hallmarks of hybrid speciation in polyploid toads.
The evolutionary causes and consequences of allopolyploidization, an exceptional pathway to instant hybrid speciation, are poorly investigated in animals. In particular, when and why hybrid polyploids versus diploids are produced, and constraints on sources of paternal and maternal ancestors, remain underexplored. Using the Palearctic green toad radiation (including bisexually reproducing species of three ploidy levels) as model, we generate a range-wide multi-locus phylogeny of 15 taxa and present four new insights: (i) at least five (up to seven) distinct allotriploid and allotetraploid taxa have evolved in the Pleistocene; (ii) all maternal and paternal ancestors of hybrid polyploids stem from two deeply diverged nuclear clades (6 Mya, 3.1-9.6 Mya), with distinctly greater divergence than the parental species of diploid hybrids found at secondary contact zones; (iii) allotriploid taxa possess two conspecific genomes and a deeply diverged allospecific one, suggesting that genomic imbalance and divergence are causal for their partly clonal reproductive mode; (iv) maternal versus paternal genome contributions exhibit asymmetry, with the maternal nuclear (and mitochondrial) genome of polyploids always coming from the same clade, and the paternal genome from the other. We compare our findings with similar patterns in diploid/polyploid vertebrates, and suggest deep ancestral divergence as a precondition for successful allopolyploidization
Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics Integral Field Spectroscopy of a Tightly Collimated Bipolar Jet from the Herbig Ae star LkHa 233
We have used the integral field spectrograph OSIRIS and laser guide star
adaptive optics at Keck Observatory to obtain high angular resolution (0.06"),
moderate spectral resolution (R ~ 3800) images of the bipolar jet from the
Herbig Ae star LkHa 233, seen in near-IR [Fe II] emission at 1.600 & 1.644
microns. This jet is narrow and tightly collimated, with an opening angle of
only 9 degrees, and has an average radial velocity of ~ 100 km/s. The jet and
counterjet are asymmetric, with the red-shifted jet much clumpier than its
counterpart at the angular resolution of our observations. The observed
properties are in general similar to jets seen around T Tauri stars, though it
has a relatively large mass flux of (1.2e-7 +- 0.3e-7) M_sun/year, near the
high end of the observed mass flux range around T Tauri stars. We also
spatially resolve an inclined circumstellar disk around LkHa 233, which
obscures the star from direct view. By comparison with numerical radiative
transfer disk models, we estimate the disk midplane to be inclined i = 65 +- 5
degrees relative to the plane of the sky. Since the star is seen only in
scattered light at near-infrared wavelengths, we detect only a small fraction
of its intrinsic flux. Because previous estimates of its stellar properties did
not account for this, either LkHa 233 must be located closer than the
previously believed, or its true luminosity must be greater than previously
supposed, consistent with its being a ~4 M_sun star near the stellar birthline.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Ap
Non-equilibrium sedimentation of colloids on the particle scale
We investigate sedimentation of model hard sphere-like colloidal dispersions
confined in horizontal capillaries using laser scanning confocal microscopy,
dynamical density functional theory, and Brownian dynamics computer
simulations. For homogenized initial states we obtain quantitative agreement of
the results from the respective approaches for the time evolution of the
one-body density distribution and the osmotic pressure on the walls. We
demonstrate that single particle information can be obtained experimentally in
systems that were initialized further out-of-equilibrium such that complex

The Solar-System-Scale Disk Around AB Aurigae
The young star AB Aurigae is surrounded by a complex combination of gas-rich
and dust dominated structures. The inner disk which has not been studied
previously at sufficient resolution and imaging dynamic range seems to contain
very little gas inside a radius of least 130 astronomical units (AU) from the
star. Using adaptive-optics coronagraphy and polarimetry we have imaged the
dust in an annulus between 43 and 302 AU from the star, a region never seen
before. An azimuthal gap in an annulus of dust at a radius of 102 AU, along
with a clearing at closer radii inside this annulus, suggests the formation of
at least one small body at an orbital distance of about 100 AU. This structure
seems consistent with crude models of mean motion resonances, or accumulation
of material at two of the Lagrange points relative to the putative object and
the star. We also report a low significance detection of a point source in this
outer annulus of dust. This source may be an overdensity in the disk due to
dust accreting onto an unseen companion. An alternate interpretation suggests
that the object's mass is between 5 and 37 times the mass of Jupiter. The

Diffuse reflection of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a rough evanescent wave mirror
We present experimental results showing the diffuse reflection of a
Bose-Einstein condensate from a rough mirror, consisting of a dielectric
substrate supporting a blue-detuned evanescent wave. The scattering is
anisotropic, more pronounced in the direction of the surface propagation of the
