    Development of an Epifaunal Assemblage on an Estuarine Artificial Reef

    Twelve Polyolefinℱ cones were placed in Choctawhatchee Bay, Okaloosa County, Florida, on 20 Oct. 1987, as an artificial reef to examine the succession of the associated epibenthic invertebrate assemblage and its relationship to environmental factors. Ninety-five epifaunal settling plates with individual surface areas of 706.5 cm2 were removed from the reefs. The epifaunal settling plates bore 124,893 organisms from 90 taxa. The number of taxa and individuals associated with the reef gradually increased from deployment in Oct. to a maximum in June. Species diversity tended to increase through the 12-mo study. Coverage by the epifauna stabilized after 4 mo of deployment, A canonical correlation model attributed 86% of the variation in taxa abundance to variation in the independent variables equatorial moon position, salinity, temperature, reef module surface area, absolute time from noon, and vertical height of each settling plate above the substrate. Initial colonizers were typically motile organisms that were gradually succeeded by sedentary organisms. Arborescent bryozoans may have created a complex microhabitat, which facilitated the colonization of grazing species such as gastropods

    The role of fluid catalytic cracking in process optimisation for petroleum refineries

    Petroleum refining is a chemical process in which the raw material (crude oil) is converted to finished commercial products for end users. The fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit is a key asset in refineries, requiring optimised processes in the context of engineering design. Following the first stage of separation of crude oil in a distillation tower, an additional 40 per cent quantity is attainable in the gasoline pool with further conversion of the downgraded product of crude oil (residue from the distillation tower) using a catalyst in the FCC process. Effective removal of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon and heavy metals from FCC gasoline requires greater separation efficiency and involves an enormous environmental significance. The FCC unit is primarily a reactor and regeneration system which employs cyclone systems for separation. Catalyst losses in FCC cyclones lead to high particulate matter emission on the regenerator side and fines carryover into the product on the reactor side. This paper aims at demonstrating the importance of FCC unit design criteria in terms of technical performance and compliance with environmental legislation. A systematic review of state-of-the-art FCC technology was carried out, identifying its key technical challenges and sources of emissions. Case studies of petroleum refineries in Nigeria were assessed against selected global case studies. The review highlights the need for further modelling investigations to help improve FCC design to more effectively meet product specification requirements while complying with stricter environmental legislation

    Coronary reserve in patients with aortic valve disease before and after successful aortic valve replacement

    In patients with aortic valve disease and normal coronary angiograms coronary reserve was determined by the coronary sinus thermodilution technique. Three groups of patients were studied: 37 preoperative patients; 18 different patients 12.52 months after aortic valve replacement and seven control subjects with no cardiac disease. Coronary flow ratio (dipyridamole/rest) was diminished in preoperative compared with postoperative patients (1.66±0.44 vs 2.22±0.85; P<0.05) as well as with controls (2.80±0.84; P<0.01), and corresponding coronary resistance ratio (dipyridamolej rest) was higher in preoperative patients than in both other groups (0.61±0.17 vs 0.48±0.14; P<0.05 vs 0.37±0.10; P<0.01). Differences in the flow ratio, but not in the resistance ratio, were significant (P<0.05) in patients after aortic valve replacement compared with controls. Total coronary sinus blood flow at rest was elevated in preoperative compared with both postoperative patients and controls (252±99 vs 169±63; P<0.01; vs 170±35 ml.min−1, P<0.05), whereas flows after maximal vasodilation did not differ among the three groups (416± 184 vs 361 ± 150 vs 488± 235 ml.min−1). Postoperative patients showed a distinct, though not total regression of left ventricular angiographic muscle mass index and wall thickness. Nine of the 18 postoperative patients showed a normal coronary flow reserve and nine showed subnormal response. These two subgroups did not differ with respect to preoperative macroscopic and microscopic measures of hypertrophy. Thus in aortic valve disease, the reduced coronary vasodilator capacity is mainly due to an elevated coronary flow at rest, while the maximal coronary blood flow achieved is identical to that of postoperative patients and controls. With regression of left ventricular hypertrophy, flow at rest decreases and this leads to a distinct improvement of coronary flow reserv

    Traditional old dietary pattern of castellana grotte (Apulia) is associated with healthy outcomes

    Background: There is still room for further studies aimed at investigating the most widespread diets in the Mediterranean area. The objective of the study is to analyze the relation of food group intake to clinical chemical indicators of health, and also to compare the food group intake with healthy well-known diet indices. Methods: Lifestyle, dietary, and clinical data collected in 2005/2006 and 2012/2018 from Castellana Grotte, located in the rural area of Apulia, were analyzed. The study populations included newly recruited subjects at each time period (n = 1870) as well as subjects examined twice and compared over time regarding health indicators (n = 734). Diet was assessed through a validated food frequency questionnaire. Three healthy diet indices were calculated and related to 29 food groups. We also performed prospective regression of food group consumption with health indicators. Results: The diet over the time period of observation was very stable and consisted of a high proportion of vegetables, fruit and grains. No major changes in body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure were observed. Consumption of low-fat dairy, juices, olive oil, and water were related to reductions in weight gain, systolic blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and cholesterol (total and HDL) levels, in that order. Over the time periods we observed only a slight decrease of adherence to the Meddietscore. The correlations of the healthy diet indices with food groups revealed some differences among the indices, mostly regarding the intake of fruit and vegetables. Conclusions: The dietary pattern of Apulia is in line with many principles of a healthy diet and the cohort population seems to be less liable to undergo a transition to a westernized diet

    Age-Related Central Auditory Processing Disorder, MCI, and Dementia in an Older Population of Southern Italy

    Objective: We explored the associations of age-related central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia in an older population-based cohort in Apulia, Southern Italy (GreatAGE Study). / Study Design: Cross-sectional data from a population-based study. / Setting: Castellana Grotte, Bari, Italy. / Subjects and Methods: Between 2013 and 2018, MCI, dementia, age-related CAPD (no disabling hearing loss and 65 years. / Results: The prevalences of age-related CAPD, MCI, and dementia were 14.15%, 15.79%, and 3.58%, respectively. Among the subjects with MCI and dementia, 19.61% and 42.37% had age-related CAPD. In the regressive models, age-related CAPD was associated with MCI (odds ratio, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.01-2.21) and dementia (odds ratio, 2.23; 95% CI, 1.12-4.42). Global cognition scores were positively associated with increasing SSI-ICM scores in linear models. All models were adjusted for demographics and metabolic serum biomarkers. / Conclusion: The tight association of age-related CAPD with MCI and dementia suggests the involvement of central auditory pathways in neurodegeneration, but it is not clear which is the real direction of this association. However, CAPD is a possible diagnostic marker of cognitive dysfunction in older patients

    Association of Neuroretinal Thinning and Microvascular Changes with Hypertension in an Older Population in Southern Italy

    Background: Retinal microvasculature assessment at capillary level may potentially aid the evaluation of early microvascular changes due to hypertension. We aimed to investigate associations between the measures obtained using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCT-A) and hypertension, in a southern Italian older population. Methods: We performed a crosssectional analysis from a population-based study on 731 participants aged 65 years+ subdivided into two groups according to the presence or absence of blood hypertension without hypertensive retinopathy. The average thickness of the ganglion cell complex (GCC) and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) were measured. The foveal avascular zone area, vascular density (VD) at the macular site and of the optic nerve head (ONH) and radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) plexi were evaluated. Logistic regression was applied to assess the association of ocular measurements with hypertension. Results: GCC thickness was inversely associated with hypertension (odds ratio (OR): 0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.97–1). A rarefaction of VD of the ONH plexus at the inferior temporal sector (OR: 0.95, 95% CI: 0.91–0.99) and, conversely, a higher VD of the ONH and RPC plexi inside optic disc (OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.04–1.10; OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.02–1.06, respectively) were significantly associated with hypertension. Conclusion: A neuroretinal thinning involving GCC and a change in capillary density at the peripapillary network were related to the hypertension in older patients without hypertensive retinopathy. Assessing peripapillary retinal microvasculature using OCT-A may be a useful non-invasive approach to detect early microvascular changes due to hypertension
