Interview with John Roger Stemen, June 26, 2001
John Roger Stemen was interviewed on June 26, 2001 by Michael J. Birkner about his experiences before he became a professor of History at Gettysburg College. He discusses his childhood in Indiana and focuses on his undergraduate education at Yale University and his service in the photolithography unit in Korea. After the war he attended Indiana University and Johns Hopkins University, where he obtained his doctorate.

18 Years of Experience in Knee Arthroscopy Under Local Anesthesia
Today, arthroscopies of the knee joint have become a routine procedure. Generally,
these operations are performed under general or spinal anesthesia. In Rheinfelden, local
anesthesia is our method of choice. We will summarize our experience with nearly 9000
arthroscopies in the last 18 years
Manganese oxide mineral phases produced at room temperature under acidic conditions investigated with XRD, TEM, SEM, EDS, and BET
This thesis concerns characterization of synthetic manganese oxides belonging to mineral phases known as Birnessite and Cryptomelane. Presented here are the results of an experiment designed to examine the influence of sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfate ions on the reduction of potassium permanganate under acidic conditions at room temperature to produce Birnessite and Cryptomelane. The experiments used KMnO4 as the source of Mn and the resulting Birnessite and Cryptomelane precipitates were washed with 18 Mn/cm NANOpure water at the end of syntheses. Several state-of-the-art solid state techniques were used to characterize the Mn-based oxide mineral phases. Based on the literature review, our prior research, and solid state characterization of the final products, some correlations between the reactions and the resulting mineral phases that were formed have been explored in the discussion section. Exceptional Sequences of Line Bundles and Spherical Twists - a Toric Example
Exceptional sequences of line bundles on a smooth projective toric surface
are automatically full when they can be constructed via augmentation. By using
spherical twists, we give examples that there are also exceptional sequences

Quenched large deviation principle for words in a letter sequence
When we cut an i.i.d. sequence of letters into words according to an
independent renewal process, we obtain an i.i.d. sequence of words. In the
\emph{annealed} large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical process of
words, the rate function is the specific relative entropy of the observed law
of words w.r.t. the reference law of words. In the present paper we consider
the \emph{quenched} LDP, i.e., we condition on a typical letter sequence. We
focus on the case where the renewal process has an \emph{algebraic} tail. The
rate function turns out to be a sum of two terms, one being the annealed rate
function, the other being proportional to the specific relative entropy of the
observed law of letters w.r.t. the reference law of letters, with the former
being obtained by concatenating the words and randomising the location of the
origin. The proportionality constant equals the tail exponent of the renewal
process. Earlier work by Birkner considered the case where the renewal process
has an exponential tail, in which case the rate function turns out to be the
first term on the set where the second term vanishes and to be infinite
elsewhere. In a companion paper the annealed and the quenched LDP are applied
to the collision local time of transient random walks, and the existence of an
intermediate phase for a class of interacting stochastic systems is

Terahertz radiation driven chiral edge currents in graphene
We observe photocurrents induced in single layer graphene samples by
illumination of the graphene edges with circularly polarized terahertz
radiation at normal incidence. The photocurrent flows along the sample edges
and forms a vortex. Its winding direction reverses by switching the light
helicity from left- to right-handed. We demonstrate that the photocurrent stems
from the sample edges, which reduce the spatial symmetry and result in an
asymmetric scattering of carriers driven by the radiation electric field. The
developed theory is in a good agreement with the experiment. We show that the
edge photocurrents can be applied for determination of the conductivity type
and the momentum scattering time of the charge carriers in the graphene edge

Envisioning sustainable tourism futures: An evaluation of the futures wheel method
Methods for researching the future have grown both in variety and rigour, offering new opportunities for understanding sustainable tourism. This paper discusses the value of futures research as a tool for envisioning and planning sustainable tourism futures but observes that there is greater potential for the use of futures methods in tourism. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the usefulness of a particular method known as the futures wheel as a sustainable planning tool for tourism decision makers and researchers. The futures wheel method is combined with a grounded theory approach to capture and distil the tacit knowledge of three 'expert' think tanks. The evaluation suggests that the futures wheel is a useful tool for researching sustainable tourism futures but that its potential may be enhanced if it can be combined with other futures research methods
Vibrational Spectra of a Mechanosensitive Channel
We report the simulated vibrational spectra of a mechanosensitive membrane channel in different gating states. Our results show that while linear absorption is insensitive to structural differences, linear dichroism and sum-frequency generation spectroscopies are sensitive to the orientation of the transmembrane helices, which is changing during the opening process. Linear dichroism cannot distinguish an intermediate structure from the closed structure, but sum-frequency generation can. In addition, we find that two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy can be used to distinguish all three investigated gating states of the mechanosensitive membrane channel.
