Foreign Firms, Domestic Wages
Many papers have documented a wage premium in foreign-owned and large firms. However, there is very little formal theory in the literature and empirical analyses are typically not based on hypotheses which are rigorously derived from theory. This paper contributes to the theory-empirics gap by developing a model that allows for two âpureâ explanations for the wage premium. The first is a heterogenous-worker explanation along the lines of Yeaple (2005), where firms that select more scaleintensive technologies select ex-ante more productive workers. In this case, the wage premium is a pure selection phenomenon. The second explanation builds on the heterogeneous-firm model of Melitz (2003) combined with on-the-job learning as in Markusen (2001). Productivity differences between firms are internalized by ex-ante homogeneous workers, so the wage premium is a pure learning phenomenon due to ex-post higher productivity in foreign firms. Our model yields a number of precise empirical hypotheses. When these predictions are tested on Danish matched employer-employee data, we find that both explanations play a role in explaining the observed wage premium. Specifically, the foreign- and large-firm premiums explained by selection are in the neighborhood of 30-65% of the total premium, with the remainder consistent with learning. There is also considerable support for a number of other predictions specific to the worker-learning explanation.
Foreign Firms, Domestic Wages
Foreign-owned firms are often hypothesized to generate productivity "spillovers" to the host country, but both theoretical micro-foundations and empirical evidence for this are limited. We develop a heterogeneous-firm model in which ex-ante identical workers learn from their employers in proportion to the firm?s productivity. Foreign-owned firms have, on average, higher productivity in equilibrium due to entry costs, which means that low-productivity foreign firms cannot enter. Foreign firms have higher wage growth and, with some exceptions, pay higher average wages, but not when compared to similarly large domestic firms. The empirical implications of the model are tested on matched employer-employee data from Denmark. Consistent with the theory, we find considerable evidence of higher wages and wage growth in large and/or foreign-owned firms. These effects survive controlling for individual characteristics, but, as expected, are reduced significantly when controlling for unobservable firm heterogeneity. Furthermore, acquired skills in foreign-owned and large firms appear to be transferable to both subsequent wage work and self-employment.
Image-Based Scene Representations for Head-Motion Parallax in 360° Panoramas
Creation and delivery of âRealVRâ experiences essentially consists of the following four main steps: capture, processing, representation and rendering. In this chapter, we present, compare, and discuss two recent end-to-end approaches, Parallax360 by Luo et al. [9] and MegaParallax by Bertel et al. [3]. Both propose complete pipelines for RealVR content generation and novel-view synthesis with head-motion parallax for 360° environments.Parallax360 uses a robotic arm for capturing thousands of input views on the surface of a sphere. Based on precomputed disparity motion fields and pairwise optical flow, novel viewpoints are synthesized on the fly using flow-based blending of the nearest two to three input views which provides compelling head-motion parallax.MegaParallax proposes a pipeline for RealVR content generation and rendering that emphasizes casual, hand-held capturing. The approach introduces view-dependent flow-based blending to enable novel-view synthesis with head-motion parallax within a viewing area determined by the field of view of the input cameras and the capturing radius.We describe both methods and discuss their similarities and differences in corresponding steps in the RealVR pipeline and show selected results. Model study of adsorbed metallic quantum dots: Na on Cu(111)
We model electronic properties of the second monolayer Na adatom islands
(quantum dots) on the Cu(111) surface covered homogeneously by the first Na
monolayer. An axially-symmetric three-dimensional jellium model, taking into
account the effects due to the first Na monolayer and the Cu substrate, has
been developed. The electronic structure is solved within the local-density
approximation of the density-functional theory using a real-space multigrid
method. The model enables the study of systems consisting of thousands of
Na-atoms. The results for the local density of states are compared with
differential conductance () spectra and constant current topographs from

Ground states of a one-dimensional lattice-gas model with an infinite range nonconvex interaction. A numerical study
We consider a lattice-gas model with an infinite range pairwise noncovex
interaction. It might be relevant, for example, for adsorption of alkaline
elements on W(112) and Mo(112). We study a competition between the effective
dipole-dipole and indirect interactions. The resulting ground state phase
diagrams are analysed (numerically) in detail. We have found that for some
model parameters the phase diagrams contain a region dominated by several
phases only with periods up to nine lattice constants. The remaining phase
diagrams reveal a complex structure of usually long periodic phases. We also

Theoretical analysis of the electronic structure of the stable and metastable c(2x2) phases of Na on Al(001): Comparison with angle-resolved ultra-violet photoemission spectra
Using Kohn-Sham wave functions and their energy levels obtained by
density-functional-theory total-energy calculations, the electronic structure
of the two c(2x2) phases of Na on Al(001) are analysed; namely, the metastable
hollow-site structure formed when adsorption takes place at low temperature,
and the stable substitutional structure appearing when the substrate is heated
thereafter above ca. 180K or when adsorption takes place at room temperature
from the beginning. The experimentally obtained two-dimensional band structures
of the surface states or resonances are well reproduced by the calculations.
With the help of charge density maps it is found that in both phases, two
pronounced bands appear as the result of a characteristic coupling between the
valence-state band of a free c(2x2)-Na monolayer and the
surface-state/resonance band of the Al surfaces; that is, the clean (001)
surface for the metastable phase and the unstable, reconstructed "vacancy"
structure for the stable phase. The higher-lying band, being Na-derived,
remains metallic for the unstable phase, whereas it lies completely above the
Fermi level for the stable phase, leading to the formation of a
surface-state/resonance band-structure resembling the bulk band-structure of an

Human Endogenous Retrovirus and Neuroinflammation in Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy.
Human endogenous retroviruses HERV-W encode a pro-inflammatory protein, named MSRV-Env from its original identification in Multiple Sclerosis. Though not detected in various neurological controls, MSRV-Env was found in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathies (CIDPs). This study investigated the expression of MSRV in CIDP and evaluated relevant MSRV-Env pathogenic effects.
50 CIDP patients, 19 other neurological controls (ONDs) and 65 healthy blood donors (HBDs) were recruited from two different countries. MSRV-env and -pol transcripts, IL6 and CXCL10 levels were quantified from blood samples. MSRV-Env immunohistology was performed in distal sensory nerves from CIDP and neurological controls biopsies. MSRV-Env pathogenic effects and mode of action were assayed in cultured primary human Schwann cells (HSCs).
In both cohorts, MSRV-env and -pol transcripts, IL6 positivity prevalence and CXCL10 levels were significantly elevated in CIDP patients when compared to HBDs and ONDs (statistically significant in all comparisons). MSRV-Env protein was detected in Schwann cells in 5/7 CIDP biopsies. HSC exposed to or transfected with MSRV-env presented a strong increase of IL6 and CXCL10 transcripts and protein secretion. These pathogenic effects on HSC were inhibited by GNbAC1, a highly specific and neutralizing humanized monoclonal antibody targeting MSRV-Env.
The present study showed that MSRV-Env may trigger the release of critical immune mediators proposed as instrumental factors involved in the pathophysiology of CIDP. Significant MSRV-Env expression was detected in a significant proportion of patients with CIDP, in which it may play a role according to its presently observed effects on Schwann cells along with previously known effects on immune cells. Experimental results also suggest that a biomarker-driven therapeutic strategy targeting this protein with a neutralizing antibody such as GNbAC1 may offer new perspectives for treating CIDP patients with positive detection of MSRV-Env expression.

Tuberculosis diagnosis cascade in Blantyre, Malawi : a prospective cohort study

International guidelines recommend systematic TB screening at health facilities, but implementation is challenging. We investigated completion of recommended TB screening steps in Blantyre, Malawi. Methods A prospective cohort recruited adult outpatients attending Bangwe primary clinic. Entry interviews were linked to exit interviews. The proportion of participants progressing through each step of the diagnostic pathway were estimated. Factors associated with request for sputum were investigated using multivariable logistic regression. Results Of 5442 clinic attendances 2397 (44%) had exit interviews. In clinically indicated participants (n =â445) 256 (57.5%) were asked about cough, 36 (8.1%) were asked for sputum, 21 (4.7%) gave sputum and 1 (0.2%) received same-day results. Significant associations with request for sputum were: any TB symptom (aOR:3.20, 95%CI:2.02â5.06), increasing age (aOR:1.02, 95%CI:1.01â1.04 per year) and for HIV-negative participants only, a history of previous TB (aOR:3.37, 95%CI:1.45â7.81). Numbers requiring sputum tests (26/day) outnumbered diagnostic capacity (8â12/day). Conclusions Patients were lost at every stage of the TB care cascade, with same day sputum submission following all steps of the diagnosis cascade achieved in only 4.7% if clinically indicated. Infection control strategies should be implemented, with reporting on early steps of the TB care cascade formalised. High-throughput screening interventions, such as digital CXR, that can achieve same-dayâTB diagnosis are urgently needed to meet WHO End TB goals.Peer reviewe
