Comment on ``Consistent Sets Yield Contrary Inferences in Quantum Theory''
In a recent paper Kent has pointed out that in consistent histories quantum
theory it is possible, given initial and final states, to construct two
different consistent families of histories, in each of which there is a
proposition that can be inferred with probability one, and such that the
projectors representing these two propositions are mutually orthogonal. In this
note we stress that, according to the rules of consistent history reasoning two
such propositions are not contrary in the usual logical sense namely, that one
can infer that if one is true then the other is false, and both could be false.
No single consistent family contains both propositions, together with the
initial and final states, and hence the propositions cannot be logically
compared. Consistent histories quantum theory is logically consistent,
consistent with experiment as far as is known, consistent with the usual
quantum predictions for measurements, and applicable to the most general
physical systems. It may not be the only theory with these properties, but in
our opinion, it is the most promising among present possibilities.Comment: 2pages, uses REVTEX 3.
Amplitudes Fitted to Experimental Data and to Roy's Equations
The scalar-isoscalar, scalar-isotensor and vector-isovector pi-pi amplitudes
are fitted simultaneously to experimental data and to Roy's equations. The
resulting amplitudes are compared with those fitted only to experimental data.
No additional constraints for the pi-pi threshold behaviour of the amplitudes
are imposed. Threshold parameters are calculated for the amplitudes in the
three waves. Spectrum of scalar mesons below 1.8 GeV is found from the analysis
of the analytical structure of the fitted amplitudes.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. Talk given at MESON 2004: 8th International

Experimental determination of dipole moments for molecular ions: Improved measurements for ArH^+
An improved value for the dipole moment of ArH^+ has been obtained from new measurements of the rotational g factors of ArH^+ and ArD^+ made with tunable far‐IR laser spectroscopy. Systematic errors present in earlier measurements have been eliminated. The new result (μ=3.0±0.6 D) is slightly higher than the ab initio value of Rosmus (2.2 D) at the 2σ limits of precision

Closed-form expressions for correlated density matrices: application to dispersive interactions and example of (He)2
Empirically correlated density matrices of N-electron systems are
investigated. Exact closed-form expressions are derived for the one- and
two-electron reduced density matrices from a general pairwise correlated wave
function. Approximate expressions are proposed which reflect dispersive
interactions between closed-shell centro-symmetric subsystems. Said expressions
clearly illustrate the consequences of second-order correlation effects on the
reduced density matrices. Application is made to a simple example: the (He)2
system. Reduced density matrices are explicitly calculated, correct to second
order in correlation, and compared with approximations of independent electrons
and independent electron pairs. The models proposed allow for variational
calculations of interaction energies and equilibrium distance as well as a
clear interpretation of dispersive effects on electron distributions. Both
exchange and second order correlation effects are shown to play a critical role
on the quality of the results.Comment: 22 page
Atemporal diagrams for quantum circuits
A system of diagrams is introduced that allows the representation of various
elements of a quantum circuit, including measurements, in a form which makes no
reference to time (hence ``atemporal''). It can be used to relate quantum
dynamical properties to those of entangled states (map-state duality), and
suggests useful analogies, such as the inverse of an entangled ket. Diagrams
clarify the role of channel kets, transition operators, dynamical operators
(matrices), and Kraus rank for noisy quantum channels. Positive (semidefinite)
operators are represented by diagrams with a symmetry that aids in
understanding their connection with completely positive maps. The diagrams are
used to analyze standard teleportation and dense coding, and for a careful
study of unambiguous (conclusive) teleportation. A simple diagrammatic argument
shows that a Kraus rank of 3 is impossible for a one-qubit channel modeled
using a one-qubit environment in a mixed state.Comment: Minor changes in references. Latex 32 pages, 13 figures in text using
