A Mw 7.7 subduction earthquake occurred on November 14, 2007 in Tocopilla (northern Chile). This region (between 16.5ºS and 23.5ºS) had been identified as major seismic gap (~1000 km length) since the South Peru (Mw= 9.1, 16 August 1868) and the Iquique (Mw=9.0, 10 May 1877) megathrust earthquakes. This gap was reduced to 500 km after the Arequipa (Mw = 8.3, 23 June 2001) and the Antofagasta (Mw = 8.1, 30 July 1995) earthquakes. We compute interferograms using Envisat ASAR images acquired before and after the Tocopilla earthquake to infer the location, geometry and slip of the rupture. Elastic modeling of this data allows us to infer that the 2007 main rupture extended over an area of ~150 x 60 km2, between 35 and 55 km depth, with a mean displacement of ~ 1.3 m. That means that the Tocopilla earthquake ruptured the deeper part of the seismogenic interface, probably within the transition zone. This earthquake released a little portion of the slip deficit accumulated in the seismic gap during the last 130 years (~ 10m). Hence the Tocopilla event may constitute a precursor of a future large thrust event in the current 500 km seismic gap that continues accumulating elastic strain from 1877.Un terremoto de subducción de Mw 7.7 tuvo lugar el 14 de Noviembre de 2007 en Tocopilla (norte de Chile).

Objectives: To identify clinical patterns of impairment affecting the cervical spine and masticatory systems in different subcategories of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) by an explorative data-driven approach. Methods: For this observational study, 144 subjects were subdivided according to Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs into: Healthy controls, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) signs without symptoms, TMJ affected, temporomandibular muscles affected, or TMJ and muscles affected. Factor analysis and linear regression were applied to cervical spine and masticatory data to identify and characterize clinical patterns in subgroups. Results: Factor analysis identified five clinical dimensions, which explained 59% of all variance: Mechanosensitivity, cervical movement, cervical and masticatory dysfunction, jaw movement, and upper cervical movement. Regression analysis identified different clinical dimensions in each TMD subgroup. Conclusion: Distinct clinical patterns of cervical spine and masticatory function were found among subgroups of TMD, which has clinical implications for therapeutic management

Corinth terraces re-visited: Improved paleoshoreline determination using Pleiades-DEMs

International audienceThe newest generation of satellites have greatly improved the capabilities of optical imagery over the last decade. Ground resolution has increased by one order of magnitude (to sub-metric pixel images), and improved sensors allow images to be located with an absolute accuracy of within a few meters. Better-resolved images facilitate refined tectonic studies of faults, basins, terraces, and other geomorphic features as it provides the opportunity to extract detailed topographic information. We have developed high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) in eight locations in Greece from tri-stereo satellite images acquired by the new Pleiades platform of CNES. With 0.5m resolution, these DEMs are state-of-the-art in comparison to previous DEMs made from satellite imagery. In this study we explore the potential of one of these DEMs, in the eastern Gulf of Corinth, for the analysis of a flight of marine terraces

The effect of season (rainy: RS, and dry: DS) and reproductive status on copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in blood serum of crossbred goats (BW= 36.01 ± 1.59 kg) were studied under semiarid rangeland conditions in Southern Mexico State. Blood samples from 80 crossbred goats were taken each season (RS and DS). The goats were clustered into 10 different groups considering their reproductive status. Concentrations of Cu and Zn in serum were assayed using atomic absorption. Data were analyzed using a general linear model procedure for a completely randomized design and differences among means were examined using a Tukey test. Blood serum concentrations of Cu and Zn were affected by reproductive status and season (P<0.001). In relation to the season, Cu and Zn serum levels were lower in RS than DS (P<0.05). Overall, kidded goats had the highest values (P<0.01) for Cu than other animals in both seasons (RS or DS). Anestrous goats had the lowest concentrations (P<0.01) for Zn during RS, while all goats at their second or more kidding, rearing single or twins, showed the highest concentrations of Zn (P<0.001) in this season. Adult goats in Southern Mexico State showed a deficiency of Cu and Zn, especially during RS. As such, mineral supplements should be provided with respect to these elements in feeding systems for goats under semiarid rangeland conditions in order to evaluate their impact on health and reproduction

AbstractIntroductionThe Ages and Stages questionnaires (ASQ) has been recently validated in our country for developmental screening. The objective of this study is evaluate the validity of ASQ to predict low cognitive performance in the early years of schooling.Patients and methodDiagnostic test studies conducted on a sample of children of medium-high socioeconomic level were evaluated using ASQ at least once at 8, 18 and/or 30 months old, and later, between 6 and 9 years old, reevaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-third edition (WISC-III). Each ASQ evaluation was recorded independently. WISC-III was standardized, considering underperformance when the total score were under -1 standard deviationResults123 children, corresponding to 174 ASQ assessments (42 of them were 8 months old, 55 were 18 months and 77 were 30 months of age) were included. An area under the ROC curve of 80.7% was obtained, showing higher values at 8 months (98.0%) compared to 18 and 30 months old (78.1 and 79.3%, respectively). Considering different ASQ scoring criteria, a low sensitivity (27.8 to 50.0%), but a high specificity (78.8 to 96.2%) were obtained; the positive predictive value ranged between 21 and 46%, while the negative value was 92.0-93.2%.ConclusionASQ has low sensitivity but excellent specificity to predict a low cognitive performance during the first years of schooling, being a good alternative to monitor psychomotor development in children who attend the private sector healthcare in our country
