The mircrobiological transformation of progesterone by a local isolate of Cunninghamella echiiiulata using a laboratory fermentor was studied. Progresterone (10-50 g/1) wetted by Tween 80 was added to 48-hour old culture and the transformation was left to proceed for 72 hours. Thereafter, the different transformation products were resolved chromatog-raphically. The identity of each product was established through the determination of m.p., mixed m.p., optical rotation and ultraviolet as well as infrared absorption spectra. A comparison of the R{ values of each product with that of the corresponding reference using different solvent systems as well as their colour expressed with two spray reagents, was used as a further proof for the identity of the isolated products. With all concentrations of progesterone tested, maximum yield of 17ot -hydroxyprogesterone was obtained after 48 hours of fermentation Progesterone concentrations of 10 and 20 g/1 were almost quantitatively converted to the different transformation products after 72 hours of fermentation. Using a concentration of 20 g/1 and incubation period of 48 hours, the transformation product mixture consisted of unchanged progesterone (6%), 17 o< -hydroxyprogesterone (54%),llotrhydroxyprogesterone (29%) and llo<;,17<^-dihydroxy-progesterone (2.5%).

Namungo is small-scale mining in Ruangwa district, Lindi Region, with deposits of green gemstone (tsavorite). About 400 men and women are living in temporary settlements. In August 2001, an STD/HIV/AIDS workplace intervention started which comprised of: A baseline KAP study with villagers and miners, A survey on infection rates with Syphilis and HIV, Treatment of patients with STD, An educational campaign and Development of plans for continuos collaboration between the mine and the health system. The KAP-study showed that 81% of respondents knew that sexual intercourse/sex without a condom is the main mode of HIV transmission. 80% correctly started that a person infected with HIV can remain a symptomatic for a long period. Half of them responded to had paid sex with more than one partner during the last 12 mouth. Those reporting having used a condom in the past 3 month were 48%. 92% of the respondents reported willingness for Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) to know their HIV status. From 429 people who had came with symptoms of STDs most were treated for discharge syndrome (40% males,24 females) and for genital ulcers (38% in males and females) Testing and counseling for syphilis and HIV was offered to STD clients and volunteers. Infection rates were high in both groups, STD patients and volunteers with 18% for syphilis and 17% for HIV. The highest prevalence with 38% was found in women 30-34 years of age. The high infection rates, risky behavior and a high mobility of the people involved are a challenge to claim holders, health authorities and communities in the vicinity. Regular interventions urgently needed

In the title compound, C19H16BrClO4, both the fused xanthene rings and one of the cyclohexane rings adopt envelope conformations, while the other cyclohexane ring is in a chair conformation. In the crystal, molecules are linked by C-H...O hydrogen bonds, forming infinite chains running along [10-1] incorporating R22(16) ring motifs. In addition, C-H...[pi] interactions and weak [pi]-[pi] stacking interactions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.768 (3) Å] help to consolidate the packing

Nonlinear dynamics of the interface of dielectric liquids in a strong electric field: Reduced equations of motion

The evolution of the interface between two ideal dielectric liquids in a strong vertical electric field is studied. It is found that a particular flow regime, for which the velocity potential and the electric field potential are linearly dependent functions, is possible if the ratio of the permittivities of liquids is inversely proportional to the ratio of their densities. The corresponding reduced equations for interface motion are derived. In the limit of small density ratio, these equations coincide with the well-known equations describing the Laplacian growth.Comment: 10 page

Visualisation is well known as an effective means of enriching user interaction with complex systems. Recent research with online communities has considered the application of visualisation tool support, with the intention of further improving communication between community members. This paper reviews existing work in this area with specific reference to the application of visualisation to improve user interaction within online forums such as bulletin boards. The paper then outlines work undertaken by the authors to develop a second-generation visualisation tool - 'BulB'

Preservation of human spermatozoa in a simple medium

AbstractThe objective of this study was to estimate the best conditions for sperm preservation in a simple medium and to examine the changes in sperm morphology and vitality due to preservation.Swim-up technique was carried out using KSOMaa medium (potassium simplex optimized medium with amino acid) then, such sperms were preserved without/with supplementation of BSA to the medium in two different osmolarities (271 and 800mOsmal). Sperms were preserved for 2weeks in three different temperatures (37°C, 4°C and −20°C). Our results demonstrated that: (1) KSOMaa medium is a good medium to obtain progressive motile sperms with a good morphology. (2) The best conditions for preserving human spermatozoa were 800mOsmol KSOM-BSA and a holding temperature of −20°C. (3) Light and electron microscopy showed that cryodamage has been induced in some human spermatozoa due to preservation. Collectively, our data indicate that this new simple procedure could be the method of choice for selecting motile and morphologically normal spermatozoa. This new preservation method may help in vitro fertilization centers but should be tested to check the embryonic development after intracytoplasmic sperm injection
