Pattern formation during diffusion limited transformations in solids
We develop a description of diffusion limited growth in solid-solid
transformations, which are strongly influenced by elastic effects. Density
differences and structural transformations provoke stresses at interfaces,
which affect the phase equilibrium conditions. We formulate equations for the
interface kinetics similar to dendritic growth and study the growth of a stable
phase from a metastable solid in both a channel geometry and in free space. We
perform sharp interface calculations based on Green's function methods and
phase field simulations, supplemented by analytical investigations. For pure
dilatational transformations we find a single growing finger with symmetry
breaking at higher driving forces, whereas for shear transformations the
emergence of twin structures can be favorable. We predict the steady state
shapes and propagation velocities, which can be higher than in conventional

Channeling 5-min photospheric oscillations into the solar outer atmosphere through small-scale vertical magnetic flux tubes
We report two-dimensional MHD simulations which demonstrate that photospheric
5-min oscillations can leak into the chromosphere inside small-scale vertical
magnetic flux tubes. The results of our numerical experiments are compatible
with those inferred from simultaneous spectropolarimetric observations of the
photosphere and chromosphere obtained with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter
(TIP) at 10830 A. We conclude that the efficiency of energy exchange by
radiation in the solar photosphere can lead to a significant reduction of the
cut-off frequency and may allow for the propagation of the 5 minutes waves
vertically into the chromosphere.Comment: accepted by ApJ
Counterion density profiles at charged flexible membranes
Counterion distributions at charged soft membranes are studied using
perturbative analytical and simulation methods in both weak coupling
(mean-field or Poisson-Boltzmann) and strong coupling limits. The softer the
membrane, the more smeared out the counterion density profile becomes and
counterions pentrate through the mean-membrane surface location, in agreement
with anomalous scattering results. Membrane-charge repulsion leads to a
short-scale roughening of the membrane.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Tablet for two: How do children collaborate around single player tablet games?
Tablet computers are increasingly used in school classrooms. However, despite the fact that these devices are conceived as
single-user devices, and most games or apps developed for them are designed for single-users, pairs or groups of students
usually use these devices. Surprisingly little research has been done to explore the ways in which these devices support or
not children’s collaboration – instead research has focused on larger tabletop computers, or on collaboration around
configurations of multiple tablet computers. In this paper we present a case-study analysis of pairs of children playing single
player tablet games together. We use a combination of temporal video analysis and the Collaborative Learning Mechanisms
(CLM) framework previously developed to understand collaboration around surfaces. This analysis aims to unpack
collaborative interactions around these devices and identify ways in which successful and less successful collaborations
occur. A comparison of our findings to previous studies of interactions around larger tabletop surfaces reveals some of the
ways interactions around tablets differ to these. We use these understandings to begin to outline some of the issues to take
into consideration when facilitating and designing for children’s collaboration around single tablet computer
Spin correlations in Ca3Co2O6: A polarised-neutron diffraction and Monte Carlo study
We present polarised-neutron diffraction measurements of the Ising-like
spin-chain compound Ca3Co2O6 above and below the magnetic ordering temperature
TN. Below TN, a clear evolution from a single-phase spin-density wave (SDW)
structure to a mixture of SDW and commensurate antiferromagnet (CAFM)
structures is observed on cooling. For a rapidly-cooled sample, the majority
phase at low temperature is the SDW, while if the cooling is performed
sufficiently slowly, then the SDW and the CAFM structure coexist between 1.5
and 10 K. Above TN, we use Monte Carlo methods to analyse the magnetic diffuse
scattering data. We show that both intra- and inter-chain correlations persist
above TN, but are essentially decoupled. Intra-chain correlations resemble the
ferromagnetic Ising model, while inter-chain correlations resemble the
frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. Using previously-published bulk
property measurements and our neutron diffraction data, we obtain values of the
ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and the single-ion

One-dimensional metallic behavior of the stripe phase in LaSrCuO
Using an exact diagonalization method within the dynamical mean-field theory
we study stripe phases in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We find a
crossover at doping from diagonal stripes to vertical
site-centered stripes with populated domain walls, stable in a broad range of
doping, . The calculated chemical potential shift and the doping dependence of the magnetic incommensurability are in
quantitative agreement with the experimental results for doped
LaSrCuO. The electronic structure shows one-dimensional
metallic behavior along the domain walls, and explains the suppression of
spectral weight along the Brillouin zone diagonal.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Lo-fi prototyping to design interactive-tabletop applications for children
Interactive tabletops are an exiting new platform for supporting children's collaboration. With design guidelines and standardized interaction principles still immature, there is a considerable need for iterative prototyping to define the task and interface. Lo-fi prototypes-using cardboard, paper, etc.- are easy to develop, flexible to adjust during design sessions, and intuitive for users to manipulate. Using them can be a valuable step in designing tabletop applications.
In this paper, we detail the design process of two tabletop applications, concentrating on the role of lo-fi prototyping. TransTime is a pattern game for 5-6 year olds to engage how time progresses. OurSpace is a design tool for 7-9 year olds to arrange desks and assign seats for students in their classroom. By comparing the experiences, we arrive at a better understanding of the benefits, challenges, and limits of using lo-fi prototypes to design interactive-tabletop applications for children
Import of community-associated, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus to Europe through skin and soft-tissue infection in intercontinental travellers, 2011-2016
Objectives: Recently, following import by travel and migration, epidemic community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has caused nosocomial outbreaks in Europe, sometimes with a fatal outcome. We describe clinico-epidemiological characteristics of CA-MRSA detected by the European Network for the Surveillance of imported S. aureus (www.staphtrav.eu) from May 2011 to November 2016. Methods: Sentinel surveillance at 13 travel clinics enrolling patients with travel-associated skin and soft-tissue infection (SSTI) and analysing lesion and nose swabs at one central laboratory. Results: A total of 564 independent case-patients with SSTI were enrolled and had 374 (67%) S. aureus-positive lesions, of which 14% (51/374) were MRSA. The majority of CA-MRSA isolates from SSTI were Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL)-positive (43/51, 84%).
