    Identification of tau leptons at the DZero experiment

    The article describes the identification of hadronically decaying tau leptons in ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV collected by the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. After a brief description of the motivations and the challenges of considering tau leptons in high energy hadronic collisions, details of the tau reconstruction and identification will be discussed. The challenges associated for tau energy measurements in an hadronic environment will be presented including approaches to deal with such measurements

    Usability evaluation successful factors (SFs) framework through entrepreneurship program at community college Malaysia: modified norminal group technique approach

    This paper discusses the success factors (SFs) of the entrepreneurship programme available in Malaysian community colleges. The benefit of the Modified Nominal Group Technique (NGT) approach carried out aims to achieve understanding of the usability test and evaluation of the SFs framework. The objective of this study is to identify the usability and evaluation of lecturers on the elements of entrepreneurship for four domain areas, strategy, environment, temporal and industry. The analysis covers the importance of SFs framework development, which determines the type of framework to use as reference in carrying out the entrepreneurship programme in Malaysian community colleges. In the usability test and evaluation process, 21 experts were chosen from three types of community college, from whom seven lecturers were allocated to each programme based on the understanding of the lecturers. Questionnaires were distributed to seek lecturer consensus. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 was used to analyse and find the percentage of consensus for each domain within the framework. This was to find the percentage of expert consensus against the SFs framework. The result of the analysis shows more than 75% acceptance and consensus for the functionality of SFs. Basically, this analysis is capable of providing reference and guidelines for the development of a SFs framework. Therefore, the analysis is able to provide information and reference for future researchers to explore the domain of entrepreneurship

    Measurements of heterotypic associations between cluster of differentiation CD74 and CD44 in human breast cancer-derived cells

    Interactions between pairs of membrane-bound receptors can enhance tumour development with implications for targeted therapies for cancer. Here we demonstrate clear heterotypic interaction between cluster of differentiation (CD) 74 and CD44, which might act in synergy and hence contribute to breast cancer progression. CD74, a type II transmembrane glycoprotein, is a chaperone for MHC class II biosynthesis and a receptor for the macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF). CD44 is the receptor for hyaluronic acid and is a type II transmembrane protein. Interactions between CD74, MIF and the intra-cytoplasmic domain of CD44 result in activation of ERK1/2, leading to increased cell proliferation and decreased apoptosis. The level of CD44 in the breast tumor cell lines CAMA-1, MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-435 and the immortalized normal luminal cell line 226LDM was higher than that of CD74. It was also observed that CD74 and CD44 exhibit significant variation in expression levels across the cells. CD74 and CD44 were observed to accumulate in cytoplasmic compartments, suggesting they associate with each other to facilitate tumour growth and metastasis. Use of a novel and validated colocalisation and image processing approach, coupled with co-immunoprecipitation, confirmed that CD74 and CD44 physically interact, suggesting a possible role in breast tumour growth. This is the first time that CD74 and CD44 colocalization has been quantified in breast cancer cells using a non-invasive validated bioimaging procedure. Measuring the co-expression levels of CD74 and CD44 could potentially be used as a 'biomarker signature' to monitor different stages of breast cancer

    Nonstationary heat conduction in one-dimensional models with substrate potential

    The paper investigates non-stationary heat conduction in one-dimensional models with substrate potential. In order to establish universal characteristic properties of the process, we explore three different models --- Frenkel-Kontorova (FK), phi4+ (ϕ4\phi^4+) and phi4- (ϕ4\phi^4-). Direct numeric simulations reveal in all these models a crossover from oscillatory decay of short-wave perturbations of the temperature field to smooth diffusive decay of the long-wave perturbations. Such behavior is inconsistent with parabolic Fourier equation of the heat conduction and clearly demonstrates the necessity of hyperbolic models. The crossover wavelength decreases with increase of average temperature. The decay patterns of the temperature field almost do not depend on the amplitude of the perturbations, so the use of linear evolution equations for temperature field is justified. In all model investigated, the relaxation of thermal perturbations is exponential -- contrary to linear chain, where it follows a power law. However, the most popular lowest-order hyperbolic generalization of the Fourier law, known as Cattaneo-Vernotte (CV) or telegraph equation (TE) is not valid for description of the observed behavior of the models with on-site potential. In part of the models a characteristic relaxation times exhibit peculiar scaling with respect to the temperature perturbation wavelength. Quite surprisingly, such behavior is similar to that of well-known model with divergent heat conduction (Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain) and rather different from the model with normal heat conduction (chain of rotators). Thus, the data on the non-stationary heat conduction in the systems with on-site potential do not fit commonly accepted concept of universality classes for heat conduction in one-dimensional models.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, corrected versio

    Conceptual Framework for Designing and Developing a Creativity Enhancement Module in Education Incorporating Indigenous Perspectives

    Creativity is rated among the most important human mental attributes or human capital that is considered by researchers as the driving force behind economic development, technical advances, work-place leadership and life success. As such, creativity is certainly an important aspect of technical and vocational education and training, in which design and innovation are among the core subjects. As the perspective that enhancement of creativity can be carried out through learning and training is accepted, the design and development of instructional modules plays a significant role in enhancing the creativity levels of both trainers and trainees, especially in the field of education. Teaching and learning resources in varying degrees of depth and difficulty that cater for the individual, groups and organizations can be prepared. This article sets forth a conceptual framework for a structure for a creativity enhancement module that includes its design, development and evaluation. Keys areas in the framework include theories of creativity and domains that are involved, theories of teaching and learning creativity, indigenous perspectives and theories of module design, development and evaluation of the module in the intervention process
