    Eliminating Biases in Evaluating Mutual Fund Performance from a Survivorship Free Sample

    Poor performing mutual funds are less likely to be observed in the data sets that are typically available. This so-called survivor problem can induce a substantial bias in measures of the performance of the funds and the persistence of this performance. Many studies have recently argued that survivorship bias can be avoided by analyzing a sample that contains returns on each fund up to the period of disappearance using standard techniques. Such data sets are usually referred to as 'survivorship free'. In this paper we show that the use of standard methods of analysis on a 'survivorship free' data-set typically still suffers from a bias and we show how one can easily correct for this using weights based on probit regressions. Using a sample with quarterly returns on U.S. based equity funds, we first of all model how survival probabilities depend upon historical returns, the age of the fund and upon aggregate economy-wide shocks. Subsequently we employ a Monte Carlo study to analyze the size and shape of the survivorship bias in various performance measures that arise when a 'survivorship free database' is used with standard techniques. In particular, we show that survivorship bias induces a spurious U-shape pattern in performance persistence. Finally, we show how a weighting procedure based upon probit regressions can be used to correct for the bias. In this way, we obtain bias-corrected estimates of abnormal performance relative to a one-factor and the Carhart [1997] four-factor model, as well as its persistence. Our results are in accordance with the persistence pattern found by Carhart [1997], and do not support the existence of a hot hand phenomenon in mutual fund performance.

    Solvates, salts, and cocrystals : a proposal for a feasible classification system

    The design of pharmaceutical cocrystals has initiated widespread debate on the classification of cocrystals. Current attempts to classify multicomponent crystals suffer from ambiguity, which has led to inconsistent definitions for cocrystals and for multicomponent crystals in general. Inspired by the work of Aitipamula et al. (Cryst. Growth Des. 2012, 12, 2147-2152), we present a feasible classification system for all multicomponent crystals. The present classification enables us to analyze and classify multicomponent crystal structures present in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). This reveals that all seven classes proposed are relevant in terms of frequency of occurrence. Lists of CSD refcodes for all classes are provided. We identified over 5000 cocrystals in the CSD, as well as over 12 000 crystals with more than two components. This illustrates that the possibilities for alternative drug formulations can be increased significantly by considering more than two components in drug design

    Neural processing of basic tastes in healthy young and older adults - an fMRI study

    AbstractAgeing affects taste perception as shown in psychophysical studies, however, underlying structural and functional mechanisms of these changes are still largely unknown. To investigate the neurobiology of age-related differences associated with processing of basic tastes, we measured brain activation (i.e. fMRI-BOLD activity) during tasting of four increasing concentrations of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter tastes in young (average 23years of age) and older (average 65years of age) adults. The current study highlighted age-related differences in taste perception at the different higher order brain areas of the taste pathway. We found that the taste information delivered to the brain in young and older adults was not different, as illustrated by the absence of age effects in NTS and VPM activity. Our results indicate that multisensory integration changes with age; older adults showed less brain activation to integrate both taste and somatosensory information. Furthermore, older adults directed less attention to the taste stimulus; therefore attention had to be reallocated by the older individuals in order to perceive the tastes. In addition, we considered that the observed age-related differences in brain activation between taste concentrations in the amygdala reflect its involvement in processing both concentration and pleasantness of taste. Finally, we state the importance of homeostatic mechanisms in understanding the taste quality specificity in age related differences in taste perception

    Scaling up temperature cycling-induced deracemization by suppressing nonstereoselective processes

    The scale-up of Temperature Cycling-Induced Deracemization (TCID) of sodium bromate is feasible provided that two nonstereoselective processes are suppressed. Both nonstereoselective processes occur as a result of insufficient crystal breakage or attrition. In the absence of crystal breakage or attrition during the temperature cycles, large crystals emerge and the resulting small total crystal surface area is unable to sufficiently consume the supersaturation during cooling, resulting in nonstereoselective nucleation. This nonstereoselective process can be avoided by applying small temperature cycles involving small dissolving solid fractions. However, this leads to a slow deracemization rate. In addition, crystals undergo nonstereoselective agglomeration, which leads to the formation of large racemic agglomerates constructed of both chiral forms. To counteract their formation, secondary nucleation through crystal breakage was found to be a key requirement. At a large scale, a homogenizer was used to induce crystal breakage which, in combination with temperature cycles, led to the removal of racemic agglomerates as well as a significant increase in the deracemization rate. Overusing the homogenizer, however, caused the enantiomeric excess increase to stop. Our experiments show the importance of secondary nucleation in TCID of sodium bromate. However, secondary nucleation is currently not incorporated in the TCID process models. In the presence of a large amount of crystals which facilitates a sufficiently large crystal surface area at the highest temperature and careful use of the homogenizer, TCID leads to complete deracemization in volumes up to 1 L, demonstrating the potential to extend TCID to industrial applications

    Dyskinesia Impairment Scale scores in Dutch pre-school children after neonatal therapeutic hypothermia

    BACKGROUND: Neonatal therapeutic hypothermia (TH) can ameliorate or prevent the development of dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP) after hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The Dyskinesia Impairment Scale (DIS) was recently launched to quantify dyskinetic (dystonic and choreatic) motor features in patients with CP. In TH treated children, who are at risk of developing dyskinetic CP, we aimed to determine DIS-scores at pre-school age. METHOD: In 21 Dutch pre-school children (3-6 years of age) who had received TH according to the Dutch-Flemish treatment protocol, we determined DIS-scores. We associated DIS-scores with 1. age-matched control values (Kuiper et al., 2018) [1], and 2. previously reported DIS-score range in dyskinetic CP (Monbaliu E et al., 2015). RESULTS: The motor phenotype was determined as: normal (n = 18/21), mildly impaired (reduced coordination (n = 2/21)) and abnormal (dyskinetic CP; n = 1/21). In absence of CP (n = 20/21), DIS-scores were lower (more favorable) than in dyskinetic CP, without any overlapping group scores (mean difference: 71 points; p < .05). However, the obtained DIS-scores were still higher than previously reported in healthy age-matched controls (mean difference: 14 points; p < .05). There was an association between DIS-scores and retrospective neonatal MRI (basal ganglia and thalamus injury on diffusion weighted imaging (DWI)) and (a)EEG parameters (p < .05). CONCLUSION: In the vast majority (95%) of Dutch TH-HIE treated pre-school children, the phenotypic motor outcome was favorable. However, DIS-scores were moderately increased compared with healthy age-matched controls. Future studies may elucidate the significance of moderately increased DIS-scores should to further extent

    Dealing with consumer differences in liking during repeated exposure to food; typical dynamics in rating behavior

    Consumers show high interindividual variability in food liking during repeated exposure. To investigate consumer liking during repeated exposure, data is often interpreted on a product level by averaging results over all consumers. However, a single product may elicit inconsistent behaviors in consumers; averaging will mix and hide possible subgroups of consumer behaviors, leading to a misinterpretation of the results. To deal with the variability in consumer liking, we propose to use clustering on data from consumer-product combinations to investigate the nature of the behavioral differences within the complete dataset. The resulting behavioral clusters can then be used to describe product acceptance. To test this approach we used two independent data sets in which young adults were repeatedly exposed to drinks and snacks, respectively. We found that five typical consumer behaviors existed in both datasets. These behaviors differed both in the average level of liking as well as its temporal dynamics. By investigating the distribution of a single product across typical consumer behaviors, we provide more precise insight in how consumers divide in subgroups based on their product liking (i.e. product modality). This work shows that taking into account and using interindividual differences can unveil information about product acceptance that would otherwise be ignored

    Cohort profile of Acutelines:a large data/biobank of acute and emergency medicine

    Purpose Research in acute care faces many challenges, including enrolment challenges, legal limitations in data sharing, limited funding and lack of singular ownership of the domain of acute care. To overcome these challenges, the Center of Acute Care of the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands, has established a de novo data, image and biobank named ‘Acutelines’.Participants Clinical data, imaging data and biomaterials (ie, blood, urine, faeces, hair) are collected from patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with a broad range of acute disease presentations. A deferred consent procedure (by proxy) is in place to allow collecting data and biomaterials prior to obtaining written consent. The digital infrastructure used ensures automated capturing of all bed-side monitoring data (ie, vital parameters, electrophysiological waveforms) and securely importing data from other sources, such as the electronic health records of the hospital, ambulance and general practitioner, municipal registration and pharmacy. Data are collected from all included participants during the first 72 hours of their hospitalisation, while follow-up data are collected at 3 months, 1 year, 2 years and 5 years after their ED visit.Findings to date Enrolment of the first participant occurred on 1 September 2020. During the first month, 653 participants were screened for eligibility, of which 180 were approached as potential participants. In total, 151 (84%) provided consent for participation of which 89 participants fulfilled criteria for collection of biomaterials.Future plans The main aim of Acutelines is to facilitate research in acute medicine by providing the framework for novel studies and issuing data, images and biomaterials for future research. The protocol will be extended by connecting with central registries to obtain long-term follow-up data, for which we already request permission from the participant.Trial registration number NCT04615065

    Asymptomatic lipofibroadenoma in a 17-year-old male:a case report and literature review of a rare entity

    Background: The most common thymic tumours, thymomas, are derived from thymic epithelium and are generally low-grade neoplasm. Frankly malignant tumours, thymic carcinomas are rarer still. Exceedingly rare thymic tumours contain a mesenchymal tissue component such as fibrous connective tissue and/or mature fat. Lipofibroadenoma (LFA) is a very rare mixed epithelial-mesenchymal thymic tumour, included in the category of thymic epithelial tumors. LFA in addition to a mature adipocytic component, contains variable epithelial and mesenchymal tissue components. Owing to the presence of an epithelial component in LFA, this entity, in contrast to thymolipoma, is included in the World Health Organization (WHO) category of thymic epithelial neoplasm. Currently only 12 LFA cases have been described. The 12 previously reported cases all behaved in a benign fashion, although four cases were associated with a conventional type of thymoma. We here present a new, 13th, case of LFA. Case Description: The LFA was discovered incidentally in a previously healthy 17-year-old male after investigations for suspected pneumonia. On imaging a mass was discovered in the anterior mediastinum which was subsequently surgically removed. The resected tumour was extensively investigated, including the first instance of full molecular analysis of this rare entity and all available literature on LFA was sourced to provide a comprehensive overview. The histology of this LFA was similar to previously described cases. No gene mutations or rearrangements were identified. The patient made an uneventful recovery and after 13 months of follow-up remained well. Conclusions: An additional, 13th case of LFA is presented. Based on the available literature it appears that LFA may be considered a benign composite thymic tumour, although the combination of an additional conventional thymoma component may warrant closer follow-up.</p
