    Expertise reduces neural cost but does not modulate repetition suppression

    The extent to which repetition suppression is modulated by expertise is currently unknown. We used event-related fMRI to test whether architecture students would respond faster to buildings and would exhibit stronger repetition suppression in the fusiform gyrus (FG) and parahippocampa cortex (PHC) than students from other disciplines. Behaviorally, we found shorter response latencies with target repetition in all subjects. Moreover, the repetition of targets and distracters was associated with decreased neural responses in the FG and PHC in all subjects. In control, but not in architecture students, reaction times during the first repetition of the target were correlated with activation in the cuneus, lingual gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, insula, and anterior cingulate cortex, indicating that the non-experts had to recruit additional regions in order to perform the task. Our findings suggest that due to their expertise, architects were able to encode and detect building stimuli at a lower neural cost

    Mutation of ornithine transcarbamylase (H136R) in a girl with severe intermittent orotic aciduria but normal enzyme activity

    Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency shows X-linked inheritance with partial dominant expression in carrier females. We studied a girl with intermittent severe orotic aciduria and mild hyperammonaemia despite apparently normal enzyme activity in the liver. Sequence analysis of all 10 exons of the ornithine transcarbamylase gene revealed a novel a → G exchange (A502G) in exon 5 which changes His-136 to arginine in the ornithine transcarbamylase protein. Km values for carbamyl phosphate and ornithine determined in the patient's liver were comparable to those of wild-type enzyme but, unlike the wild-type enzyme, the mutant enzyme was unstable upon freezing and thawing. Electron microscopy revealed several giant mitochondria with paracrystalline inclusions. The results are compatible with the assumption that the mutant enzyme cannot form a functional complex with carbamyl phosphate synthetase and the ornithine carrier, resulting in decreased availability of substrates and diminished enzyme activity in viv

    Playing Ping Pong with Light: Directional Emission of White Light

    Over the last decades, light-emitting diodes (LED) have replaced common light bulbs in almost every application, from flashlights in smartphones to automotive headlights. Illuminating nightly streets requires LEDs to emit a light spectrum that is perceived as pure white by the human eye. The power associated with such a white light spectrum is not only distributed over the contributing wavelengths but also over the angles of vision. For many applications, the usable light rays are required to exit the LED in forward direction, namely under small angles to the perpendicular. In this work, we demonstrate that a specifically designed multi-layer thin film on top of a white LED increases the power of pure white light emitted in forward direction. Therefore, the deduced multi-objective optimization problem is reformulated via a real-valued physics-guided objective function that represents the hierarchical structure of our engineering problem. Variants of Bayesian optimization are employed to maximize this non-deterministic objective function based on ray tracing simulations. Eventually, the investigation of optical properties of suitable multi-layer thin films allowed to identify the mechanism behind the increased directionality of white light: angle and wavelength selective filtering causes the multi-layer thin film to play ping pong with rays of light

    Uncomplicated obesity is associated with abnormal aortic function assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance

    AIMS: Obese subjects with insulin resistance and hypertension have abnormal aortic elastic function, which may predispose them to the development of left ventricular dysfunction. We hypothesised that obesity, uncomplicated by other cardiovascular risk factors, is independently associated with aortic function. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used magnetic resonance imaging to measure aortic compliance, distensibility and stiffness index in 27 obese subjects (BMI 33 kg/m2) without insulin resistance and with normal cholesterol and blood pressure, and 12 controls (BMI 23 kg/m2). Obesity was associated with reduced aortic compliance (0.9 +/- 0.1 vs. 1.5 +/- 0.2 mm2/mmHg in controls, p < 0.02) and distensibility (3.3 +/- 0.01 vs. 5.6 +/- 0.01 mmHg-1 x 10-3, p < 0.02), as well as higher stiffness index (3.4 +/- 0.3 vs. 2.1 +/- 0.1, p < 0.02). Body mass index and fat mass were negatively correlated with aortic function. Leptin was higher in obesity (8.9 +/- 0.6 vs. 4.7 +/- 0.6 ng/ml, p < 0.001) and also correlated with aortic measures. In multiple regression models, fat mass, leptin and body mass index were independent predictors of aortic function. CONCLUSION: Aortic elastic function is abnormal in obese subjects without other cardiovascular risk factors. These findings highlight the independent importance of obesity in the development of cardiovascular disease

    Behavior of osteoblastic cells cultured on titanium and structured zirconia surfaces

    Background Osseointegration is crucial for the long-term success of dental implants and depends on the tissue reaction at the tissue-implant interface. Mechanical properties and biocompatibility make zirconia a suitable material for dental implants, although surface processings are still problematic. The aim of the present study was to compare osteoblast behavior on structured zirconia and titanium surfaces under standardized conditions. Methods The surface characteristics were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In primary bovine osteoblasts attachment kinetics, proliferation rate and synthesis of bone-associated proteins were tested on different surfaces. Results The results demonstrated that the proliferation rate of cells was significantly higher on zirconia surfaces than on titanium surfaces (p < 0.05; Student's t-test). In contrast, attachment and adhesion strength of the primary cells was significant higher on titanium surfaces (p < 0.05; U test). No significant differences were found in the synthesis of bone-specific proteins. Ultrastructural analysis revealed phenotypic features of osteoblast-like cells on both zirconia and titanium surfaces. Conclusion The study demonstrates distinct effects of the surface composition on osteoblasts in culture. Zirconia improves cell proliferation significantly during the first days of culture, but it does not improve attachment and adhesion strength. Both materials do not differ with respect to protein synthesis or ultrastructural appearance of osteoblasts. Zirconium oxide may therefore be a suitable material for dental implants

    Lepton beam polarization at LEP

    Results from studies on transverse polarization in LEP over the past two years are presented. A single beam transverse polarization level of 57% at 45 GeV was reached adopting strategies to compensate depolarizing effcts originating in the four experimental solenoids and from orbit pertubations. Beam Energy Calibration was performed by Resonant Depolarization during the 1993 LEP Run for Physics at three different energies centered around the Z peak. The uncertainty on the beam energy was reduced to about 1 MeV, thus improving the accuracy on the Z-resonance mass and width with respect to previous results. Successful results obtained at the end of the 1994 LEP Run on polarization with colliding beams are reported and future plans outlined

    Weak Localization Effect in Superconductors by Radiation Damage

    Large reductions of the superconducting transition temperature TcT_{c} and the accompanying loss of the thermal electrical resistivity (electron-phonon interaction) due to radiation damage have been observed for several A15 compounds, Chevrel phase and Ternary superconductors, and NbSe2\rm{NbSe_{2}} in the high fluence regime. We examine these behaviors based on the recent theory of weak localization effect in superconductors. We find a good fitting to the experimental data. In particular, weak localization correction to the phonon-mediated interaction is derived from the density correlation function. It is shown that weak localization has a strong influence on both the phonon-mediated interaction and the electron-phonon interaction, which leads to the universal correlation of TcT_{c} and resistance ratio.Comment: 16 pages plus 3 figures, revtex, 76 references, For more information, Plesse see http://www.fen.bilkent.edu.tr/~yjki
