Creation of long-term coherent optical memory via controlled nonlinear interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates
A Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an optical dipole trap is used to
generate long-term coherent memory for light, and storage times of more than
one second are observed. Phase coherence of the condensate as well as
controlled manipulations of elastic and inelastic atomic scattering processes
are utilized to increase the storage fidelity by several orders of magnitude
over previous schemes. The results have important applications for creation of
long-distance quantum networks and for generation of entangled states of light
and matter.Comment: published version of the pape
Downsizing of supermassive black holes from the SDSS quasar survey (II). Extension to z~4
Starting from the quasar sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for
which the CIV line is observed, we use an analysis scheme to derive the
z-dependence of the maximum mass of active black holes, which overcomes the
problems related to the Malmquist bias. The same procedure is applied to the
low redshift sample of SDSS quasars for which Hbeta measurements are available.
Combining with the results from the previously studied MgII sample, we find
that the maximum mass of the quasar population increases as (1+z)^(1.64+/-0.04)
in the redshift range 0.1<z<4, which includes the epoch of maximum quasar
activity.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. To appear in MNRA
Composition of volatile compounds in bovine milk heat treated by instant infusion pasteurization and correlation to sensory analysis
Volatile compounds in skim milk and nonstandardised milk subjected to instant infusion pasteurisation at 80°C, 100°C and 120°C were compared with raw milk, high temperature short time pasteurised milk and milk pasteurised at 85°C/30 s. The composition of volatile compounds differed between infusion pasteurisation treated samples and the reference pasteurisations. The sensory properties of skim milk subjected to instant infusion pasteurisation were described by negative attributes, such as cardboard sour and plastic flavours, which are not associated normally with fresh milk. Partial least squares modelling showed good correlation between the volatile compounds and the sensory properties, indicating the predictive and possible causal importance of the volatile compounds for the sensory characteristics
A High Flux Source of Cold Rubidium
We report the production of a continuous, slow, and cold beam of 87-Rb atoms
with an unprecedented flux of 3.2 x 10^12 atoms/s and a temperature of a few
milliKelvin. Hot atoms are emitted from a Rb candlestick atomic beam source and
transversely cooled and collimated by a 20 cm long atomic collimator section,
augmenting overall beam flux by a factor of 50. The atomic beam is then
decelerated and longitudinally cooled by Zeeman slowing
The optical spectrum of PKS 1222+216 and its black hole mass
We investigate the optical spectral properties of the blazar PKS 1222+216
during a period of 3 years. While the continuum is highly variable the broad
line emission is practically constant. This supports a scenario in which the
broad line region is not affected by jet continuum variations. We thus infer
the thermal component of the continuum from the line luminosity and we show
that it is comparable with the continuum level observed during the phases of
minimum optical activity. The mass of the black hole is estimated through the
virial method from the FWHM of MgII, Hbeta, and Halpha broad lines and from the
thermal continuum luminosity. This yields a consistent black hole mass value of
6x10^8 solar masses.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Reverberation Mapping Results from MDM Observatory
We present results from a multi-month reverberation mapping campaign
undertaken primarily at MDM Observatory with supporting observations from
around the world. We measure broad line region (BLR) radii and black hole
masses for six objects. A velocity-resolved analysis of the H_beta response
shows the presence of diverse kinematic signatures in the BLR.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the IAU Symposium No. 267:

Dust-free quasars in the early Universe
The most distant quasars known, at redshifts z=6, generally have properties
indistinguishable from those of lower-redshift quasars in the rest-frame
ultraviolet/optical and X-ray bands. This puzzling result suggests that these
distant quasars are evolved objects even though the Universe was only seven per
cent of its current age at these redshifts. Recently one z=6 quasar was shown
not to have any detectable emission from hot dust, but it was unclear whether
that indicated different hot-dust properties at high redshift or if it is
simply an outlier. Here we report the discovery of a second quasar without
hot-dust emission in a sample of 21 z=6 quasars. Such apparently hot-dust-free
quasars have no counterparts at low redshift. Moreover, we demonstrate that the
hot-dust abundance in the 21 quasars builds up in tandem with the growth of the
central black hole, whereas at low redshift it is almost independent of the
black hole mass. Thus z=6 quasars are indeed at an early evolutionary stage,
with rapid mass accretion and dust formation. The two hot-dust-free quasars are
likely to be first-generation quasars born in dust-free environments and are
too young to have formed a detectable amount of hot dust around them.Comment: To be published in Nature on the 18 March 2010
Phonon-mediated spin-spin interactions between trapped Rydberg atoms
We theoretically investigate the possibility of creating phonon-mediated
spin-spin interactions between neutral atoms trapped in optical tweezers. By
laser coupling the atoms to Rydberg states, collective modes of motion appear.
We show that these can be used to mediate effective spin-spin interactions or
quantum logic gates between the atoms in analogy to schemes employed in trapped
ions. In particular, we employ Rydberg dressing in a novel scheme to induce the
needed interaction, and we show that it is possible to replicate the working of
the M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen entanglement scheme. The M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gate
is widely used in emerging quantum computers using trapped ion qubits and
currently features some of the highest fidelities of any quantum gate under
consideration. We find arbitrarily high fidelity for the coherent time
evolution of the two-atom state even at non-zero temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Observational Limits on Type 1 AGN Accretion Rate in COSMOS
We present black hole masses and accretion rates for 182 Type 1 AGN in
COSMOS. We estimate masses using the scaling relations for the broad Hb, MgII,
and CIV emission lines in the redshift ranges 0.16<z<0.88, 1<z<2.4, and
2.7<z<4.9. We estimate the accretion rate using an Eddington ratio L_I/L_Edd
estimated from optical and X-ray data. We find that very few Type 1 AGN accrete
below L_I/L_Edd ~ 0.01, despite simulations of synthetic spectra which show
that the survey is sensitive to such Type 1 AGN. At lower accretion rates the
BLR may become obscured, diluted or nonexistent. We find evidence that Type 1
AGN at higher accretion rates have higher optical luminosities, as more of
their emission comes from the cool (optical) accretion disk with respect to
shorter wavelengths. We measure a larger range in accretion rate than previous
works, suggesting that COSMOS is more efficient at finding low accretion rate
Type 1 AGN. However the measured range in accretion rate is still comparable to
the intrinsic scatter from the scaling relations, suggesting that Type 1 AGN
accrete at a narrow range of Eddington ratio, with L_I/L_Edd ~ 0.1.Comment: Accepted for pulication in ApJ. 7 pages, 5 figures, table 1 available
