The Role of the Employer in Supporting Work Participation of Workers with Disabilities:A Systematic Literature Review Using an Interdisciplinary Approach
Purpose There is growing awareness that the employer plays an important role in preventing early labor market exit of workers with poor health. This systematic review aims to explore the employer characteristics associated with work participation of workers with disabilities. An interdisciplinary approach was used to capture relevant characteristics at all organizational levels. Methods To identify relevant longitudinal observational studies, a systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO and EconLit. Three key concepts were central to the search: (a) employer characteristics, (b) work participation, including continued employment, return to work and long-term work disability, and (c) chronic diseases. Results The search strategy resulted in 4456 articles. In total 50 articles met the inclusion criteria. We found 14 determinants clustered in four domains: work accommodations, social support, organizational culture and company characteristics. On supervisor level, strong evidence was found for an association between work accommodations and continued employment and return to work. Moderate evidence was found for an association between social support and return to work. On higher organizational level, weak evidence was found for an association between organizational culture and return to work. Inconsistent evidence was found for an association between company characteristics and the three work outcomes. Conclusions Our review indicates the importance of different employer efforts for work participation of workers with disabilities. Workplace programs aimed at facilitating work accommodations and supervisor support can contribute to the prevention of early labor market exit of workers with poor health. Further research is needed on the influence of organizational culture and company characteristics on work participation
Large atom number Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium
We describe the setup to create a large Bose-Einstein condensate containing
more than 120x10^6 atoms. In the experiment a thermal beam is slowed by a
Zeeman slower and captured in a dark-spot magneto-optical trap (MOT). A typical
dark-spot MOT in our experiments contains 2.0x10^10 atoms with a temperature of
320 microK and a density of about 1.0x10^11 atoms/cm^3. The sample is spin
polarized in a high magnetic field, before the atoms are loaded in the magnetic
trap. Spin polarizing in a high magnetic field results in an increase in the
transfer efficiency by a factor of 2 compared to experiments without spin
polarizing. In the magnetic trap the cloud is cooled to degeneracy in 50 s by
evaporative cooling. To suppress the 3-body losses at the end of the
evaporation the magnetic trap is decompressed in the axial direction.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Review Of Scientific Instrument
Comparison of analog and digital preoperative planning in total hip and knee arthroplasties - A prospective study of 173 hips and 65 total knees
Introduction Digital correction of the magnification factor is expected to yield more accurate and reliable preoperative plans. We hypothesized that digital templating would be more accurate than manual templating for total hip and knee arthroplasties. Patients and methods Firstly, we established the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of the templating procedure. The accuracy and reliability of digital and analog plans were measured in a series of 238 interventions, which were all planned using both techniques. Results Interobserver reliability was good for the planning of knee arthroplasties (kappa-values 0.63-0.75), but not more than moderate for the planning of hip arthroplasties (kappa-values 0.22-0.54). Analog plans of knee arthroplasties systematically underestimated the component sizes (1.1 size on average), while the digital procedure proved to be accurate (0.1-0.4 size too small on average). The following figures show percentage of cases receiving a correct implant, allowing an error of one size. Digital templating of the hip arthroplasty was less frequently correct (cemented cup and stem: 72% and 79%; uncemented cup and stem: 52% and 66%) than analog planning (cemented cup and stem: 73% and 89%; uncemented cup and stem: 64% and 52%). Interpretation Planning of component sizes for total knee arthroplasties is an accurate procedure when performed digitally. Our digital preoperative plans which were performed by someone other than the surgeon were less accurate than the analog plans prepared by the surgeon
Adverse effects of personalized automated feedback
In large classes with hundreds of students, it is rarely feasible to provide students with individual feedback on their performance. Automatically generated personalized feedback on students' performance might help to overcome this issue, but available empirical effect studies are inconclusive due to lack of methodological rigor. This study uses a repetitive randomized control experiment to explore whether automatically generated feedback is effective and for which students. Our results indicate that feedback does not have a positive effect on performance for all students. Some groups benefit from receiving personalized feedback, while others do not perform better than the control group. Students that perform average benefit most from receiving personalized feedback. However, lower-scoring students who received feedback tend to have lower attrition rates and if they participate at the final exam, their performance is not higher than the control group. Therefore, providing automated feedback is not something that should be undertaken mindlessly.</p
Observation of shock waves in a large Bose-Einstein condensate
We observe the formation of shock waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate
containing a large number of sodium atoms. The shock wave is initiated with a
repulsive, blue-detuned light barrier, intersecting the BEC, after which two
shock fronts appear. We observe breaking of these waves when the size of these
waves approaches the healing length of the condensate. At this time, the wave
front splits into two parts and clear fringes appear. The experiment is modeled
using an effective 1D Gross-Pitaevskii-like equation and gives excellent
quantitative agreement with the experiment, even though matter waves with
wavelengths two orders of magnitude smaller than the healing length are
present. In these experiments, no significant heating or particle loss is
observed.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Family and government insurance: Wage, earnings, and income risks in the Netherlands and the U.S.
We document new facts about risk in male wages and earnings, household earnings, and pre- and post-tax income in the Netherlands and the United States. We find that, in both countries, earnings display important deviations from the typical assumptions of linearity and normality. Individual-level male wage and earnings risk is relatively high at the beginning and end of the working life, and for those in the lower and upper parts of the income distribution. Hours are the main driver of the negative skewness and, to a lesser extent, the high kurtosis of earnings changes. Even though we find no evidence of added-worker effects, the presence of spousal earnings reduces the variability of household income compared to that of male earnings. In the Netherlands, government transfers are a major source of insurance, substantially reducing the standard deviation, negative skewness, and kurtosis of income changes. In the U.S. the role of family insurance is much larger than in the Netherlands. Family and government insurance reduce, but do not eliminate non-linearities in household disposable income by age and previous earnings in either country
