    Academic Subjective Well-being Among Students at College of Education in King Khalid University in the Light of Some Demographic Variables

    The current research aimed to identify the level of academic subjective well-being among students at college of education in King Khalid university, and to explore the differences in academic subjective well-being among students according to the variables: age group, gender, academic qualification, academic specialization, and participation in university activities. To achieve these goals; The descriptive method was used, and the academic subjective well-being scale was prepared and applied. The sample of the research consisted of (134) students (32 males and 102 females), their ages were between (18 – 45) years, they belonging to various programs at College of Education in King Khalid University. The research reached the following results: there were a high level of total score of academic subjective well-being scale and its sub-dimensions among students at College of Education in King Khalid University, except for the fourth dimension (academic effectiveness), which achieve a very high level, and there were statistically significant differences in the level of academic subjective well-being according to a variable age group for adults, and according to the academic qualification for a doctoral qualification compared to a bachelor’s qualification. While there werent statistically significant differences in the academic subjective well-being according to the variables: gender, academic specialization, participation in university activities, doctoral qualification compared to masters qualification, and masters qualification compared to bachelors qualification

    Evaluation of Teaching Performance in the Light of the Information, Media and Technology Skills of Faculty Members at the College of Education, King Khalid University

    The aim of the research is to evaluate the teaching performance in the light of the Information, Media and Technology Skills of faculty members from the point of view of their students in postgraduate programs at the College of Education at King Khalid University. To achieve this goal, the descriptive analytical method was used. A list of the appropriate teaching performance(s) for faculty members was prepared in the light of the Information, Media and Technology Skills. Through this list an electronic questionnaire was prepared to evaluate students’ point of view of the teaching performance. The questionnaire was applied to (136) postgraduate students in the academic year 1439/1440 AH. The results of the research revealed that the level of teaching performance in the light of the Information, Media and Technology Skills, as a whole, among faculty members was at a high level at a rate of (78%), and there was no statistically significant difference at the level of (0.05) between this level and the level of educationally defined competence at (80%) of the overall performance, the results also revealed that there were no statistically significant differences at the level of (0.05) between the degree of teaching performance of faculty members in the light of the Information, Media and Technology Skills according to the demographic variables of the sample (program type, specialization, gender, years of experience, and academic level)

    Design, Synthesis, Chemical and Biochemical Insights Into Novel Hybrid Spirooxindole-Based p53-MDM2 Inhibitors With Potential Bcl2 Signaling Attenuation

    The tumor resistance to p53 activators posed a clinical challenge. Combination studies disclosed that concomitant administration of Bcl2 inhibitors can sensitize the tumor cells and induce apoptosis. In this study, we utilized a rapid synthetic route to synthesize two novel hybrid spirooxindole-based p53-MDM2 inhibitors endowed with Bcl2 signaling attenuation. The adducts mimic the thematic features of the chemically stable potent spiro [3H-indole-3,2′-pyrrolidin]-2(1H)-ones p53-MDM2 inhibitors, while installing a pyrrole ring via a carbonyl spacer inspired by the natural marine or synthetic products that efficiently inhibit Bcl2 family functions. A chemical insight into the two synthesized spirooxindoles including single crystal x-ray diffraction analysis unambiguously confirmed their structures. The synthesized spirooxindoles 2a and 2b were preliminarily tested for cytotoxic activities against normal cells, MDA-MB 231, HepG-2, and Caco-2 via MTT assay. 2b was superior to 5-fluorouracil. Mechanistically, 2b induced apoptosis-dependent anticancer effect (43%) higher than that of 5-fluorouracil (34.95%) in three studied cancer cell lines, activated p53 (47%), downregulated the Bcl2 gene (1.25-fold), and upregulated p21 (2-fold) in the treated cancer cells.     Burden of rotavirus gastroenteritis in the Middle Eastern and North African pediatric population

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) is the most common cause of severe childhood diarrhea worldwide. Objectives were to estimate the burden of RVGE among children less than five years old in the Middle East (Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, UAE, Yemen), North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia) and Turkey.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A comprehensive literature search was conducted in major databases on the epidemiology and burden of rotavirus among children less than five years old between 1999 and 2009. Data from each country was extracted and compared.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The search identified 43 studies. RVGE was identified in 16-61% of all cases of acute gastroenteritis, with a peak in the winter. RVGE-related hospitalization rates ranged from 14% to 45%, compared to 14%-28% for non-RVGE. Annually, RVGE caused up to 112 fatalities per 100,000 in certain countries in the region. Hospitalization costs ranged from 1.8to1.8 to 4.6 million annually, depending on the country. The most recent literature available showed that G1P[8] was the most prevalent genotype combination in 8 countries (range 23%-56%). G2P[4] was most prevalent in 4 countries (26%-48%). G9P[8] and G4P[8] were also frequently detected.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>RVGE is a common disease associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. Given the variety and diverse rotavirus types in the region, use of a vaccine with broad and consistent serotype coverage would be important to help decrease the burden of RVGE in the Middle East and North Africa.</p

    Decline in subarachnoid haemorrhage volumes associated with the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

    BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study\u27s objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study across 6 continents, 37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres. Patients with the diagnosis of SAH, aneurysmal SAH, ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before (1 year and immediately before) and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020. The prior 1-year control period (1 March-31 May 2019) was obtained to account for seasonal variation. FINDINGS: There was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5% (95% CI -24.3% to -20.7%, p\u3c0.0001). Embolisation of ruptured aneurysms declined with 1170-1035 procedures, respectively, representing an 11.5% (95%CI -13.5% to -9.8%, p=0.002) relative drop. Subgroup analysis was noted for aneurysmal SAH hospitalisation decline from 834 to 626 hospitalisations, a 24.9% relative decline (95% CI -28.0% to -22.1%, p\u3c0.0001). A relative increase in ruptured aneurysm coiling was noted in low coiling volume hospitals of 41.1% (95% CI 32.3% to 50.6%, p=0.008) despite a decrease in SAH admissions in this tertile. INTERPRETATION: There was a relative decrease in the volume of SAH hospitalisations, aneurysmal SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm embolisations during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings in SAH are consistent with a decrease in other emergencies, such as stroke and myocardial infarction

    Drugs targeting different calcium channel subtypes have strong therapeutic potential for future drug development for cardiovascular disorders, neuropsychiatric diseases and cancer. This study aims to design and synthesize a new series of C2 substituted dihydropyrimidines to mimic the structure features of third generation long acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers and dihydropyrimidines analogues. The target compounds have been evaluated as blockers for Ca1.2 and Ca3.2 utilizing the whole-cell patch clamp technique. Among the tested compounds, compound 7a showed moderate calcium channel blockade activity against Ca3.2. Moreover, the predicted physicochemical properties and pharmacokinetic profiles of the target compounds recommend that they can be considered as drug-like candidates. The results highlight some significant information for the future design of lead compounds as calcium channel blockers

    Abstract Background Respiratory viruses, particularly adenoviruses (ADV), influenza A virus (e.g., H1N1), and coronaviruses (e.g., HCoV-229E and SARS-CoV-2) pose a global public health problem. Therefore, developing natural wide-spectrum antiviral compounds for disrupting the viral life cycle with antioxidant activity provides an efficient treatment approach. Herein, biosurfactant (Sur) and C50 carotenoid pigment (Pig) of haloalkaliphilic archaeon Natrialba sp. M6 which exhibited potent efficacy against hepatitis and anti-herpes simplex viruses, were investigated against pulmonary viruses. Methods The cytotoxicity of the extracted Sur and Pig was examined on susceptible cell lines for ADV, HIN1, HCoV-229E, and SARS-CoV-2. Their potential against the cytopathic activity of these viruses was detected with investigating the action modes (including, virucidal, anti-adsorption, and anti-replication), unveiling the main mechanisms, and using molecular docking analysis. Radical scavenging activity was determined and HPLC analysis for potent extract (Sur) was performed. Results All current investigations stated higher anti-pulmonary viruses of Sur than Pig via mainly virucidal and/or anti-replicative modes. Moreover, Sur had stronger ADV’s capsid protein binding, ADV’s DNA polymerase inhibition, suppressing hemagglutinin and neuraminidase of H1N1, and inhibiting chymotrypsin-like (3CL) protease of SARS-CoV-2, supporting with in-silico analysis, as well as radical scavenging activity than Pig. HPLC analysis of Sur confirmed the predominate presence of surfactin in it. Conclusion This study declared the promising efficacy of Sur as an efficient pharmacological treatment option for these pulmonary viruses and considered as guide for further in vivo research

    Design, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of some substituted dihydropyrimidines with L-/T-type calcium channel blocking activities

    New dihydropyrimidines bearing various lipophilic pharmacophores and functionalities at position 3 were designed and synthesized. The basic framework of the new compounds was designed to maintain the main structural requirements for calcium channel blocking activity of the known dihydropyridines and dihydropyrimidines calcium channel blockers. The newly synthesized compounds were evaluated as antagonists for Ca1.2 and Ca3.2 using the whole-cell patch clamp technique. Seven compounds (4b, 4c, 6c, 9, 13c, 13e and 17b) showed promising dual calcium channel blocking activity and three compounds (13b, 14b and 17a) were selective against Cav3.2. Their drug-likeness has been assessed using Molinspiration and Molsoft softwares. Their physicochemical properties and pharmacokinetic profiles recommend that they can be considered as drug-like candidates
