    A crossing probability for critical percolation in two dimensions

    Langlands et al. considered two crossing probabilities, pi_h and pi_{hv}, in their extensive numerical investigations of critical percolation in two dimensions. Cardy was able to find the exact form of pi_h by treating it as a correlation function of boundary operators in the Q goes to 1 limit of the Q state Potts model.     A tool for filtering information in complex systems

    We introduce a technique to filter out complex data-sets by extracting a subgraph of representative links. Such a filtering can be tuned up to any desired level by controlling the genus of the resulting graph. We show that this technique is especially suitable for correlation based graphs giving filtered graphs which preserve the hierarchical organization of the minimum spanning tree but containing a larger amount of information in their internal structure. In particular in the case of planar filtered graphs (genus equal to 0) triangular loops and 4 element cliques are formed. The application of this filtering procedure to 100 stocks in the USA equity markets shows that such loops and cliques have important and significant relations with the market structure and properties.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 4 table

    Since the pandemic, there has been widespread increased concern about children's spiritual well-being. [The pandemic] is a once in a generation opportunity to transform the wider education system around the child so that wellbeing is truly at the heart of the learning environment in schools. (Barnardo’s, 2020) [A] challenge faced by the child Jesus set in our midst is one of health and safety and especially mental, emotional, and spiritual health...COVID has revealed a tidal wave of mental health pressures on the young which has been building for decades. (Bishop Steven, Oxford Diocese) We know from previous NICER research , conducted before the pandemic that there is a need to pay attention to and nurture the spirituality of children for them to flourish. We also know that many adults have limited awareness of the importance of this nurture and do not fully appreciate what children need to flourish spiritually. Research has shown that Faith communities have the potential to be a vital source of a sense of belonging and support for the spiritual nurture of children and adults. We identified a need to research children's understanding of what contributes to their spiritual well-being within the church school community context

    Modelling the deformation of biologically inspired flexible structures for needle steering

    Recent technical advances in minimally invasive surgery have been enabled by the development of new medical instruments and technologies. To date, the vast majority of mechanisms used within a clinical context are rigid, contrasting with the compliant nature of biological tissues. The field of robotics has seen an increased interest in flexible and compliant systems, and in this paper we investigate the behaviour of deformable multi-segment structures, which take their inspiration from the ovipositor design of parasitic wood wasps. These configurable structures have been shown to steer through highly compliant substrates, potentially enabling percutaneous access to the most delicate of tissues, such as the brain. The model presented here sheds light on how the deformation of the unique structure is related to its shape, and allows comparison between different potential designs. A finite element study is used to evaluate the proposed model, which is shown to provide a good fit (root-mean-square deviation 0.2636 mm for 4-segment case). The results show that both 3-segment and 4-segment designs are able to achieve deformation in all directions, however the magnitude of deformation is more consistent in the 4-segment case

    Evolutionary Dynamics on Small-Order Graphs

    Abstract. We study the stochastic birth-death model for structured finite populations popularized by Lieberman et al. [Lieberman, E., Hauert, C., Nowak, M.A., 2005. Evolutionary dynamics on graphs. Nature 433, 312-316]. We consider all possible connected undirected graphs of orders three through eight. For each graph, using the Monte Carlo Markov Chain simulations, we determine the fixation probability of a mutant introduced at every possible vertex. We show that the fixation probability depends on the vertex and on the graph. A randomly placed mutant has the highest chances of fixation in a star graph, closely followed by star-like graphs. The fixation probability was lowest for regular and almost regular graphs. We also find that within a fixed graph, the fixation probability of a mutant has a negative correlation with the degree of the starting vertex. 1
