    New bounds for multi-dimensional packing

    New upper and lower bounds are presented for a multi-dimensional generalization of bin packing called box packing. Several variants of this problem, including bounded space box packing, square packing, variable sized box packing and resource augmented box packing are also studied. The main results, stated for d=2, are as follows: A new upper bound of 2.66013 for online box packing, a new 14/9+varepsilon14/9 + varepsilon polynomial time offline approximation algorithm for square packing, a new upper bound of 2.43828 for online square packing, a new lower bound of 1.62176 for online square packing, a new lower bound of 2.28229 for bounded space online square packing and a new upper bound of 2.32571 for online two-sized box packing

    Surface Brightness Gradients Produced by the Ring Waves of Star Formation

    We compute surface brightness profiles of galactic disks for outwardly propagating waves of star formation with a view to investigate the stellar populations in ring galaxies. We consider two mechanisms which can create outwardly propagating star forming rings in a purely gaseous disk --- a self-induced wave and a density wave. We show that the surface brightness profiles produced by both scenarios of ring formation are similar and are strongly sensitive to the velocity of the wave. The results of our computations are compared with the observational quantities sensitive to the young and old stellar populations in the ring galaxies A0035-335 (the Cartwheel galaxy) and VIIZw466. The best fit to the observed radial H_alpha surface brightness distribution in the Cartwheel galaxy is obtained for a wave velocity of about 90 km/s. The red continuum brightness of the ring can be fully explained by the evolving stars present in the trailing part of the wave. However the red continuum brightness in regions internal to the ring indicates that the wave of star formation propagates in a pre-existing stellar disk in the Cartwheel. The H_alpha and K-band surface brightness profiles in VIIZw466 match the values expected from stellar populations produced by a wave of star formation propagating in a purely gaseous disk very well.     Scale Dependent Dimension of Luminous Matter in the Universe

    We present a geometrical model of the distribution of luminous matter in the universe, derived from a very simple reaction-diffusion model of turbulent phenomena. The apparent dimension of luminous matter, D(l)D(l), depends linearly on the logarithm of the scale ll under which the universe is viewed: D(l)3log(l/l0)/log(ξ/l0)D(l) \sim 3\log(l/l_0)/\log(\xi/l_0), where ξ\xi is a correlation length. Comparison with data from the SARS red-shift catalogue, and the LEDA database provides a good fit with a correlation length ξ300\xi \sim 300 Mpc. The geometrical interpretation is clear: At small distances, the universe is zero-dimensional and point-like. At distances of the order of 1 Mpc the dimension is unity, indicating a filamentary, string-like structure; when viewed at larger scales it gradually becomes 2-dimensional wall-like, and finally, at and beyond the correlation length, it becomes uniform.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Combining request scheduling with web caching

    We extend the classic paging model by allowing reordering of requests under the constraint that a request is delayed by no longer than a predetermined number of time steps. We first give a dynamic programming algorithm to solve the offline case. Then we give tight bounds on competitive ratios for the online case. For caches of size k, we obtain bounds of k + O(1) for deterministic algorithms and Theta(log k) for randomized algorithms. We also give bounds for the case where either the online or the offline algorithm can reorder the requests, but not both. Finally, we extend our analysis to the case where pages have different sizes

    Brain Injury With Systemic Inflammation in Newborns With Congenital Heart Disease Undergoing Heart Surgery

    The potential role of systemic inflammation on brain injury in newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) was assessed by measuring levels of central nervous system (CNS)-derived proteins in serum prior to and following cardiac surgery. A total of 23 newborns (gestational age, 39±1 weeks) with a diagnosis of CHD that required cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) were enrolled in the current study. Serum samples were collected immediately prior to surgery and 2, 24 and 48 h following CPB, and serum levels of phosphorylated neurofilament-heavy subunit (pNF-H), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S100B were analyzed. Systemic inflammation was assessed by measuring serum concentrations of complement C5a and complement sC5b9, and the following cytokines: Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL12p70, interferon γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. Analysis of cord blood from normal term deliveries (n=26) provided surrogate normative values for newborns. pNF-H and S100B were 2.4- to 2.8-fold higher (P\u3c0.0001) in patient sera than in cord blood prior to surgery and remained elevated following CPB. Pre-surgical serum pNF-H and S100B levels directly correlated with interleukin (IL)-12p70 (ρ=0.442, P\u3c0.05). pNF-H was inversely correlated with arterial pO2 prior to surgery (ρ=-0.493, P=0.01) and directly correlated with arterial pCO2 post-CPB (ρ=0.426, P\u3c0.05), suggesting that tissue hypoxia and inflammation contribute to blood brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction and neuronal injury. Serum IL12p70, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α levels were significantly higher in patients than in normal cord blood and levels of these cytokines increased following CPB (P\u3c0.001). Activation of complement was observed in all patients prior to surgery, and serum C5a and sC5b9 remained elevated up to 48 h post-surgery. Furthermore, they were correlated (P\u3c0.05) with low arterial pO2, high pCO2 and elevated arterial pressure in the postoperative period. Length of mechanical ventilation was associated directly with post-surgery serum IL-12p70 and IL-8 concentrations (P\u3c0.05). Elevated serum concentrations of pNF-H and S100B in neonates with CHD suggest BBB dysfunction and CNS injury, with concurrent hypoxemia and an activated inflammatory response potentiating this effect

    Comparison of 35 and 50 {\mu}m thin HPK UFSD after neutron irradiation up to 6*10^15 neq/cm^2

    We report results from the testing of 35 {\mu}m thick Ultra-Fast Silicon Detectors (UFSD produced by Hamamatsu Photonics (HPK), Japan and the comparison of these new results to data reported before on 50 {\mu}m thick UFSD produced by HPK. The 35 {\mu}m thick sensors were irradiated with neutrons to fluences of 0, 1*10^14, 1*10^15, 3*10^15, 6*10^15 neq/cm^2. The sensors were tested pre-irradiation and post-irradiation with minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) from a 90Sr \b{eta}-source. The leakage current, capacitance, internal gain and the timing resolution were measured as a function of bias voltage at -20C and -27C. The timing resolution was extracted from the time difference with a second calibrated UFSD in coincidence, using the constant fraction method for both.     Vector Bin Packing with Multiple-Choice

    We consider a variant of bin packing called multiple-choice vector bin packing. In this problem we are given a set of items, where each item can be selected in one of several DD-dimensional incarnations. We are also given TT bin types, each with its own cost and DD-dimensional size. Our goal is to pack the items in a set of bins of minimum overall cost. The problem is motivated by scheduling in networks with guaranteed quality of service (QoS), but due to its general formulation it has many other applications as well. We present an approximation algorithm that is guaranteed to produce a solution whose cost is about lnD\ln D times the optimum. For the running time to be polynomial we require D=O(1)D=O(1) and T=O(logn)T=O(\log n). This extends previous results for vector bin packing, in which each item has a single incarnation and there is only one bin type. To obtain our result we also present a PTAS for the multiple-choice version of multidimensional knapsack, where we are given only one bin and the goal is to pack a maximum weight set of (incarnations of) items in that bin

    Relation between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and cardiovascular and renal markers in a middle-income country in the African region.

    BACKGROUND: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is associated with several cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) and with renal function markers. However, these associations have not been examined in populations in the African region. We analyzed the distribution of hs-CRP and the relationship with a broad set of CVRF, renal markers and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), in the Seychelles (African region). METHODS: We conducted a survey in the population aged 25-64years (n=1255, participation rate: 80.2%). Analyses were restricted to persons of predominantly African descent (n=1011). RESULTS: Mean and median hs-CRP serum concentrations (mg/l) were 3.1 (SD 7.6) and 1.4 (IQR 0.7-2.9) in men and 4.5 (SD 6.7) and 2.2 (IQR 1.0-5.4) in women (p<0.001 for difference between men and women). hs-CRP was significantly associated with several conventional CVRF, and particularly strongly with markers of adiposity. With regards to renal markers, hs-CRP was strongly associated with cystatin C and with microalbuminuria but not with creatinine. hs-CRP was not associated with IMT. CONCLUSIONS: Serum concentration of hs-CRP was significantly associated with sex, several CVRF and selected renal function markers, which extends similar findings in Europe and in North America to a population in the African region. These findings can contribute to guide recommendations for the use of hs-CRP in clinical practice in the region
