IRRIGATION AND POTENTIAL DIVERSIFICATION BENEFITS IN HUMID CLIMATES
Income variability and means for managing risk continue to receive much attention in farm management research. In this paper, irrigation is presented as a risk-management strategy that offers potential diversification benefits. Potential diversification opportunities largely result from a wider range of enterprise production activities. A portfolio analysis of dryland and irrigated farm scenarios indicates that income stabilizing and diversification effects of irrigation substantially modify the risk-return position of a typical farm in northeast Louisiana. Safety-first considerations along with Target MOTAD programming procedures also are used to evaluate the impact of irrigation on the farm's financial performance.Farm Management,
Anatomical and biomechanical traits of broiler chickens across ontogeny. Part II. Body segment inertial properties and muscle architecture of the pelvic limb
In broiler chickens, genetic success for desired production traits is often shadowed by welfare concerns related to musculoskeletal health. Whilst these concerns are clear, a viable solution is still elusive. Part of the solution lies in knowing how anatomical changes in afflicted body systems that occur across ontogeny influence standing and moving. Here, to demonstrate these changes we quantify the segment inertial properties of the whole body, trunk (legs removed) and the right pelvic limb segments of five broilers at three different age groups across development. We also consider how muscle architecture (mass, fascicle length and other properties related to mechanics) changes for selected muscles of the pelvic limb. All broilers used had no observed lameness, but we document the limb pathologies identified post mortem, since these two factors do not always correlate, as shown here. The most common leg disorders, including bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis and rotational and angular deformities of the lower limb, were observed in chickens at all developmental stages. Whole limb morphology is not uniform relative to body size, with broilers obtaining large thighs and feet between four and six weeks of age. This implies that the energetic cost of swinging the limbs is markedly increased across this growth period, perhaps contributing to reduced activity levels. Hindlimb bone length does not change during this period, which may be advantageous for increased stability despite the increased energetic costs. Increased pectoral muscle growth appears to move the centre of mass cranio-dorsally in the last two weeks of growth. This has direct consequences for locomotion (potentially greater limb muscle stresses during standing and moving). Our study is the first to measure these changes in the musculoskeletal system across growth in chickens, and reveals how artificially selected changes of the morphology of the pectoral apparatus may cause deficits in locomotion
Asteroseismic classification of stellar populations among 13000 red giants observed by Kepler
Of the more than 150000 targets followed by the Kepler Mission, about 10%
were selected as red giants. Due to their high scientific value, in particular
for Galaxy population studies and stellar structure and evolution, their Kepler
light curves were made public in late 2011. More than 13000 (over 85%) of these
stars show intrinsic flux variability caused by solar-like oscillations making
them ideal for large scale asteroseismic investigations. We automatically
extracted individual frequencies and measured the period spacings of the dipole
modes in nearly every red giant. These measurements naturally classify the
stars into various populations, such as the red giant branch, the low-mass
(M/Msol
1.8) secondary clump. The period spacings also reveal that a large fraction of
the stars show rotationally induced frequency splittings. This sample of stars
will undoubtedly provide an extremely valuable source for studying the stellar
population in the direction of the Kepler field, in particular when combined

Windows .NET Network Distributed Basic Local Alignment Search Toolkit (W.ND-BLAST)
BACKGROUND: BLAST is one of the most common and useful tools for Genetic Research. This paper describes a software application we have termed Windows .NET Distributed Basic Local Alignment Search Toolkit (W.ND-BLAST), which enhances the BLAST utility by improving usability, fault recovery, and scalability in a Windows desktop environment. Our goal was to develop an easy to use, fault tolerant, high-throughput BLAST solution that incorporates a comprehensive BLAST result viewer with curation and annotation functionality. RESULTS: W.ND-BLAST is a comprehensive Windows-based software toolkit that targets researchers, including those with minimal computer skills, and provides the ability increase the performance of BLAST by distributing BLAST queries to any number of Windows based machines across local area networks (LAN). W.ND-BLAST provides intuitive Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) for BLAST database creation, BLAST execution, BLAST output evaluation and BLAST result exportation. This software also provides several layers of fault tolerance and fault recovery to prevent loss of data if nodes or master machines fail. This paper lays out the functionality of W.ND-BLAST. W.ND-BLAST displays close to 100% performance efficiency when distributing tasks to 12 remote computers of the same performance class. A high throughput BLAST job which took 662.68 minutes (11 hours) on one average machine was completed in 44.97 minutes when distributed to 17 nodes, which included lower performance class machines. Finally, there is a comprehensive high-throughput BLAST Output Viewer (BOV) and Annotation Engine components, which provides comprehensive exportation of BLAST hits to text files, annotated fasta files, tables, or association files. CONCLUSION: W.ND-BLAST provides an interactive tool that allows scientists to easily utilizing their available computing resources for high throughput and comprehensive sequence analyses. Phoretic Motion of Spheroidal Particles Due To Self-Generated Solute Gradients
We study theoretically the phoretic motion of a spheroidal particle, which
generates solute gradients in the surrounding unbounded solvent via chemical
reactions active on its surface in a cap-like region centered at one of the
poles of the particle. We derive, within the constraints of the mapping to
classical diffusio-phoresis, an analytical expression for the phoretic velocity
of such an object. This allows us to analyze in detail the dependence of the
velocity on the aspect ratio of the polar and the equatorial diameters of the
particle and on the fraction of the particle surface contributing to the
chemical reaction. The particular cases of a sphere and of an approximation for
a needle-like particle, which are the most common shapes employed in
experimental realizations of such self-propelled objects, are obtained from the
general solution in the limits that the aspect ratio approaches one or becomes

Ordinal Probit Functional Regression Models with Application to Computer-Use Behavior in Rhesus Monkeys
Research in functional regression has made great strides in expanding to
non-Gaussian functional outcomes, however the exploration of ordinal functional
outcomes remains limited. Motivated by a study of computer-use behavior in
rhesus macaques (\emph{Macaca mulatta}), we introduce the Ordinal Probit
Functional Regression Model or OPFRM to perform ordinal function-on-scalar
regression. The OPFRM is flexibly formulated to allow for the choice of
different basis functions including penalized B-splines, wavelets, and
O'Sullivan splines. We demonstrate the operating characteristics of the model
in simulation using a variety of underlying covariance patterns showing the
model performs reasonably well in estimation under multiple basis functions. We
also present and compare two approaches for conducting posterior inference
showing that joint credible intervals tend to out perform point-wise credible.
Finally, in application, we determine demographic factors associated with the
monkeys' computer use over the course of a year and provide a brief analysis of
the findings
Identifying persuasive public health messages to change community knowledge and attitudes about bulimia nervosa
Addressing stigma through social marketing campaigns has the potential to enhance currently low rates of treatment seeking and improve the well-being of individuals with the eating disorder bulimia nervosa. This study aimed to evaluate the persuasiveness of health messages designed to reduce stigma and improve mental health literacy about this disorder. A community sample of 1,936 adults (48.2% male, 51.8% female) from Victoria, Australia, provided (a) self-report information on knowledge and stigma about bulimia nervosa and (b) ratings of the persuasiveness of 9 brief health messages on dimensions of convincingness and likelihood of changing attitudes. Messages were rated moderately to very convincing and a little to moderately likely to change attitudes toward bulimia nervosa. The most persuasive messages were those that emphasized that bulimia nervosa is a serious mental illness and is not attributable to personal failings. Higher ratings of convincingness were associated with being female, with having more knowledge about bulimia nervosa, and with lower levels of stigma about bulimia nervosa. Higher ratings for likelihood of changing attitudes were associated with being female and with ratings of the convincingness of the corresponding message. This study provides direction for persuasive content to be included in social marketing campaigns to reduce stigma toward bulimia nervosa.10 page(s
A Survey of Expert Opinion Regarding Rotator Cuff Repair.
Many patients with rotator cuff tears have questions for their surgeons regarding the surgical procedure, perioperative management, restrictions, therapy, and ability to work after a rotator cuff repair. The purpose of our study was to determine common clinical practices among experts regarding rotator cuff repair and to assist them in counseling patients. We surveyed 372 members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and the Association of Clinical Elbow and Shoulder Surgeons (ACESS); 111 members (29.8%) completed all or part of the survey, and 92.8% of the respondents answered every question. A consensus response (\u3e50% agreement) was achieved on 49% (24 of 49) of the questions.
