Cleaning Up China\u27s Air: The Effectiveness of the EEP Plan in Beijing

China’s economy has developed rapidly in the past 40 years since the reform and opening up. However, China’s irrational economic structure, low efficiency of resource utilization and serious environmental pollution have become important factors restricting the long-term healthy development of China’s economy. More importantly, pollution issues in China seriously affect the development of the regime due to public concerns in terms of health issues. In 2014, senior government officials said publicly that China would “declare war on pollution.” Since then, air pollution has improved to a certain extent, with PM 2.5 levels falling 23.6 percent from 2013 to 2015, but still falling far short of people’s expectations. In 2016, the Chinese government promised in the EEP plan to make up for the shortfall and strengthen environmental protection. The Five-Year Plan initially refers to the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) leading role in setting growth targets and launching reforms to map strategies for economic development. Since the 10th Five-Year Plan passed in 2001, all subsequent plans have included regulations and goals for protecting the environment within the agenda

Power, Interdependence and Conflict: What IR theories tell us about China\u27s rise

This study examines the effects that economic interdependence (EI) hason political relations between China and its main trading partners. Five EI theories derived from the international relations literature are tested using data from King\u27s 10 Million Dyad collection of political interaction along with economic data from the IMF and control variable data from Polity IV, COW CINC, among other sources. Though a significant amount of literature addresses the effects trade has on conflict at the systemic level, few address it at the dyadic level and even fewer test the pacification of trade on non-Western states. This research examines economic, political, institutional, geographical and political relations data from 1990 to 2004 to test two neoliberal hypotheses that posit interdependence is associated with cooperative political relations between states. Furthermore, the research tests the neoliberal institutionalist hypothesis that joint-institutional membership helps to increase political cooperation. Two neorealist theories are tests. The first hypothesis states that the unequal distribution of trade benefits leads to a deterioration of political relations. The second states that relative power increases lead to a deterioration of political relations. Findings generally support neorealist hypotheses. However, neoliberal contentions that relative power increases do not necessarily lead to conflict when international economic influences are taken into consideration are supported

Intervention for a lexical reading and spelling difficulty in two Greek-speaking primary age children

An intervention study was carried out with two nine-year-old Greek-speaking dyslexic children. Both children were slow in reading single words and text and had difficulty in spelling irregularly spelled words. One child was also poor in non-word reading. Intervention focused on spelling in a whole-word training using a flashcard technique that had previously been found to be effective with English-speaking children. Post-intervention assessments conducted immediately at the end of the intervention, one month later and then five months later showed a significant improvement in spelling of treated words that was sustained over time. In addition, both children showed generalisation of improvement to untrained words and an increase in scores in a standardised spelling assessment. The findings support the effectiveness of theoretically based targeted intervention for literacy difficulties

Fertilizing No-Till Corn

Results of an experiment conducted in 1968 at Princeton, Kentucky on low phosphate soil showed that surface-applied phosphorus was sufficiently available to no-till corn to produce good yields. This experiment was repeated again in the 1969 growing season with the results well in line with those reported for 1968 in Agronomy Research (Misc. 377) pages 41-43

HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer: epidemiology, molecular biology and clinical management.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive (HPV+) oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has one of the most rapidly increasing incidences of any cancer in high-income countries. The most recent (8th) edition of the UICC/AJCC staging system separates HPV+ OPSCC from its HPV-negative (HPV-) counterpart to account for the improved prognosis seen in the former. Indeed, owing to its improved prognosis and greater prevalence in younger individuals, numerous ongoing trials are examining the potential for treatment de-intensification as a means to improve quality of life while maintaining acceptable survival outcomes. In addition, owing to the distinct biology of HPV+ OPSCCs, targeted therapies and immunotherapies have become an area of particular interest. Importantly, OPSCC is often detected at an advanced stage owing to a lack of symptoms in the early stages; therefore, a need exists to identify and validate possible diagnostic biomarkers to aid in earlier detection. In this Review, we provide a summary of the epidemiology, molecular biology and clinical management of HPV+ OPSCC in an effort to highlight important advances in the field. Ultimately, a need exists for improved understanding of the molecular basis and clinical course of this disease to guide efforts towards early detection and precision care, and to improve patient outcomes

Direct determination of absolute stereochemistry of α-methylselenocysteine using the Mosher method

Mosher amides of α-methylselenocysteine were synthesized to determine the absolute stereochemistry of the sterically hindered α-carbon utilizing 1H, 13C, 19F, and 77Se NMR spectroscopies. After analysis of these spectra using the established Mosher method, the stereochemistry of the α-carbon was determined to be (R), which was subsequently confirmed using x-ray crystallography

A Survey of the Medical Services in the Texas Prison System

The purpose of this research paper was to conduct a hospital management survey of the administration of medical services for prison inmates within the Texas Prison system. This type of survey has not been conducted within the medical services of the Texas Prison System in the past by any individual, or public or private group. Specific purposes were to appraise certain major areas in this system, to compare these findings with authoritative survey criteria, and to make recommendations based on the findings of the investigation

Charge Symmetry Violation Effects in Pion Scattering off the Deuteron

We discuss the theoretical and experimental situations for charge symmetry violation (CSV) effects in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on deuterium (D) and 3He/3H. Accurate comparison of data for both types of targets provides evidence for the presence of CSV effects. While there are indications of a CSV effect in deuterium, it is much more pronounced in the case of 3He/3H. We provide a description of the CSV effect on the deuteron in terms of single- and double- scattering amplitudes. The Delta-mass splitting is taken into account. Theoretical predictions are compared with existing experimental data for pi-d scattering; a future article will speak to the pi-three nucleon case.Comment: 16 pages of RevTeX, 7 postscript figure
