    Contacting single bundles of carbon nanotubes with alternating electric fields

    Single bundles of carbon nanotubes have been selectively deposited from suspensions onto sub-micron electrodes with alternating electric fields. We explore the resulting contacts using several solvents and delineate the differences between Au and Ag as electrode materials. Alignment of the bundles between electrodes occurs at frequencies above 1 kHz. Control over the number of trapped bundles is achieved by choosing an electrode material which interacts strongly with the chemical functional groups of the carbon nanotubes, with superior contacts being formed with Ag electrodes.Comment: 4 pages, RevTe

    Reconstruction methods for acoustic particle detection in the deep sea using clusters of hydrophones

    This article focuses on techniques for acoustic noise reduction, signal filters and source reconstruction. For noise reduction, bandpass filters and cross correlations are found to be efficient and fast ways to improve the signal to noise ratio and identify a possible neutrino-induced acoustic signal. The reconstruction of the position of an acoustic point source in the sea is performed by using small-volume clusters of hydrophones (about 1 cubic meter) for direction reconstruction by a beamforming algorithm. The directional information from a number of such clusters allows for position reconstruction. The algorithms for data filtering, direction and position reconstruction are explained and demonstrated using simulated data.Comment: 7 pages, 13 figure

    Heteroleptic copper(I) complexes with coumarin-substituted aminodiphosphine and diimine ligands: synthesis and photophysical studies

    The synthesis of heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes with coumarin-functionalized aminodiphosphine and diimine ligands is described. The complexes show yellow to deep-red phosphorescence in the solid state at ambient temperature with quantum yields up to 21%. The emission color of the complexes can be tuned by systematic modifications in the ligand system

    Helium in superstrong magnetic fields

    We investigate the helium atom embedded in a superstrong magnetic field gamma=100-10000 au. All effects due to the finite nuclear mass for vanishing pseudomomentum are taken into account. The influence and the magnitude of the different finite mass effects are analyzed and discussed. Within our full configuration interaction approach calculations are performed for the magnetic quantum numbers M=0,-1,-2,-3, singlet and triplet states, as well as positive and negative z parities. Up to six excited states for each symmetry are studied. With increasing field strength the number of bound states decreases rapidly and we remain with a comparatively small number of bound states for gamma=10^4 au within the symmetries investigated here.Comment: 16 pages, including 14 eps figures, submitted to Phys.     Why we can no longer ignore consecutive disasters

    In recent decades, a striking number of countries have suffered from consecutive disasters: events whose impacts overlap both spatially and temporally, while recovery is still under way. The risk of consecutive disasters will increase due to growing exposure, the interconnectedness of human society, and the increased frequency and intensity of nontectonic hazard. This paper provides an overview of the different types of consecutive disasters, their causes, and impacts. The impacts can be distinctly different from disasters occurring in isolation (both spatially and temporally) from other disasters, noting that full isolation never occurs. We use existing empirical disaster databases to show the global probabilistic occurrence for selected hazard types. Current state‐of‐the art risk assessment models and their outputs do not allow for a thorough representation and analysis of consecutive disasters. This is mainly due to the many challenges that are introduced by addressing and combining hazards of different nature, and accounting for their interactions and dynamics. Disaster risk management needs to be more holistic and codesigned between researchers, policy makers, first responders, and companies

    Structure, Dynamics, and Phase Transitions in the Fullerene Derivatives C_{60}O and C_{61}H_{2}

    The effect of perturbing the icosohedral symmetry of C60 by the addition of the side groups -O and -CH2 upon orientational order-disorder and glass transitions in solid C60 has been studied by a combination of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry and single-crystal x-ray and powder inelastic neutron scattering. Both fullerene derivatives C60O (epoxide) and C61H2 (6,5-annulene) are shown to undergo a sequence of transitions similar to that found in pure C60, i.e., a first-order orientational ordering transition just below room temperature followed by an orientational glass transition at lower temperatures. Although the exact origin of the glass transition in C61H2 is unclear, the glass transition in C60O has the same origin as that in C60, with a significantly higher degree of order due to a larger energy difference between pentagon and hexagon orientations. The dilatometric data at the glass transition indicate that, in contrast to C60, the ground-state orientation of both C60O and C61H2 molecules is that with the smallest volume, also demonstrating a significant influence of the side groups upon the details of the structure. A possible explanation of these differences in terms of steric effects is proposed
