Current-induced phase transition in ballistic Ni nanocontacts
Local phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state in the region
of the ballistic Ni nanocontacts (NCs) has been experimentally observed. We
found that contact size reduction leads to an increase in the bias voltage at
which the local phase transition occurs. Presented theoretical interpretation
of this phenomena takes into the account the specificity of the local heating
of the ballistic NC and describes the electron's energy relaxation dependences
on the applied voltage. The experimental data are in good qualitative and
quantitative agreement with the theory proposed.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Ballistic and Diffuse Electron Transport in Nanocontacts of Magnetics
The transition from the ballistic electron transport to the diffuse one is
experimentally observed in the study of the magnetic phase transition in Ni
nanocontacts with different sizes. It is shown that the voltage needed
for Joule heating of the near-contact region to the critical temperature does
not depend on the contact size only in the diffuse mode. For the ballistic
contact it increases with decrease in the nanocontact size. The reduction of
the transport electron mean free path due to heating of NCs may result in
change of the electron transport mode from ballistic to diffusive one.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures accepted for the publication in JETPL

Compton Scattering by the Proton using a Large-Acceptance Arrangement
Compton scattering by the proton has been measured using the tagged-photon
facility at MAMI (Mainz) and the large-acceptance arrangement LARA. The new
data are interpreted in terms of dispersion theory based on the SAID-SM99K
parameterization of photo-meson amplitudes. It is found that two-pion exchange
in the t-channel is needed for a description of the data in the second
resonance region. The data are well represented if this channel is modeled by a
single pole with mass parameter m(sigma)=600 MeV. The asymptotic part of the
spin dependent amplitude is found to be well represented by pi-0-exchange in
the t-channel. A backward spin-polarizability of
gamma(pi)=(-37.1+-0.6(stat+syst)+-3.0(model))x10^{-4}fm^4 has been determined
from data of the first resonance region below 455 MeV. This value is in a good
agreement with predictions of dispersion relations and chiral pertubation
theory. From a subset of data between 280 and 360 MeV the resonance
pion-photoproduction amplitudes were evaluated leading to a E2/M1 multipole
ratio of the p-to-Delta radiative transition of EMR(340
MeV)=(-1.7+-0.4(stat+syst)+-0.2(model))%. It was found that this number is
dependent on the parameterization of photo-meson amplitudes. With the MAID2K
parameterization an E2/M1 multipole ratio of EMR(340
MeV)=(-2.0+-0.4(stat+syst)+-0.2(model))% is obtained
A light-fronts approach to electron-positron pair production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions
We perform a gauge-transformation on the time-dependent Dirac equation
describing the evolution of an electron in a heavy-ion collision to remove the
explicit dependence on the long-range part of the interaction. We solve, in an
ultra-relativistic limit, the gauged-transformed Dirac equation using
light-front variables and a light-fronts representation, obtaining
non-perturbative results for the free pair-creation amplitudes in the collider
frame. Our result reproduces the result of second-order perturbation theory in
the small charge limit while non-perturbative effects arise for realistic

Neutron skin of Pb from Coherent Pion Photoproduction
Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on Pb has been
extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the
Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam
facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the
measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron
distribution are found to be 6.70 fm and 0.55 fm respectively, corresponding to a neutron
skin thickness =0.15 fm.
The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin with an
electromagnetic probe and indicate the skin of Pb has a halo character.
The measurement provides valuable new constraints on both the structure of
nuclei and the equation of state for neutron-rich matter.Comment: 4 figures 5 pages. Version submitted to journal. Includes additional

Determination of the Dalitz plot parameter alpha for the decay eta->3pi^0 with the Crystal Ball at MAMI-B
A precise measurement of the Dalitz plot parameter, alpha, for the eta->3pi^0
decay is presented. The experiment was performed with the Crystal Ball and TAPS
large acceptance photon detectors at the tagged photon beam facility of the
MAMI-B electron accelerator in Mainz. High statistics of 1.8*10^6 eta->3pi^0
events were obtained, giving the result alpha = -0.032 +/- 0.002(stat) +/-

The helicity dependence of the reaction
has been measured for the first time in the photon energy range from 550 to 790
MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a
4-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a
longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are predominantly
sensitive to the resonance and are used to determine its

Measurement of the transverse target and beam-target asymmetries in meson photoproduction at MAMI
We present new data for the transverse target asymmetry T and the very first
data for the beam-target asymmetry F in the
reaction up to a center-of-mass energy of W=1.9 GeV. The data were obtained
with the Crystal-Ball/TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility
of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. All existing model predictions fail to reproduce
the new data indicating a significant impact on our understanding of the
underlying dynamics of meson photoproduction. The peculiar nodal
structure observed in existing T data close to threshold is not confirmed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PR
First measurement of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for Hydrogen from 200 to 800 MeV
A direct measurement of the helicity dependence of the total photoabsorption
cross section on the proton was carried out at MAMI (Mainz) in the energy range
200 < E_gamma < 800 MeV. The experiment used a 4 detection system, a
circularly polarized tagged photon beam and a frozen spin target.
The contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and to the forward
spin polarizability determined from the data are 226 \pm 5 (stat)\pm
12(sys) \mu b and -187 \pm 8 (stat)\pm 10(sys)10^{-6} fm^4, respectively, for
200 < E_\gamma < 800 MeV.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 table
A new measurement of the neutron detection efficiency for the NaI Crystal Ball detector
We report on a measurement of the neutron detection efficiency in NaI
crystals in the Crystal Ball detector obtained from a study of single p0
photoproduction on deuterium using the tagged photon beam at the Mainz
Microtron. The results were obtained up to a neutron energy of 400 MeV. They
are compared to previous measurements made more than 15 years ago at the pion
beam at the BNL AGS
