    Escape rate from a metastable state weakly interacting with a heat bath driven by an external noise

    Based on a system-reservoir model, where the reservoir is driven by an external stationary, Gaussian noise with arbitrary decaying correlation function, we study the escape rate from a metastable state in the energy diffusion regime. For the open system we derive the Fokker-Planck equation in the energy space and subsequently calculate the generalized non-Markovian escape rate from a metastable well in the energy diffusion domain. By considering the dynamics in a model cubic potential we show that the results obtained from numerical simulation are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. It has been also shown numerically that the well known turnover feature can be restored from our model.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

    Universality in Fluid Domain Coarsening: The case of vapor-liquid transition

    Domain growth during the kinetics of phase separation is studied following vapor-liquid transition in a single component Lennard-Jones fluid. Results are analyzed after appropriately mapping the continuum snapshots obtained from extensive molecular dynamics simulations to a simple cubic lattice. For near critical quench interconnected domain morphology is observed. A brief period of slow diffusive growth is followed by a linear viscous hydrodynamic growth that lasts for an extended period of time. This result is in contradiction with earlier inclusive reports of late time growth exponent 1/2 that questions the uniqueness of the non-equilibrium universality for liquid-liquid and vapor-liquid transitions.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Non-perturbative Landau gauge and infrared critical exponents in QCD

    We discuss Faddeev-Popov quantization at the non-perturbative level and show that Gribov's prescription of cutting off the functional integral at the Gribov horizon does not change the Schwinger-Dyson equations, but rather resolves an ambiguity in the solution of these equations. We note that Gribov's prescription is not exact, and we therefore turn to the method of stochastic quantization in its time-independent formulation, and recall the proof that it is correct at the non-perturbative level. The non-perturbative Landau gauge is derived as a limiting case, and it is found that it yields the Faddeev-Popov method in Landau gauge with a cut-off at the Gribov horizon, plus a novel term that corrects for over-counting of Gribov copies inside the Gribov horizon. Non-perturbative but truncated coupled Schwinger-Dyson equations for the gluon and ghost propagators D(k)D(k) and G(k)G(k) in Landau gauge are solved asymptotically in the infrared region. The infrared critical exponents or anomalous dimensions, defined by D(k)∼1/(k2)1+aDD(k) \sim 1/(k^2)^{1 + a_D} and G(k)∼1/(k2)1+aGG(k) \sim 1/(k^2)^{1 + a_G} are obtained in space-time dimensions d=2,3,4d = 2, 3, 4. Two possible solutions are obtained with the values, in d=4d = 4 dimensions, aG=1,aD=−2a_G = 1, a_D = -2, or aG=[93−(1201)1/2]/98≈0.595353,aD=−2aG a_G = [93 - (1201)^{1/2}]/98 \approx 0.595353, a_D = - 2a_G.Comment: 26 pages.     Theory of Adiabatic fluctuations : third-order noise

    We consider the response of a dynamical system driven by external adiabatic fluctuations. Based on the `adiabatic following approximation' we have made a systematic separation of time-scales to carry out an expansion in α∣μ∣−1\alpha |\mu|^{-1}, where α\alpha is the strength of fluctuations and ∣μ∣|\mu| is the damping rate. We show that probability distribution functions obey the differential equations of motion which contain third order terms (beyond the usual Fokker-Planck terms) leading to non-Gaussian noise. The problem of adiabatic fluctuations in velocity space which is the counterpart of Brownian motion for fast fluctuations, has been solved exactly. The characteristic function and the associated probability distribution function are shown to be of stable form. The linear dissipation leads to a steady state which is stable and the variances and higher moments are shown to be finite.Comment: Plain Latex, no figures, 28 pages; to appear in J. Phys.

    Influenza A Virus Hemagglutinin Antibody Escape Promotes Neuraminidase Antigenic Variation and Drug Resistance

    Drugs inhibiting the influenza A virus (IAV) neuraminidase (NA) are the cornerstone of anti-IAV chemotherapy and prophylaxis in man. Drug-resistant mutations in NA arise frequently in human isolates, limiting the therapeutic application of NA inhibitors. Here, we show that antibody-driven antigenic variation in one domain of the H1 hemagglutinin Sa site leads to compensatory mutations in NA, resulting in NA antigenic variation and acquisition of drug resistance. These findings indicate that influenza A virus resistance to NA inhibitors can potentially arise from antibody driven HA escape, confounding analysis of influenza NA evolution in nature

    Multiplicative cross-correlated noise induced escape rate from a metastable state

    We present an analytical framework to study the escape rate from a metastable state under the influence of two external multiplicative cross-correlated noise processes. Starting from a phenomenological stationary Langevin description with multiplicative noise processes, we have investigated the Kramers' theory for activated rate processes in a nonequilibrium open system (one-dimensional in nature) driven by two external cross-correlated noise processes which are Gaussian, stationary and delta correlated. Based on the Fokker-Planck description in phase space, we then derive the escape rate from a metastable state in the moderate to large friction limit to study the effect of degree of correlation on the same. By employing numerical simulation in the presence of external cross-correlated additive and multiplicative noises we check the validity of our analytical formalism for constant dissipation, which shows a satisfactory agreement between both the approaches for the specific choice of noise processes. It is evident both from analytical development and the corresponding numerical simulation that the enhancement of rate is possible by increasing the degree of correlation of the external fluctuations.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figures, RevTex

This study aimed to investigate the effects of A. austriaca flowers, which are frequently used in gynecological disorders, on the rat endometriosis model. The rat endometriosis model was used to evaluate the potential activity of the plant in endometriosis. The dried plant material was extracted with n-hexane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and methanol (MeOH), successively. The obtained extracts from A. austriaca flowers were applied to the rats. The adhesion scores, endometrial foci areas, and cytokine levels of the peritoneal fluids were measured on surgical induction of endometriosis in rats. The adhesion scores, endometriotic volume, and cytokine levels of the peritoneal fluids were reduced in the EtOAc, MeOH, and buserelin acetate-treated (reference) groups. The MeOH extract reduced the adhesion scores and endometrial foci areas from 3.1 to 1.1 (p \u3c 0.01) and from 86.4 to 40.5 (p \u3c 0.01), respectively and also the MeOH extract reduced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and interleukin (IL)-6 levels of the peritoneal fluids from 13.7 to 3.8 (p \u3c 0.01), from 28.4 to 16.3 (p \u3c 0.05) and from 50.2 to 24.3 (p \u3c 0.01), respectively. Therefore, isolation studies were conducted on the EtOAc and MeOH extracts. After the MeOH extract was fractionated using RP-18 column, the obtained subfractions were evaluated again on the endometriosis rat model. Subfractions A and C of the MeOH extract displayed statistically significant activity on the endometriosis rat model. Phytochemical investigation resulted in the isolation of 4-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one (1) from Fr. A and quercetin (2), apigenin-7-O-(3″-O-acetyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), apigenin-7-O-(6″-O-acetyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4), apigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), quercetin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6) from Fr. C. Moreover, β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7) was isolated from the EtOAc extract. As a conclusion, the MeOH extract obtained from A. austriaca flowers contributed to the regression of endometriosis. In addition, flavonoids and sterols of the plant were detected as the possible compounds responsible for the activity

    Aberrant phenotype in human endothelial cells of diabetic origin: Implications for saphenous vein graft failure?

    Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) confers increased risk of endothelial dysfunction, coronary heart disease, and vulnerability to vein graft failure after bypass grafting, despite glycaemic control. This study explored the concept that endothelial cells (EC) cultured from T2DM and nondiabetic (ND) patients are phenotypically and functionally distinct. Cultured human saphenous vein-(SV-) EC were compared between T2DM and ND patients in parallel. Proliferation, migration, and in vitro angiogenesis assays were performed; western blotting was used to quantify phosphorylation of Akt, ERK, and eNOS. The ability of diabetic stimuli (hyperglycaemia, TNF-α, and palmitate) to modulate angiogenic potential of ND-EC was also explored. T2DM-EC displayed reduced migration (30%) and angiogenesis (40%) compared with ND-EC and a modest, nonsignificant trend to reduced proliferation. Significant inhibition of Akt and eNOS, but not ERK phosphorylation, was observed in T2DM cells. Hyperglycaemia did not modify ND-EC function, but TNF-α and palmitate significantly reduced angiogenic capacity (by 27% and 43%, resp.), effects mimicked by Akt inhibition. Aberrancies of EC function may help to explain the increased risk of SV graft failure in T2DM patients. This study highlights the importance of other potentially contributing factors in addition to hyperglycaemia that may inflict injury and long-term dysfunction to the homeostatic capacity of the endothelium

    Feasibility of a combined camp approach for vector control together with active case detection of visceral leishmaniasis, post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, leprosy and malaria in Bangladesh, India and Nepal: an exploratory study

    Background We assessed the feasibility and results of active case detection (ACD) of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) and other febrile diseases as well as of bednet impregnation for vector control. Methods Fever camps were organized and analyzed in twelve VL endemic villages in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. VL, PKDL, tuberculosis, malaria and leprosy were screened among the febrile patients attending the camps, and existing bednets were impregnated with a slow release insecticide. Results Among the camp attendees one new VL case and two PKDL cases were detected in Bangladesh and one VL case in Nepal. Among suspected tuberculosis cases two were positive in India but none in the other countries. In India, two leprosy cases were found. No malaria cases were detected. Bednet impregnation coverage during fever camps was more than 80% in the three countries. Bednet impregnation led to a reduction of sandfly densities after 2 weeks by 86% and 32%, and after 4 weeks by 95% and 12% in India and Nepal respectively. The additional costs for the control programmes seem to be reasonable.
