Fluid passage-time calculation in large Markov models

    Get PDF
Recent developments in the analysis of large Markov models facilitate the fast approximation of transient characteristics of the underlying stochastic process. So-called fluid analysis makes it possible to consider previously intractable models whose underlying discrete state space grows exponentially as model components are added. In this work, we show how fluid approximation techniques may be used to extract passage-time measures from performance models. We focus on two types of passage measure: passage-times involving individual components; as well as passage-times which capture the time taken for a population of components to evolve. Specifically, we show that for models of sufficient scale, passage-time distributions can be well approximated by a deterministic fluid-derived passage-time measure. Where models are not of sufficient scale, we are able to generate approximate bounds for the entire cumulative distribution function of these passage-time random variables, using moment-based techniques. Finally, we show that for some passage-time measures involving individual components the cumulative distribution function can be directly approximated by fluid techniques

Sources, paths, and concepts for reduction of noise in the test section of the NASA Langley 4x7m wind tunnel

NASA is investigating the feasibility of modifying the 4x7m Wind Tunnel at the Langley Research Center to make it suitable for a variety of aeroacoustic testing applications, most notably model helicopter rotors. The amount of noise reduction required to meet NASA's goal for test section background noise was determined, the predominant sources and paths causing the background noise were quantified, and trade-off studies between schemes to reduce fan noise at the source and those to attenuate the sound generated in the circuit between the sources and the test section were carried out. An extensive data base is also presented on circuit sources and paths

Shoreline configuration and shoreline dynamics: A mesoscale analysis

The author has identified the following significant results. Atlantic coast barrier island shorelines are seldom straight, but rather sinuous. These shoreline curvatures range in size from cusps to capes. Significant relationships exist between the orientation of shoreline segments within the larger of these sinuous features and shoreline dynamics, with coefficients ranging up to .9. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (60 km) and the Outer Banks of North Carolina (130 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery (1:80,000) and high altitude aerial photography (1:120,000). Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes

The author has identified the following significant results. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (55 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery enlarged to 1:250,000 and 1:80,000. Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes from historical low altitude aerial photography spanning four decades

LANDSAT application of remote sensing to shoreline-form analysis

The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT imagery of the southern end of Assateague Island, Virginia, was enlarged to 1:80,000 and compared with high altitude (1:130,000) and low altitude (1:24,000) aerial photography in an attempt to quantify change in land area over a nine month period. Change in area and configuration was found with LANDSAT and low altitude photography. Change in configuration, but no change in area was found with high altitude photography. Due to tidal differences at time of image obtention and lack of baseline data, the accuracy of the LANDSAT measurements could not be determined. They were consistent with the measurements from the low altitude photography

Fluid-flow solutions in PEPA to the state space explosion problem

Achieving the appropriate performance requirements for computer-communication systems is as important as the correctness of the end-result. This is particularly difficult in the case of massively parallel computer systems such as the clusters of PCs behind the likes of Google and peer-to-peer filesharing networks such as Bittorrent. Measuring the performance of such systems using a mathematical model is invariably computationally intensive. Formal modelling techniques make possible the derivation of such performance measures but currently suffer from the state-space explosion problem, that is, models become intractably large even for systems of apparently modest complexity. This work develops a novel class of techniques aimed at addressing this problem by approximating a representation of massive state spaces as more computationally-tractable real variables (fluid-flow analysis)

ODE-based general moment approximations for PEPA

    No full text
In this paper we show how the powerful ODE-based fluid-analysis technique for the stochastic process algebra PEPA is an approximation to the first moments of the counting processes in question. For a large class of models this approximation has a particularly simple form and it is possible to make qualitative statements regarding how the quality of the approximation varies for different parameters. Furthermore, this particular point of view facilitates a natural generalisation to higher order moments. This allows modellers to approximate, for instance, the variance of the component counts. In particular, we show how systems of ODEs facilitating the approximation of arbitrary moments of the component counting processes can be naturally defined. The effectiveness of this generalisation is illustrated by comparing the results with those obtained through stochastic simulation for a particular case study
