    A novel photodiode array for astronomical spectroscopy

    Imaging arrays can be constructed from photodiode sensor elements using integrated circuit fabrication techniques. Such imaging arrays have proved to be useful in the field of observational astronomy, chiefly because of their linearity and good spectral response in the near infra red region. A photodiode array has been developed by the Plessey Co. Limited, in collaboration with the Royal Greenwich Observatory. This array incorporates certain novel techniques, including an "on-chip" charge amplifier on each element, and a multiplexing scheme that allows correlated double sampling and non-destructive readout. The array was originally designed to be used in an electron counting mode, installed in an electronographic tube. The Nuclear Instrumentation Group of Durham University has investigated the application of this array to direct optical imaging, in particular for astronomical spectroscopy. The characteristics of the array when used in the photon integration mode have been investigated, and measurements have been made of responsivity, thermal leakage, linearity, noise components, and other properties. A CAMAC based computer control system has been designed and constructed, and the required software developed, to operate the array as an observing instrument. The array has been used in observational tests at the Coudé spectrograph of the 30 inch telescope of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, and a quantity of spectral data has been obtained

    Navigation and Positioning Requirements for Marine Survey Operations

    The commercial Marine Survey industry, particularly in the North Sea and UK continental shelf areas, does not make as extensive use of satellite navigation systems as its investment in such might seem to show. This paper attempts to set out what are the requirements of the Marine Survey user, how these requirements are currently fulfilled, and what future satellite-based systems must provide in order to become competitive. Examples of typical survey operations are provided. The viewpoint is inevitably biased somewhat towards the requirements of the commercial survey contractor operating for the oil and gas industries, but as this is by far the largest sector of expenditure on navigation and positioning services in the UK Marine Survey sphere, the author feels that such bias is justified. This paper, then, examines not so much what the user’s expectations are from satellite navigation, but what his navigation requirements are in general, and what facilities satellite navigation must offer, and at what price, to provide a real service. In order to illustrate the requirements, let us first examine the systems currently in extensive use, with regard to cost, coverage and accuracy

    Development of a Reactor Model for Chemical Conversion of Lunar Regolith

    Lunar regolith will be used for a variety of purposes such as oxygen and propellant production and manufacture of various materials. The design and development of chemical conversion reactors for processing lunar regolith will require an understanding of the coupling among the chemical, mass and energy transport processes occurring at the length and time scales of the overall reactor with those occurring at the corresponding scales of the regolith particles. To this end, a coupled transport model is developed using, as an example, the reduction of ilmenite-containing regolith by a continuous flow of hydrogen in a flow-through reactor. The ilmenite conversion occurs on the surface and within the regolith particles. As the ilmenite reduction proceeds, the hydrogen in the reactor is consumed, and this, in turn, affects the conversion rate of the ilmenite in the particles. Several important quantities are identified as a result of the analysis. Reactor scale parameters include the void fraction (i.e., the fraction of the reactor volume not occupied by the regolith particles) and the residence time of hydrogen in the reactor. Particle scale quantities include the time for hydrogen to diffuse into the pores of the regolith particles and the chemical reaction time. The paper investigates the relationships between these quantities and their impact on the regolith conversion. Application of the model to various chemical reactor types, such as fluidized-bed, packed-bed, and rotary-bed configurations, are discussed

    New advances in the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI)

    Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) have increased in frequency throughout the world. In addition to an increase in frequency, recent CDI epidemics have been linked to a hypervirulent C. difficile strain resulting in greater severity of disease. Although most mild to moderate cases of CDI continue to respond to metronidazole or vancomycin, refractory and recurrent cases of CDI may require alternative therapies. This review provides a brief overview of CDI and summarizes studies involving alternative antibiotics, toxin binders, probiotics, and immunological therapies that can be considered for treatment of acute and recurrent CDI in severe and refractory situations

    Face processing in autism spectrum disorder re-evaluated through diffusion models

    Objective: Research using cognitive or perceptual tasks in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often relies on mean reaction time (RT) and accuracy derived from alternative-forced choice paradigms. However, these measures can confound differences in task-related processing efficiency with caution (i.e., preference for speed or accuracy). We examined whether computational models of decision-making allow these components to be isolated. Method: Using data from two face-processing tasks (face recognition and egocentric eye-gaze discrimination), we explored whether adolescents with ASD and wide-ranging intellectual ability differed from an age and IQ matched comparison group on model parameters that are thought to represent processing efficiency, caution, and perceptual encoding/motor output speed. Results: We found evidence that autistic adolescents had lower processing efficiency and caution but did not differ from nonautistic adolescents in the time devoted to perceptual encoding/motor output. These results were more consistent across tasks when we only analyzed participants with IQ above 85. Cross-task correlations suggested that processing efficiency and caution parameters were relatively stable across individuals and tasks. Furthermore, logistic classification with model parameters improved discrimination between individuals with and without ASD relative to classification using mean RT and accuracy. Finally, previous research has found that ADHD symptoms are associated with lower processing efficiency, and we observed a similar relationship in our sample, but only for autistic adolescents. Conclusions: Together, these results suggest that models of decision-making could provide both better discriminability between autistic and nonautistic individuals on cognitive tasks and also a more specific understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving these differences

    Dysregulated expression of Fau and MELK is associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer.

    INTRODUCTION: Programmed cell death through apoptosis plays an essential role in the hormone-regulated physiological turnover of mammary tissue. Failure of this active gene-dependent process is central both to the development of breast cancer and to the appearance of the therapy-resistant cancer cells that produce clinical relapse. Functional expression cloning in two independent laboratories has identified Finkel-Biskis-Reilly murine sarcoma virus-associated ubiquitously expressed gene (Fau) as a novel apoptosis regulator and candidate tumour suppressor. Fau modifies apoptosis-controller Bcl-G, which is also a key target for candidate oncoprotein maternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase (MELK). METHODS: We have used RNA interference to downregulate Fau and Bcl-G expression, both simultaneously and independently, in breast cancer cells in vitro to determine the importance of their roles in apoptosis. Expression of Fau, Bcl-G and MELK was measured by quantitative RT-PCR in breast cancer tissue and in matched breast epithelial tissue from the same patients. Expression data of these genes obtained using microarrays from a separate group of patients were related to patient survival in Kaplan-Meier analyses. RESULTS: siRNA-mediated downregulation of either Fau or Bcl-G expression inhibited apoptosis, and the inhibition produced by combining the two siRNAs was consistent with control of Bcl-G by Fau. Fau expression is significantly reduced in breast cancer tissue and this reduction is associated with poor patient survival, as predicted for a candidate breast cancer tumour suppressor. In addition, MELK expression is increased in breast cancer tissue and this increase is also associated with poor patient survival, as predicted for a candidate oncogene. Bcl-G expression is reduced in breast cancer tissue but decreased Bcl-G expression showed no correlation with survival, indicating that the most important factors controlling Bcl-G activity are post-translational modification (by Fau and MELK) rather than the rate of transcription of Bcl-G itself. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of in vitro functional studies with the analysis of gene expression in clinical breast cancer samples indicates that three functionally interconnected genes, Fau, Bcl-G and MELK, are crucially important in breast cancer and identifies them as attractive targets for improvements in breast cancer risk prediction, prognosis and therapy.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'.
