    Deconfinement and Thermodynamics in 5D Holographic Models of QCD

    We review 5D holographic approaches to finite temperature QCD. Thermodynamic properties of the "hard-wall" and the "soft-wall" models are derived.     Effects of Pre-School Teacher's Self-Esteem on Teacher Attitudes

    AbstractIn this study the effects of pre-school teacher's self-esteem on teacher attitudes was analyzed. The data collection tools used in the study were the Teacher Attitude Scale for Pre-School Teachers developed by Bilgin (1995) and the Self-Esteem Scale developed by Arıcak (1999). The tools were completed by 307 pre-school teachers in the second half of 2007-2008 academic year. It was studied whether a meaningful difference was caused in the subdimensions of the two tools by the variables of age, attending graduate school, being satisfied with income, marital status, intentional choice of the teaching profession, being content with the profession, and having in-service training. In order to test this arithmetic means, one-way ANOVA, independent groups t-test and Pearson Moments Correlation were used. All statistical analyzes in the study were made by using the SPSS package program. The level of significance was set at minimum .05. The results showed a weak positive relationship between pre-school teacher's self-esteem and teacher attitudes

    On the YM and QCD spectra from five dimensional strings

    We consider a non-critical five dimensional string setup which could provide a dual description of QCD in the limit of large number of colors and flavors. The model corresponds to N_c color D3-branes and N_f D4/anti D4-brane pairs supporting flavor degrees of freedom. The matching of the string model spectrum with the dual field theory one is considered. We discuss the consequences of the possible matching of the gravity modes with the light glueballs and the interpretation of the brane spectrum in Yang-Mills and QCD.Comment: 21 pages; V2: added corrections and references to match the published versio

    Holography and Thermodynamics of 5D Dilaton-gravity

    The asymptotically-logarithmically-AdS black-hole solutions of 5D dilaton gravity with a monotonic dilaton potential are analyzed in detail. Such theories are holographically very close to pure Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. The existence and uniqueness of black-hole solutions is shown. It is also shown that a Hawking-Page transition exists at finite temperature if and only if the potential corresponds to a confining theory. The physics of the transition matches in detail with that of deconfinement of the Yang-Mills theory. The high-temperature phase asymptotes to a free gluon gas at high temperature matching the expected behavior from asymptotic freedom. The thermal gluon condensate is calculated and shown to be crucial for the existence of a non-trivial deconfining transition.     The Penrose limit of AdS*S space and holography

    In the Penrose limit, AdS*S space turns into a Cahen-Wallach (CW) space whose Killing vectors satisfy a Heisenberg algebra. This algebra is mapped onto the holographic screen on the boundary of AdS. I show that the Heisenberg algebra on the boundary of AdS may be obtained directly from the CW space by appropriately constraining the states defined on it. The transformations generated by the constraint are similar to gauge transformations. The ``holographic screen'' on the CW space is thus obtained as a ``gauge-fixing'' condition.Comment: 12 pages, improved discussion, to appear in Mod. Phys. Lett.

    Decay Modes of Unstable Strings in Plane-Wave String Field Theory

    The cubic interaction vertex of light-cone string field theory in the plane-wave background has a simple effective form when considering states with only bosonic excitations. This simple effective interaction vertex is used in this paper to calculate the three string interaction matrix elements for states of arbitrary bosonic excitation and these results are used to examine certain decay modes on the mass-shell. It is shown that the matrix elements of one string to two string decays involving only bosonic excitations will vanish to all orders in 1/mu on the mass-shell when the number of excitations on the initial string is less than or equal to two, but in general will not vanish when the number of excitations is greater than two. Also, a truncated calculation of the mass-shell matrix elements for one string to three string decays of two excitation states is performed and suggests that these matrix elements do not vanish on the mass-shell.     Application of data mining techniques to protein-protein interaction prediction

    Protein-protein interactions are key to understanding biological processes and disease mechanisms in organisms. There is a vast amount of data on proteins waiting to be explored. In this paper, we describe application of data mining techniques, namely association rule mining and ID3 classification, to the problem of predicting protein-protein interactions. We have combined available interaction data and protein domain decomposition data to infer new interactions. Preliminary results show that our approach helps us find plausible rules to understand biological processes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003

    Improved Holographic QCD

    We provide a review to holographic models based on Einstein-dilaton gravity with a potential in 5 dimensions. Such theories, for a judicious choice of potential are very close to the physics of large-N YM theory both at zero and finite temperature. The zero temperature glueball spectra as well as their finite temperature thermodynamic functions compare well with lattice data. The model can be used to calculate transport coefficients, like bulk viscosity, the drag force and jet quenching parameters, relevant for the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma.Comment: LatEX, 65 pages, 28 figures, 9 Tables.
