    Children’s tolerance of word-form variation

    How much morphological variation can children tolerate when identifying familiar words? This is an important question in the context of the acquisition of richly inflected languages where identical word forms occur far less frequently than in English. To address this question, we compared children’s (N = 96, mean age 4;1, range 2;11–5;1) and adults’ (N = 96, mean age 21 years) tolerance of word-onset modifications (e.g., for stug: wug and wastug) and pseudoaffixes (e.g., kostug and stugko) in a labelextension task. Word-form modifications were repeated within each experiment to establish productive inflectional patterns. In two experiments, children and adults exhibited similar strategies: they were more tolerant of prefixes (wastug) than substitutions of initial consonants (wug), and more tolerant of suffixes (stugko) than prefixes (kostug). The findings point to word-learning strategies as being flexible and adaptive to morphological patterns in languages

    Catalytic hollow fiber membranes prepared using layer-by-layer adsorption of polyelectrolytes and metal nanoparticles

    Immobilization of metalnanoparticles in hollowfibermembranes via alternating adsorption of polyelectrolytes and negatively charged Au nanoparticles yields catalytic reactors with high surface areas. SEM images show that this technique deposits a high density of unaggregated metalnanoparticles both on the surfaces and in the pores of the hollowfibers. Catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol with NaBH4, which can be easily monitored by UV–vis spectrophotometry, demonstrates that the nanoparticles in the hollowfibermembrane are highly catalytically active. In a single pass through the membrane, >99% of the 4-nitrophenol is reduced to 4-aminophenol, but this conversion decreases over time. The conversion decline may stem from catalyst fouling caused by by-products of 4-aminophenol oxidation

    A detailed study of the photo-injection annealing of thermally diffused InP solar cells

    A detailed analysis of the annealing of thermally diffused InP solar cells fabricated by the Nippon Mining Co. is presented. The cells were irradiated with 1 MeV electrons, and the induced degradation is measured using deep level transient spectroscopy and low temperature (86 K) IV measurements. Clear recovery of the photovoltaic parameters is observed during low temperature (T is less than 300 K) solar illuminations (1 sun, AMO) with further recovery at higher temperatures (300 less than T less than 500 K). For example, the output of a cell which was irradiated up to a fluence of 1 x 10(exp 16) cm(sup -2) was observed to recover to within 5 percent of the pre-irradiation output. An apparent correlation between the recovery of I(sub sc) and the annealing of the H4 defect and of the minority carrier trapping centers is observed. An apparent correlation between the recovery of VO, and the annealing of the H5 defect is also observed. These apparent correlations are used to develop a possible model for the mechanism of the recovery of the solar cells

    The Role of Organizational Capacity in Student-Athlete Development

    In-depth interviews were conducted with the life skills coordinators of 9 of 21 institutions identified as being “dedicated” to service (Andrassy & Bruening, 2011). As a result of service being one portion of CHAMPS/Life Skills programming, we expanded our investigation to include all aspects of this student development program. In particular, we focused our inquiry on organizational capacity and its role in student involvement. Findings indicate these ‘dedicated’ athletic departments were characterized by strong organizational capacity for engaging student-athletes in meaningful service efforts. The critical role of coaches and mutual values among internal stakeholders emerged as the primary strengths of department’s human resources capacity. Despite the limited financial capacity, departments were able to creatively secure some funding for development programs. The ability to leverage external relationships, an organizational culture promoting participative decision-making and student-athlete development, and on-going efforts to improve service and life skills opportunities for student-athletes indicated strong structural capacity

    Development and Validation of Makeup and Sexualized Clothing Questionnaires

    Background: Body acceptance programs on college campuses indicated that collegiate women often report feeling pressure to dress in a sexualized manner, and use makeup to enhance beauty. Currently, no quantitative measures exist to assess attitudes and daily behaviors that may arise in response to perceived pressure to wear makeup or dress in a provocative manner. The goal of the current studies was to develop brief self-report questionnaires aimed at assessing makeup and sexualized clothing use and attitudes in young women. Methods: An exploratory factor analysis in a sample of 403 undergraduate women was used in Study 1 to create items to measure the pressure women feel to wear makeup and sexualized clothing. A confirmatory factor analysis (N = 153) was used in Study 2 to confirm the factor structure found in Study 1. An incremental validity analysis was also conducted in Study 2. Across both studies, participants completed online questionnaires. Results: In Study 1, items were developed for two questionnaires to assess perceived pressure to wear makeup and discomfort when not wearing makeup, and perceived pressure to wear sexualized clothing, and body image concerns with regards to sexualized clothing. The exploratory factor analyses revealed Unconfident and Unease scales for the Makeup Questionnaire (MUQ) and Body Dissatisfaction and Pressure scales for the Sexualized Clothing Questionnaire (SCQ). In Study 2, the confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the factor structure for the MUQ and SCQ. The incremental validity analysis revealed that these measures can be used to predict self-objectification and shape and weight concern in women. Conclusion: These studies provide preliminary support for the factor structure of two novel questionnaires aimed at assessing perceived pressure to wear makeup and sexualized clothing

    Physical Activity and Screen Time in Adolescents and Their Nominated Friends

    Background: The social transmission of obesity has been reported in adolescent social networks. However, the behavioral antecedents to obesity (physical activity [PA], screen time, and diet) are the factors that would actually be transmitted through these networks. To date, little is known about the social influences affecting an individual adolescent’s PA and screen time behaviors. Purpose: To determine the associations between an adolescent’s PA and screen time and his/her nominated friends’ PA and screen time. Methods: Data were obtained from EAT 2010 (Eating and Activity among Teens), a large cross-sectional study (n=2,126) conducted in 20 middle schools and high schools in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, USA during the 2009-2010 academic year. Each participant (Ego) nominated up to six friends (Alters) from a school roster and data from those friends was also obtained as part of the school-based data collection procedures. PA and screen time were assessed with previously used and validated questionnaires. Generalized estimating equation models, stratified by gender, were used to assess associations between adolescents’ PA and screen time and their friends’ PA and screen time. Results: Females’ PA was associated with their male and female friends’ PA, including their female best friends (all p\u3c0.05). Males’ PA was associated with their female friends’ PA (p\u3c0.03). Females’ screen time was associated with their male and female friends’ screen time (p\u3c0.03), but not with their best friends. Males’ screen time was only associated with their female friends’ screen time (p=0.04). Conclusions: The associations between individual and friend PA and screen time, especially in females, indicate a need to consider these social relationships when investigating weight-related behaviors in adolescents. Longitudinal data using validated measures of PA and screen time, and analyzed using sophisticated modeling techniques are needed to better understand social influences on adolescent weight-related behaviors and inform future intervention efforts

    Single copy shRNA configuration for ubiquitous gene knockdown in mice

    RNA interference through the expression of small hairpin RNA (shRNA) molecules has become a very promising tool in reverse mouse genetics as it may allow inexpensive and rapid gene function analysis in vivo. However, the prerequisites for ubiquitous and reproducible shRNA expression are not well defined. Here we show that a single copy shRNA-transgene can mediate body-wide gene silencing in mice when inserted in a defined locus of the genome. The most commonly used promoters for shRNA expression, H1 and U6, showed a comparably broad activity in this configuration. Taken together, the results define a novel approach for efficient interference with expression of defined genes in vivo. Moreover, we provide a rapid strategy for the production of gene knockdown mice combining recombinase mediated cassette exchange and tetraploid blastocyst complementation approaches

    Efficient Code Generation in a Region-based Dynamic Binary Translator

    Region-based JIT compilation operates on translation units comprising multiple basic blocks and, possibly cyclic or conditional, control flow between these. It promises to reconcile aggressive code optimisation and low compilation latency in performance-critical dynamic binary translators. Whilst various region selection schemes and isolated code optimisation techniques have been investigated it remains unclear how to best exploit such regions for efficient code generation. Complex interactions with indirect branch tables and translation caches can have adverse effects on performance if not considered carefully. In this paper we present a complete code generation strategy for a region-based dynamic binary translator, which exploits branch type and control flow profiling information to improve code quality for the common case. We demonstrate that using our code generation strategy a competitive region-based dynamic compiler can be built on top of the LLVM JIT compilation framework. For the ARM-V5T target ISA and SPEC CPU 2006 benchmarks we achieve execution rates of, on average, 867 MIPS and up to 1323 MIPS on a standard X86 host machine, outperforming state-of-the-art QEMU-ARM by delivering a speedup of 264%
