Applying series braking resistors to improve the stability of low inertia synchronous generators
Widely held concerns over the environmental impact of emissions from large fossil fuelled generating plants are serving to promote the connection of renewable or sustainable generation onto distribution networks. Many such generators are synchronous machines with low values of inertia, and thus possess short critical clearance times to avoid the onset of transient instability. With fault clearance times of up to 1s occurring in distribution networks, there is the potential for a growing problem as distributed generation makes up a larger proportion of installed capacity. Discourse and identity in a corpus of lesbian erotica
This article uses corpus linguistic methodologies to explore representations of lesbian desires and identities in a corpus of lesbian erotica from the 1980s and 1990s. We provide a critical examination of the ways in which “lesbian gender,” power, and desire are represented, (re-)produced, and enacted, often in ways that challenge hegemonic discourses of gender and sexuality. By examining word frequencies and collocations, we critically analyze some of the themes, processes, and patterns of representation in the texts. Although rooted in linguistics, we hope this article provides an accessible, interdisciplinary, and timely contribution toward developing understandings of discursive practices surrounding gender and sexuality
Staying in the science stream: patterns of participation in A-level science subjects in the UK.
This paper describes patterns of participation and attainment in A-level physics, chemistry and biology from 1961 to 2009. The A-level has long been seen as an important gateway qualification for higher level study, particularly in the sciences. This long term overview examines how recruitment to these three subjects has changed in the context of numerous policies and initiatives that seek to retain more young people in the sciences. The results show that recruitment to the pure sciences has stagnated, general trends have hardly varied and the track record of government policy in influencing change is not strong. There is no evidence for increasing achievement gaps between the sexes at A-level and even national policy requiring that all young people study science up to the age of 16 appears to have had little impact on recruitment at this leve
Evidence of an advantage in visuo-spatial memory for bilingual compared to monolingual speakers
Previous research has indicated that bilinguals outperform monolinguals in cognitive tasks involving spatial working memory. The present study examines evidence for this claim using a different and arguably more ecologically valid method (the change blindness task). Bilingual and monolingual participants were presented with two versions of the same scenes and required to press a key as soon as they identified the alteration. They also completed the word and alpha span tasks, and the Corsi blocks task. The results in the change blindness task, controlled for group differences in non-verbal reasoning, indicated that bilinguals were faster and more accurate than monolinguals at detecting visual changes. Similar group differences were found on the Corsi block task. Unlike previous findings, no group differences were found on the verbal memory tasks. The results are discussed with reference to mechanisms of cognitive control as a locus of transfer between bilingualism and spatial working memory tasks
An Atom Michelson Interferometer on a Chip Using a Bose-Einstein Condensate
An atom Michelson interferometer is implemented on an "atom chip." The chip
uses lithographically patterned conductors and external magnetic fields to
produce and guide a Bose-Einstein condensate. Splitting, reflecting, and
recombining of condensate atoms are achieved by a standing-wave light field
having a wave vector aligned along the atom waveguide. A differential phase
shift between the two arms of the interferometer is introduced by either a
magnetic-field gradient or with an initial condensate velocity. Interference
contrast is still observable at 20% with atom propagation time of 10 ms
Conformational Preferences of cis-1,3-Cyclopentanedicarboxylic Acid and Its Salts by ^1H NMR Spectroscopy: Energetics of Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonds in DMSO
The conformational populations of cis-1,3-
cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid (1) and its mono- and dianion
were established in DMSO solution by comparing the vicinal
proton−proton coupling constants (^3JHH) obtained in solution to their theoretical counterparts. Geometries used for ^3JHH theoretical estimation (using Karplus-type equations) were obtained from optimized structures at the B3LYP/6-31G-(2d,2p) level. The diacid (1) adopted many conformations, whereas the ionized species (1A mono- and 1B dianion) assumed single conformations. A downfield chemical shift of 19.45 ppm (Δδ_H = 7.43 ppm) observed at −60 °C was indicative of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in 1A, which was later corroborated by determining the ratio of the first (K_1) to the second (K_2) ionization constants. K_1/K_2 in DMSO (1.3 × 10^7) was significantly larger than the value in water (2 × 10). In addition, K_1/K_E = 200 (where K_E is the acidity constant of the monomethylester of 1) was greater than the intramolecular hydrogen bonding threshold value of 2. The calculated intramolecular hydrogen bond strength of 1A was ∼3.1 kcal mol^(−1), which is ∼2.7 kcal mol^(−1) more stable than the values for cis-
1,3-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (2A). Thus, the relative energies of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the monoanions 1A and 2A suggests that 1,3-diaxial conformers are more favored for cyclopentane than for cyclohexane rings
Abnormalities in substance P neurokinin-1 receptor binding in key brainstem nuclei in sudden infant death syndrome related to prematurity and sex
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) involves failure of arousal to potentially life threatening events, including hypoxia, during sleep. While neuronal dysfunction and abnormalities in neurotransmitter systems within the medulla oblongata have been implicated, the specific pathways associated with autonomic and cardiorespiratory failure are unknown. The neuropeptide substance P (SP) and its tachykinin neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R) have been shown to play an integral role in the modulation of homeostatic function in the medulla, including regulation of respiratory rhythm generation, integration of cardiovascular control, and modulation of the baroreceptor reflex and mediation of the chemoreceptor reflex in response to hypoxia. Abnormalities in SP neurotransmission may therefore result in autonomic dysfunction during sleep and contribute to SIDS deaths. [125I] Bolton Hunter SP autoradiography was used to map the distribution and density of the SP, NK1R to 13 specific nuclei intimately related to cardiorespiratory function and autonomic control in the human infant medulla of 55 SIDS and 21 control (non-SIDS) infants. Compared to controls, SIDS cases exhibited a differential, abnormal developmental profile of the SP/NK1R system in the medulla. Furthermore the study revealed significantly decreased NK1R binding within key medullary nuclei in SIDS cases, principally in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) and all three subdivisions of the inferior portion of the olivo-cerebellar complex; the principal inferior olivary complex (PIO), medial accessory olive (MAO) and dorsal accessory olive (DAO). Altered NK1R binding was significantly influenced by prematurity and male sex, which may explain the increased risk of SIDS in premature and male infants. Abnormal NK1R binding in these medullary nuclei may contribute to the defective interaction of critical medullary mechanisms with cerebellar sites, resulting in an inability of a SIDS infant to illicit appropriate respiratory and motor responses to life threatening challenges during sleep. These observations support the concept that abnormalities in a multi-neurotransmitter network within key nuclei of the medullary homeostatic system may underlie the pathogenesis of a subset of SIDS cases.Fiona M. Potential pitfalls when denoising resting state fMRI data using nuisance regression
In resting state fMRI, it is necessary to remove signal variance associated with noise sources, leaving cleaned fMRI time-series that more accurately reflect the underlying intrinsic brain fluctuations of interest. This is commonly achieved through nuisance regression, in which the fit is calculated of a noise model of head motion and physiological processes to the fMRI data in a General Linear Model, and the “cleaned” residuals of this fit are used in further analysis. We examine the statistical assumptions and requirements of the General Linear Model, and whether these are met during nuisance regression of resting state fMRI data. Using toy examples and real data we show how pre-whitening, temporal filtering and temporal shifting of regressors impact model fit. Based on our own observations, existing literature, and statistical theory, we make the following recommendations when employing nuisance regression: pre-whitening should be applied to achieve valid statistical inference of the noise model fit parameters; temporal filtering should be incorporated into the noise model to best account for changes in degrees of freedom; temporal shifting of regressors, although merited, should be achieved via optimisation and validation of a single temporal shift. We encourage all readers to make simple, practical changes to their fMRI denoising pipeline, and to regularly assess the appropriateness of the noise model used. By negotiating the potential pitfalls described in this paper, and by clearly reporting the details of nuisance regression in future manuscripts, we hope that the field will achieve more accurate and precise noise models for cleaning the resting state fMRI time-series
