    An account of activities and data gathered in the Room Temperature Stretch Forming of One-third Scale External Tank Bulkhead Gores for space shuttle study, and a tooling design and production cost study are reported. The following study phases are described: (1) the stretch forming of three approximately one-third scale external tank dome gores from single sheets of 2219-T37 aluminum alloy; (2) the designing of a full scale production die, including a determination of tooling requirements; and (3) the determination of cost per gore at the required production rates, including manufacturing, packaging, and shipping

    Projective Ring Line Encompassing Two-Qubits

    The projective line over the (non-commutative) ring of two-by-two matrices with coefficients in GF(2) is found to fully accommodate the algebra of 15 operators - generalized Pauli matrices - characterizing two-qubit systems. The relevant sub-configuration consists of 15 points each of which is either simultaneously distant or simultaneously neighbor to (any) two given distant points of the line. The operators can be identified with the points in such a one-to-one manner that their commutation relations are exactly reproduced by the underlying geometry of the points, with the ring geometrical notions of neighbor/distant answering, respectively, to the operational ones of commuting/non-commuting. This remarkable configuration can be viewed in two principally different ways accounting, respectively, for the basic 9+6 and 10+5 factorizations of the algebra of the observables. First, as a disjoint union of the projective line over GF(2) x GF(2) (the "Mermin" part) and two lines over GF(4) passing through the two selected points, the latter omitted. Second, as the generalized quadrangle of order two, with its ovoids and/or spreads standing for (maximum) sets of five mutually non-commuting operators and/or groups of five maximally commuting subsets of three operators each.     Mid-IR Hyperspectral Imaging of Laminar Flames for 2-D Scalar Values

    This work presents a new emission-based measurement which permits quantification of two-dimensional scalar distributions in laminar flames. A Michelson-based Fourier-transform spectrometer coupled to a mid-infrared camera (1.5 μm to 5.5 μm) obtained 256 × 128pixel hyperspectral flame images at high spectral (δν̃ = 0.75cm−1) and spatial (0.52 mm) resolutions. The measurements revealed line and band emission from H2O, CO2, and CO. Measurements were collected from a well-characterized partially-premixed ethylene (C2H4) flame produced on a Hencken burner at equivalence ratios, Φ, of 0.8, 0.9, 1.1, and 1.3. After describing the instrument and novel calibration methodology, analysis of the flames is presented. A single-layer, line-by-line radiative transfer model is used to retrieve path-averaged temperature, H2O, CO2 and CO column densities from emission spectra between 2.3 μm to 5.1 μm. The radiative transfer model uses line intensities from the latest HITEMP and CDSD-4000 spectroscopic databases. For the Φ = 1.1 flame, the spectrally estimated temperature for a single pixel 10 mm above burner center was T = (2318 ± 19)K, and agrees favorably with recently reported laser absorption measurements, T = (2348 ± 115)K, and a NASA CEA equilibrium calculation, T = 2389K. Near the base of the flame, absolute concentrations can be estimated, and H2O, CO2, and CO concentrations of (12.5 ± 1.7) %, (10.1 ± 1.0) %, and (3.8 ± 0.3) %, respectively, compared favorably with the corresponding CEA values of 12.8%, 9.9% and 4.1%. Spectrally-estimated temperatures and concentrations at the other equivalence ratios were in similar agreement with measurements and equilibrium calculations. 2-D temperature and species column density maps underscore the Φ-dependent chemical composition of the flames. The reported uncertainties are 95% confidence intervals and include both statistical fit errors and the propagation of systematic calibration errors using a Monte Carlo approach. Systematic errors could warrant a factor of two increase in reported uncertainties. This work helps to establish IFTS as a valuable combustion diagnostic tool

    Projective Ring Line of a Specific Qudit

    A very particular connection between the commutation relations of the elements of the generalized Pauli group of a dd-dimensional qudit, dd being a product of distinct primes, and the structure of the projective line over the (modular) ring \bZ_{d} is established, where the integer exponents of the generating shift (XX) and clock (ZZ) operators are associated with submodules of \bZ^{2}_{d}. Under this correspondence, the set of operators commuting with a given one -- a perp-set -- represents a \bZ_{d}-submodule of \bZ^{2}_{d}. A crucial novel feature here is that the operators are also represented by {\it non}-admissible pairs of \bZ^{2}_{d}. This additional degree of freedom makes it possible to view any perp-set as a {\it set-theoretic} union of the corresponding points of the associated projective line

    DBEndo: a web-based endodontic case management tool

    BACKGROUND: The success of endodontic treatment depends-among many other factors-on good documentation. Paper-based records are often difficult to read or incomplete and commercially available tools focus on billing. An electronic record captures the state of treatment at all times. Databases are a common tool in everyday life. RESULTS: Here, we present a database created for the Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin, Germany. Through consistent digital documentation, data analytics of patients, root canal anatomies, instrumentation techniques, efficacy of chemical disinfection, root filling techniques, and corresponding recall success rates, which needed extensive research before, are now easy to perform. Tables and even graphics and data analystics are only one click away and can be exported to other programs. CONCLUSIONS: DBEndo is a database to store and visualise internally, as well as to share endodontic cases online. For academic use we provide the database including all forms and some anonymous data for free at: http://dbendo.charite.de . Through easy import and export of the data, the system is open and flexible

    On Invariant Notions of Segre Varieties in Binary Projective Spaces

    Invariant notions of a class of Segre varieties \Segrem(2) of PG(2^m - 1, 2) that are direct products of mm copies of PG(1, 2), mm being any positive integer, are established and studied. We first demonstrate that there exists a hyperbolic quadric that contains \Segrem(2) and is invariant under its projective stabiliser group \Stab{m}{2}. By embedding PG(2^m - 1, 2) into \PG(2^m - 1, 4), a basis of the latter space is constructed that is invariant under \Stab{m}{2} as well. Such a basis can be split into two subsets whose spans are either real or complex-conjugate subspaces according as mm is even or odd. In the latter case, these spans can, in addition, be viewed as indicator sets of a \Stab{m}{2}-invariant geometric spread of lines of PG(2^m - 1, 2). This spread is also related with a \Stab{m}{2}-invariant non-singular Hermitian variety. The case m=3m=3 is examined in detail to illustrate the theory. Here, the lines of the invariant spread are found to fall into four distinct orbits under \Stab{3}{2}, while the points of PG(7, 2) form five orbits.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure; v2 - version accepted in Designs, Codes and Cryptograph

    Performance of prototype BTeV silicon pixel detectors in a high energy pion beam

    The silicon pixel vertex detector is a key element of the BTeV spectrometer. Sensors bump-bonded to prototype front-end devices were tested in a high energy pion beam at Fermilab. The spatial resolution and occupancies as a function of the pion incident angle were measured for various sensor-readout combinations. The data are compared with predictions from our Monte Carlo simulation and very good agreement is found.Comment: 24 pages, 20 figure

    A novel kcna2 variant in a patient with non-progressive congenital ataxia and epilepsy: Functional characterization and sensitivity to 4-aminopyridine

    Kv1.2 channels, encoded by the KCNA2 gene, are localized in the central and peripheral nervous system, where they regulate neuronal excitability. Recently, heterozygous mutations in KCNA2 have been associated with a spectrum of symptoms extending from epileptic encephalopathy, intellectual disability, and cerebellar ataxia. Patients are treated with a combination of antiepileptic drugs and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) has been recently trialed in specific cases. We identified a novel variant in KCNA2, E236K, in a Serbian proband with non-progressive congenital ataxia and early onset epilepsy, treated with sodium valproate. To ascertain the pathogenicity of E236K mutation and to verify its sensitivity to 4-AP, we transfected HEK 293 cells with Kv1.2 WT or E236K cDNAs and recorded potassium currents through the whole-cell patchclamp. In silico analysis supported the electrophysiological data. E236K channels showed voltagedependent activation shifted towards negative potentials and slower kinetics of deactivation and activation compared with Kv1.2 WT. Heteromeric Kv1.2 WT+E236K channels, resembling the condition of the heterozygous patient, confirmed a mixed gain-and loss-of-function (GoF/LoF) biophysical phenotype. 4-AP inhibited both Kv1.2 and E236K channels with similar potency. Homology modeling studies of mutant channels suggested a reduced interaction between the residue K236 in the S2 segment and the gating charges at S4. Overall, the biophysical phenotype of E236K channels correlates with the mild end of the clinical spectrum reported in patients with GoF/LoF defects. The response to 4-AP corroborates existing evidence that KCNA2-disorders could benefit from variant-tailored therapeutic approaches, based on functional studies

    Functional characterization of two novel mutations in scn5a associated with brugada syndrome identified in Italian patients

    Background. Brugada syndrome (BrS) is an autosomal dominantly inherited cardiac disease characterized by “coved type” ST-segment elevation in the right precordial leads, high susceptibility to ventricular arrhythmia and a family history of sudden cardiac death. The SCN5A gene, encoding for the cardiac voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.5, accounts for ~20–30% of BrS cases and is considered clinically relevant. Methods. Here, we describe the clinical findings of two Italian families affected by BrS and provide the functional characterization of two novel SCN5A mutations, the missense variant Pro1310Leu and the in-frame insertion Gly1687_Ile1688insGlyArg. Results. Despite being clinically different, both patients have a family history of sudden cardiac death and had history of arrhythmic events. The Pro1310Leu mutation significantly reduced peak sodium current density without affecting channel membrane localization. Changes in the gating properties of expressed Pro1310Leu channel likely account for the loss-of-function phenotype. On the other hand, Gly1687_Ile1688insGlyArg channel, identified in a female patient, yielded a nearly undetectable sodium current. Following mexiletine incubation, the Gly1687_Ile1688insGlyArg channel showed detectable, albeit very small, currents and biophysical properties similar to those of the Nav1.5 wild-type channel. Conclusions. Overall, our results suggest that the degree of loss-of-function shown by the two Nav1.5 mutant channels correlates with the aggressive clinical phenotype of the two probands. This genotype-phenotype correlation is fundamental to set out appropriate therapeutical intervention
