The objectives include evaluation of the operational coordination required between the orbiter pilot and the space station manipulator operator, evaluation of the locations and required number of closed-circuit television cameras, and evaluation of the orbiter grapple fixture clearance geometry.     Sub-au imaging of water vapour clouds around four Asymptotic Giant Branch stars

    We present MERLIN maps of the 22-GHz H2O masers around four low-mass late-type stars (IK Tau U Ori, RT Vir and U Her), made with an angular resolution of ~ 15 milliarcsec and a velocity resolution of 0.1 km s-1. The H2O masers are found in thick expanding shells with inner radii ~ 6 to 16 au and outer radii four times larger. The expansion velocity increases radially through the H2O maser regions, with logarithmic velocity gradients of 0.5--0.9. IK Tau and RT Vir have well-filled H2O maser shells with a spatial offset between the near and far sides of the shell, which suggests that the masers are distributed in oblate spheroids inclined to the line of sight. U Ori and U Her have elongated poorly-filled shells with indications that the masers at the inner edge have been compressed by shocks; these stars also show OH maser flares. MERLIN resolves individual maser clouds, which have diameters of 2 -- 4 au and filling factors of only ~ 0.01 with respect to the whole H2O maser shells. The CSE velocity structure gives additional evidence the maser clouds are density bounded. Masing clouds can be identified over a similar timescale to their sound crossing time (~2 yr) but not longer. The sizes and observed lifetimes of these clouds are an order of magnitude smaller than those around red supergiants, similar to the ratio of low-mass:high-mass stellar masses and sizes. This suggests that cloud size is determined by stellar properties, not local physical phenomena in the wind.Comment: 21 pages, including 14 figures and 8 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Observations and radiative transfer modelling of a massive dense cold core in G333

    Cold massive cores are one of the earliest manifestations of high mass star formation. Following the detection of SiO emission from G333.125-0.562, a cold massive core, further investigations of the physics, chemistry and dynamics of this object has been carried out. Mopra and NANTEN2 molecular line profile observations, Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) line and continuum emission maps, and Spitzer 24 and 70 \mum images were obtained. These new data further constrain the properties of this prime example of the very early stages of high mass star formation. A model for the source was constructed and compared directly with the molecular line data using a 3D molecular line transfer code - MOLLIE. The ATCA data reveal that G333.125-0.562 is composed of two sources. One of the sources is responsible for the previously detected molecular outflow and is detected in the Spitzer 24 and 70 \mum band data. Turbulent velocity widths are lower than other more active regions of G333 which reflects the younger evolutionary stage and/or lower mass of this core. The molecular line modelling requires abundances of the CO isotopes that strongly imply heavy depletion due to freeze-out of this species onto dust grains. The principal cloud is cold, moderately turbulent and possesses an outflow which indicates the presence of a central driving source. The secondary source could be an even less evolved object as no apparent associations with continuum emissions at (far-)infrared wavelengths.Comment: 10 pages, accepted to MNRA

    ANTERIOR CERVICAL SURGICAL RETRACTOR DESIGN

    INTRODUCTION During anterior cervical surgeries such as discectomies and corpectomies (removal of the disc separating two vertebrae and removal of the vertebral body itself, respectively1), surgeons implement a retractor device to broaden the view of the spinal area on which they are operating.  The current devices have flaws; including a lack of stability, complicated mechanisms, multiple pieces, or difficulty stacking, and a new retractor is needed.  Stacking, occurs in a multiple level surgery, when more than two or more devices are needed simultaneously to hold the area open.  Our design utilizes the distraction screw to stabilize the retractor in position, without the impediment of the device becoming an obstacle for the surgeons to manoeuvre around. METHODS Based on the expertise of the experienced surgeons, multiple models will be drawn.  The most practical concept will then be developed on autoCAD software.  The lower width of the blades uses a simple rotation-linear motion system.  Meanwhile, the upper part of the blade is rotated about the lower part, allowing the blade to be used at an angle. RESULTS A physical model of the device (as seen in Figure 1 below) has yet to be printed and tested.  Nevertheless, the new model is placed within the patient, allowing the surgeons to work without worrying about the device being an obstruction.  The blades are angled wider at the top and narrower at the bottom), making it easier for the surgeons’ hands to fit in the small void in the patient’s neck. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Since a prototype has not been created or clinically tested yet, all results and conclusions are merely speculations.  Our new device is: simple to use, less obstructive, and able to provide a broader view of the operating area.  In addition, in the rare event that these longer blades require stacking, it is very simple to implement.  The surgeon will simply place a second retractor on the second distraction screw. Since every patient is a different size, the blades must be interchangeable.  This way the surgeon can choose what length and height he/she wants the blade to be for each surgery.  Similar to the previous devices, the blades are curved at the bottom with teeth; this helps the device bite into the soft tissue and minimize slipping.  The blades will be made of titanium, which is strong, radiolucent, and easy to sterilize

    Effect of stem reserve mobilization on grain filling under drought stress conditions in recombinant inbred population of wheat

    Pre-anthesis carbon assimilation of stem reserves is considered as an important source for grain filling during post anthesis drought stresses that inhibit photosynthesis. 175 RILs from cross (C518/2*PBW343) along with check cultivars were evaluated for stem reserve mobilization under irrigated and rainfed conditions. These two cultivars belonging to distinct adaptation mechanism, offer several morpho -physiological and biochemical con-trasts. C 518 is tall and adapted to low input rainfed conditions whereas PBW 343 is semi -dwarf and input re-sponsive. Further C 518 is known for better stem reserves on account of larger peduncle and strong commitment to grain filling due to effective stem reserve mobilization. The parents and the RIL population was tested for stem reserve mobilization by defoliation of flag leaf and second leaf at anthesis under irrigated and rainfed environments. Evaluated entries differed significantly (p<0.001) for reduction in 1000 grain weight under defoliation (TGWL). Percent reduction in 1000 grain weight ranged from 4.4 % to 39.6 % under irrigated environment and 3.2 % to 35.0 under rainfed condition. A significant positive correlation (r = +0.357) between stem reserve mobilization and peduncle length was observed under rainfed condition. Tested RILs vary individually for stem reserve mobilization when subjected to removal of flag leaf and second leaf inhibiting the photosynthesis. The genotypes with better stem reserve mobilization based on 1000 grain weight in the absence of photosynthesis may also provide relative tolerance to drought

    The Impact of the Media Portrayal of Coeliac Disease: A Qualitative Study

    Background: Coeliac disease (CD) is a topic that has gained momentum in recent years due to an increase in the rates of diagnosis and a rise in the number of people following a gluten-free diet (GFD). Previous studies have shown the ability of the media to influence the behavior of the public, particularly in relation to healthcare. The media portrayal of CD, and its significance, has not yet been explored. Objectives: This study aims to describe and analyze the nature of the media coverage of CD. The implications of the nature of messages should be considered, and any temporal change in content explored. Methods: A document analysis of local and national UK newspaper articles over three weeks, from May 2(nd) to May 22(nd), 2016, was conducted, ensuring coverage of articles from Coeliac Awareness Week (commencing May 9(th)). Articles containing instances of CD-related language were collected by Kantar Media ([London, UK] a media intelligence company) for their client - Coeliac UK (Buckinghamshire, UK), and analyzed using a combination of thematic and content analysis techniques. An inductive approach was used to code articles into themes, with frequency data also presented. Results: Four hundred eighty-eight articles were included in the analysis, with 233, 117, and 138 articles in weeks one, two, and three, respectively. Six overarching themes were identified: events around Awareness Week and food content noted as gluten-free (GF), as well as raising awareness, encouraging people to seek help, and other health implications and perceptions of CD and the GFD, of which a significant proportion consisted of articles by Coeliac UK. The increasing popularity of the GFD emerged as a theme, encompassing the growth of the GF industry and celebrity endorsements. Notably, positively and negatively framed articles were identified, with most instances of negative articles occurring in week three. Conclusions: Coeliac Awareness Week was found to have had an influence on the content of newspaper articles, given the increase in the number of negative articles in week three and the significantly higher number of articles in week one. This mixed messaging was considered to negatively impact the potential and current patients with CD, especially in relation to GFD adherence and diagnosis rates.
