“We Can Do This At Our School!” Place-based Education, Literacy, & Learning

    Get PDF
This article highlights the power of using place-based education (PBE) in a K-8 school to support and extend students\u27 literacy and learning. Through PBE, teachers learn to use their local places such as playgrounds, neighborhoods, parks, streams, forests, and urban centers as contexts to make connections and facilitate learning. Moreover, as seen in the examples provided throughout this article, PBE empowers teachers and students to study and read the world, integrate knowledge across disciplines, write for authentic purposes and audiences, create and share narratives connected to local places, and engage in and share research. As a result, students’ excitement for learning grows as they see their school grounds and community as an extension of their classrooms, with access to more texts, learning, and opportunities for positive impacts

Subsampling of large light trap catches of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

    Get PDF
Analyses of 2 light trap catches comprising 6 041 and 1 598 Culicoides showed that the reliability of subsampling such catches increased with subsample size, while the subsampling error decreased with an increase in the number of individuals per species present in a subsample. Subsamples comprising approximately 500 Culicoides are deemed sufficient for comparing population densities between sites and sampling occasions and also give an acceptable indication of relative species abundance at a site. It is recommended that species for which the mean number of specimens in subsamples originating from 3 catches at a site is less than 7, should not be included in biometric analyses aimed at comparisons of population densities. For all other species a test level of 1% rather than 5% should be used for such comparisons. When species ratios obtained from subsampled catches are employed as indicators of abundance, the chi-squared test should be utilized at a 1% level if the ratios originate from 3 catches at a site and at a 0,1% level if only one catch per site is made. Due to poor representativeness of small catches, it is suggested that species for which fewer than 7 individuals are present in a single subsample, be excluded from chi-squared tests. A 5-point procedure for subsampling a large light trap collection of Culicoides is given. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi. Behavioral Health and Performance Operations During the Space Shuttle Program

    Get PDF
Prior to the Columbia STS 107 disaster in 2003, the Johnson Space Center s Behavioral Health and Performance Group (BHP) became involved in Space Shuttle Operations on an as needed basis, occasionally acting as a consultant and primarily addressing crew-crew personality conflicts. The BHP group also assisted with astronaut selection at every selection cycle beginning in 1991. Following STS 107, an event that spawned an increased need of behavioral health support to STS crew members and their dependents, BHP services to the Space Shuttle Program were enhanced beginning with the STS 114 Return to Flight mission in 2005. These services included the presence of BHP personnel at STS launches and landings for contingency support, a BHP briefing to the entire STS crew at L-11 months, a private preflight meeting with the STS Commander at L-9 months, and the presence of a BHP consultant at the L-1.5 month Family Support Office briefing to crew and family members. The later development of an annual behavioral health assessment of all active astronauts also augmented BHP s Space Shuttle Program specific services, allowing for private meetings with all STS crew members before and after each mission. The components of each facet of these BHP Space Shuttle Program support services will be presented, along with valuable lessons learned, and with recommendations for BHP involvement in future short duration space mission

Quality of collaboration and information handovers in palliative care: a survey study on the perspectives of nurses in the Southwest Region of the Netherlands

    Get PDF
Background: When patients receiving palliative care are transferred between care settings, adequate collaboration and information exchange between health care professionals is necessary to ensure continuity, efficiency and safety of care. Several studies identified deficits in communication and information exchange between care settings. Aim of this study was to get insight in the quality of collaboration and information exchange in palliative care from the perspectives of nurses. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional regional survey study among nurses working in different care settings. Nurses were approached via professional networks and media. Respondents were asked questions about collaboration in palliative care in general and about their last deceased patient. Potential associations between quality scores for collaboration and information handovers and characteristics of respondents or patients were tested with Pearson’s chi-square test. Results: A total of 933 nurses filled in the questionnaire. Nurses working in nursing homes were least positive about inter-organizational collaboration. Forty-six per cent of all nurses had actively searched for such collaboration in the last year. For their last deceased patient, 10% of all nurses had not received the information handover in time, 33% missed information they needed. An adequate information handover was positively associated with timeliness and completeness of the information and the patient being well-informed, not with procedural characteristics. Conclusion: Nurses report that collaboration between care settings and information exchange in palliative care is suboptimal. This study suggests that health care organizations should give more attention to shared professionalization towards inter-organizational collaboration among nurses in order to facilitate high-quality palliative care

Clinical evaluation of glucagon by continuous infusion in the treatment of low cardiac output states

A continuous infusion of glucagon in an average dose of 4 mg. per hour over several days produced distinct improvement in the clinical state of 12 of 16 patients. Improvement was noted by an increase in blood pressure and urinary output and decrease in dyspnea, pulmonary rales, diaphoresis, and peripheral edema when present. Serum potassium must be carefully monitored. The rise in blood glucose has not been a clinical problem. No cardiac arrhythmias were induced by glucagon, and as cardiac function improved, the heart rate usually decreased. Nausea was the most frequent side effect, but no toxic effects or tachyphylaxis were observed. Long-term therapy with glucagon infusion is both safe and highly efficacious in selected patients with severe cardiovascular disease states and is the treatment of choice in cardiac decompensation secondary to beta-blocking agents.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32778/1/0000151.pd

Diabetes conversation map - A novel tool for diabetes management self-efficacy among type 2 diabetes patients in Pakistan: A randomized controlled trial

Background: This study aimed to measure the effect of diabetes education using the novel method of "diabetes conversation map (DCM)"as compared to routine counselling (RC) on diabetes management self-efficacy (DMSE) among patients living with type 2 diabetes in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: A parallel arm randomized controlled trial among patients with type 2 diabetes aged 30-60 years, with HbA1c > 7%, diagnosed for at least 5 yrs., was conducted at the national institute of diabetes and endocrinology in Karachi, Pakistan. A total 123 type 2 diabetes patients were randomized into DCM (n = 62) or RC (n = 61). Four weekly diabetes control sessions of 40 min each using the DCM or RC was provided. DMSE was measured using a validated Urdu language DMSE tool at baseline and after three months of the randomization. Change in DMSE and HbA1c levels within groups (pre-post) and between the groups after 3 months of enrollment was compared. Results: Baseline characteristics except HbA1c were similar between the two arms. After 3 months of enrollment, there was no change in the DMSE score in the RC arm however, significant increase in DMSE score was noted in the DCM arm (P = < 0.001). The average difference (95% confidence interval) in DMSE score between the DCM and RC arm was 33.7(27.3, 40.0; p = < 0.001) after 3 months of the enrollment. Difference in HbA1c within groups was not significant. Conclusions: DCM significantly improved DMSE among type 2 diabetes patients in a developing country setting like Pakistan. Healthcare workers caring for type 2 diabetes patients need to be trained on DCM to effectively utilize this novel tool for educating diabetes patients. Trial registration: This trial was prospectively registered. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03747471. Date of registration: Nov 20. 2018
