    Embedding variables in finite dimensional models

    Global problems associated with the transformation from the Arnowitt, Deser and Misner (ADM) to the Kucha\v{r} variables are studied. Two models are considered: The Friedmann cosmology with scalar matter and the torus sector of the 2+1 gravity. For the Friedmann model, the transformations to the Kucha\v{r} description corresponding to three different popular time coordinates are shown to exist on the whole ADM phase space, which becomes a proper subset of the Kucha\v{r} phase spaces. The 2+1 gravity model is shown to admit a description by embedding variables everywhere, even at the points with additional symmetry. The transformation from the Kucha\v{r} to the ADM description is, however, many-to-one there, and so the two descriptions are inequivalent for this model, too. The most interesting result is that the new constraint surface is free from the conical singularity and the new dynamical equations are linearization stable.     Your place or mine? The neural dynamics of personally familiar scene recognition suggests category independent familiarity encoding.

    Recognizing a stimulus as familiar is an important capacity in our everyday life. Recent investigation of visual processes has led to important insights into the nature of the neural representations of familiarity for human faces. Still, little is known about how familiarity affects the neural dynamics of non-face stimulus processing. Here we report the results of an EEG study, examining the representational dynamics of personally familiar scenes. Participants viewed highly variable images of their own apartments and unfamiliar ones, as well as personally familiar and unfamiliar faces. Multivariate pattern analyses were used to examine the time course of differential processing of familiar and unfamiliar stimuli. Time-resolved classification revealed that familiarity is decodable from the EEG data similarly for scenes and faces. The temporal dynamics showed delayed onsets and peaks for scenes as compared to faces. Familiarity information, starting at 200 ms, generalized across stimulus categories and led to a robust familiarity effect. In addition, familiarity enhanced category representations in early (250-300 ms) and later (>400 ms) processing stages. Our results extend previous face familiarity results to another stimulus category and suggest that familiarity as a construct can be understood as a general, stimulus-independent processing step during recognition

    The metabolism of anabolic-androgenic steroids in the greyhound

    BACKGROUND Effective control of the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) in animal sports is essential in order to ensure both animal welfare and integrity. In order to better police their use in Australian and New Zealand greyhound racing, thorough metabolic studies have been carried out on a range of registered human and veterinary AASs available in the region. RESULTS Canine metabolic data are presented for the AASs boldenone, danazol, ethylestrenol, mesterolone, methandriol, nandrolone and norethandrolone. The principal Phase I metabolic processes observed were the reduction of A-ring unsaturations and/or 3-ketones with either 3α,5β- or 3β,5α-stereochemistry, the oxidation of secondary 17β-hydroxyl groups and 16α-hydroxylation. The Phase II β-glucuronylation of sterol metabolites was extensive. CONCLUSION The presented data have enabled the effective analysis of AASs and their metabolites in competition greyhound urine samples.Australian Research Council LP077483

    Multimodal Dependent Type Theory

    We introduce MTT, a dependent type theory which supports multiple modalities. MTT is parametrized by a mode theory which specifies a collection of modes, modalities, and transformations between them. We show that different choices of mode theory allow us to use the same type theory to compute and reason in many modal situations, including guarded recursion, axiomatic cohesion, and parametric quantification. We reproduce examples from prior work in guarded recursion and axiomatic cohesion, thereby demonstrating that MTT constitutes a simple and usable syntax whose instantiations intuitively correspond to previous handcrafted modal type theories. In some cases, instantiating MTT to a particular situation unearths a previously unknown type theory that improves upon prior systems. Finally, we investigate the metatheory of MTT. We prove the consistency of MTT and establish canonicity through an extension of recent type-theoretic gluing techniques. These results hold irrespective of the choice of mode theory, and thus apply to a wide variety of modal situations

    Structural polymorphism of intramolecular quadruplex of human telomeric DNA: effect of cations, quadruplex-binding drugs and flanking sequences

    G-quadruplex structures formed in the telomeric DNA are thought to play a role in the telomere function. Drugs that stabilize the G-quadruplexes were shown to have anticancer effects. The structures formed by the basic telomeric quadruplex-forming unit G3(TTAG3)3 were the subject of multiple studies. Here, we employ 125I-radioprobing, a method based on analysis of the distribution of DNA breaks after decay of 125I incorporated into one of the nucleotides, to determine the fold of the telomeric DNA in the presence of TMPyP4 and telomestatin, G-quadruplex-binding ligands and putative anticancer drugs. We show that d[G3(TTAG3)3125I-CT] adopts basket conformation in the presence of NaCl and that addition of either of the drugs does not change this conformation of the quadruplex. In KCl, the d[G3(TTAG3)3125I-CT] is most likely present as a mixture of two or more conformations, but addition of the drugs stabilize the basket conformation. We also show that d[G3(TTAG3)3125I-CT] with a 5′-flanking sequence folds into (3+1) type 2 conformation in KCl, while in NaCl it adopts a novel (3+1) basket conformation with a diagonal central loop. The results demonstrate the structural flexibility of the human telomeric DNA; and show how cations, quadruplex-binding drugs and flanking sequences can affect the conformation of the telomeric quadruplex

    Mitochondrial myopathy presenting as fibromyalgia: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, we describe for the first time the case of a woman who met the diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia, did not respond to therapy for that disorder, and was subsequently diagnosed by biochemical and genetic studies with a mitochondrial myopathy. Treatment of the mitochondrial myopathy resulted in resolution of symptoms. This case demonstrates that mitochondrial myopathy may present in an adult with a symptom complex consistent with fibromyalgia.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>Our patient was a 41-year-old Caucasian woman with symptoms of fatigue, exercise intolerance, headache, and multiple trigger points. Treatment for fibromyalgia with a wide spectrum of medications including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants, gabapentin and pregabalin had no impact on her symptoms. A six-minute walk study demonstrated an elevated lactic acid level (5 mmol/L; normal < 2 mmol/L). Biochemical and genetic studies from a muscle biopsy revealed a mitochondrial myopathy. Our patient was started on a compound of coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) 200 mg, creatine 1000 mg, carnitine 200 mg and folic acid 1 mg to be taken four times a day. She gradually showed significant improvement in her symptoms over a course of several months.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This case demonstrates that adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia may have their symptom complex related to an adult onset mitochondrial myopathy. This is an important finding since treatment of mitochondrial myopathy resulted in resolution of symptoms.</p
