    Determination Of The Absolute Structure Factor For The Forbidden (222) Reflection In Silicon Using 0.12-γ Rays

    A room-temperature determination of the absolute structure factor for the forbidden (222) reflection in silicon has been conducted at the University of Missouri Research Reactor with 103-keV gamma rays. The measured structure factor of F(222)=1.456 is in excellent agreement with five of the earlier intensity measurements and is significantly different from any value determined using Pendellösung techniques. An increase in accuracy over previous intensity measurements by a factor of between 2 and 10 has been achieved and is made possible through the use of monoenergetic, short-wavelength gamma rays, which allow absolute measurements to be made in Laue geometry on relatively thick crystals (∼1 mm) without encountering extinction problems. © 1982 The American Physical Society

    Measuring Chronic Multidimensional Poverty: A Counting Approach

    How can indices of multidimensional poverty be adapted to produce measures that quantify both the joint incidence of multiple deprivations and their chronicity? This paper adopts a new approach to the measurement of chronic multidimensional poverty. It relies on the counting approach of Alkire and Foster (2011) for the measurement of multidimensional poverty in each time period and then on the duration approach of Foster (2009) for the measurement of multidimensional poverty persistence across time. The proposed indices are sensitive both to (i) the share of dimensions in which people are deprived and (ii) the duration of their multidimensional poverty experience. A related set of indices is also proposed to measure transient poverty. The behaviour of the proposed two families is analysed using a relevant set of axioms. An empirical illustration is provided with a Chilean panel dataset spanning the period from 1996 to 2006

    OpenMutt - 3D Printed Robotic Quadruped

    Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking a robotic dog as a research avenue for different biomechanical designs, control systems, and robotic designs for experimentation and study. The quadruped is based on several open-source platforms including James Bruton’s openDogV3, the MIT Mini-Cheetah, and the NYU Open Dynamic Robot Initiative. The implementation of this research will begin with a quarter model, consisting of a singular leg from the hip to the foot. The leg will be mounted on a benchtop test stand that allows for controlled movement and accessible experimentation. The leg will be separate from the full-model quadruped strictly for experimentation and any full-model revisions. The OpenMutt’s quarter model uses 3 Brushless DC Electric Motors (BLDC) attached to 3 cycloidal gearboxes as its main form of actuation. The majority of parts were manufactured using Polylactic Acid (PLA). Some leg testing has already been completed, but a synchronized movement is yet to be completed

    OpenMutt - 3D Printed Robotic Quadruped

    The objective of the OpenMutt project is to build a modular, open-source quadruped as a multidisciplinary research testbed for students and faculty. The design is based on proven models, including the MIT Mini-Cheetah, NYU Open Dynamic Robot, and Bruton’s openDogV3, with modifications to decrease manufacturing time and cost. OpenMutt utilizes 12 brushless motors, each attached to a cycloidal gearbox for actuation. The quarter model has three degrees of freedom, translational and rotational. A remote control will be used for general movement with impedance and PID controllers for torque and joint control. The majority of parts were additively manufactured with Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM) printers using Polylactic Acid(PLA) and Thermoplastic Polyurethane(TPU). A power supply will be used for quarter model testing, while the full model will use an onboard battery with the battery-management system (BMS). Due to the 13:1 gear ratio of the cycloidal gearbox, motors like the ones selected are adaptable to the model.     The Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index

    The Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) is a new survey-based index designed to measure the empowerment, agency, and inclusion of women in the agricultural sector. The WEAI was initially developed as a tool to reflect women’s empowerment that may result from the United States government’s Feed the Future Initiative, which commissioned the development of the WEAI. The WEAI can also be used more generally to assess the state of empowerment and gender parity in agriculture, to identify key areas in which empowerment needs to be strengthened, and to track progress over time. The WEAI is an aggregate index, reported at the country or regional level, based on individual-level data collected by interviewing men and women within the same households. The WEAI comprises two subindexes. The first assesses the degree to which women are empowered in five domains of empowerment (5DE) in agriculture. It reflects the percentage of women who are empowered and, among those who are not, the percentage of domains in which women enjoy adequate achievements. These domains are (1) decisions about agricultural production, (2) access to and decision-making power about productive resources, (3) control of use of income, (4) leadership in the community, and (5) time allocation. The second subindex (the Gender Parity Index [GPI]) measures gender parity. The GPI reflects the percentage of women who are empowered or whose achievements are at least as high as the men in their households. For those households that have not achieved gender parity, the GPI shows the empowerment gap that needs to be closed for women to reach the same level of empowerment as men. This technical paper documents the development of the WEAI and presents pilot data from Bangladesh, Guatemala, and Uganda, so that researchers and practitioners seeking to use the index in their own work would understand how the survey questionnaires were developed and piloted, how the qualitative case studies were undertaken, how the index was constructed, how various indicators were validated, and how it can be used in other settings

    A High Power Density Power System Electronics for NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

    A high power density, modular and state-of-the-art Power System Electronics (PSE) has been developed for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission. This paper addresses the hardware architecture and performance, the power handling capabilities, and the fabrication technology. The PSE was developed by NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and is the central location for power handling and distribution of the LRO spacecraft. The PSE packaging design manages and distributes 2200W of solar array input power in a volume less than a cubic foot. The PSE architecture incorporates reliable standard internal and external communication buses, solid state circuit breakers and LiIon battery charge management. Although a single string design, the PSE achieves high reliability by elegantly implementing functional redundancy and internal fault detection and correction. The PSE has been environmentally tested and delivered to the LRO spacecraft for the flight Integration and Test. This modular design is scheduled to flight in early 2009 on board the LRO and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) spacecrafts and is the baseline architecture for future NASA missions such as Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS)

    Crystal Perfection Of HgI2 Studied By Neutron And Gamma-ray Diffraction

    The crystalline perfection of wire sawn pieces of vapor grown single crystals of mercuric iodide was compared with the perfection of (00l) cleaved sections of the same crystal from which nuclear radiation detectors have been fabricated. The crystalline perfection was studied using neutron and gamma-ray diffraction rocking curves. Most of the gamma-ray data were obtained using a high intensity source of 153Sm gamma rays with a wavelength of λ = 0.12 Å. Some of the data were obtained using highly penetrating 198Au gamma rays with a shorter wavelength of λ = 0.03 Å. The neutrons had a wavelength of λ = 1.07 Å. It was found that, in terms of the mosaic spread of the crystals, the cleaved detector plates have a much lower crystalline perfection than the thicker uncleaved detector plates. At the same time, the results show that for detectors cut from the same crystal, the one with the lower spectral resolution for radiation detection will also have a lower perfection and larger width of the gamma-ray rocking curve. These results suggest consideration should be given to alternative fabrication procedures for HgI2 nuclear radiation detectors

    Anaesthesia and PET of the Brain

    Although drugs have been used to administer general anaesthesia for more than a century and a half, relatively little was known until recently about the molecular and cellular effects of the anaesthetic agents and the neurobiology of anaesthesia. Positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies have played a valuable role in improving this knowledge. PET studies using 11C-flumazenil binding have been used to demonstrate that the molecular action of some, but not all, of the current anaesthetic agents is mediated via the GABAA receptor. Using different tracers labelled with 18F, 11C and 15O, PET studies have shown the patterns of changes in cerebral metabolism and blood flow associated with different intravenous and volatile anaesthetic agents. Within classes of volatile agents, there are minor variations in patterns. More profound differences are found between classes of agents. Interestingly, all agents cause alterations in the blood flow and metabolism of the thalamus, providing strong support for the hypothesis that the anaesthetic agents interfere with consciousness by interfering with thalamocortical communication.</p
