THE EFFECT OF STEREOTYPE ON COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF FEMALE COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE
This study investigated the effect stereotypes have on cognitive performance. A between-subjects experimental design was utilized in the study. Forty participants from the senior secondary two (SS2) of Chapel Secondary School Ilorin took part in the study, and their cognitive performance in the light of exposure to a stereotype was
measured. Four hypotheses were tested. Using the t-test for
independent samples, the findings of the experiment showed that males performed better than females on a mathematics test when exposed to stereotype (t=2.688, df=l8, p<O.OS). The study also found that males who were exposed to stereotype performed better than males who were not exposed to stereotype (t=2.998, df=l8, p< 0.05).
However, there was no significant difference in the performance of females who were exposed to stereotype and those who were not (t=2.740, df=l8, p>O.OS). Stereotypes have been identified to affect the way people see things and the way they interpret certain behaviours of
other individuals or groups. Therefore understanding the nature of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination is the first step in combating these practices

Delay sensitive and power-aware SMDP-based connection admission control mechanism in cognitive radio sensor networks
© 2017 Elsevier B.V. Due to the opportunistically resource usage of users in cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs), the availability of network resources is highly variable. Therefore, admission control is an essential mechanism to manage the traffic of cognitive radio users in order to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) requirements of applications. In this study, a connection admission control (CAC) mechanism is introduced to satisfy the requirements of delay sensitivity and power consumption awareness. This proposed mechanism is modeled through a semi Markov decision process (SMDP) and a linear programming problem is derived with the aim of obtaining the optimal policy to control the traffic of CRSNs and achieving maximum reward. The number of required channels at each network state is estimated through a graph coloring approach. An end to end delay constraint is defined for the optimization problem which is inspired from Kleinrock independence approximation. Furthermore, a power-aware weighting method is proposed for this mechanism. We conduct different simulation-based scenarios to investigate the performance of the proposed mechanism. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of this SMDP-based mechanism in comparison to the last CAC mechanism in CRSNs
Follow-up observations of pulsating subdwarf B stars: Multisite campaigns on PG 1618+563B and PG 0048+091
We present follow-up observations of pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) stars as part
of our efforts to resolve the pulsation spectra for use in asteroseismological
analyses. This paper reports on multisite campaigns of the pulsating sdB stars
PG 1618+563B and PG 0048+091. Data were obtained from observatories placed
around the globe for coverage from all longitudes. For PG 1618+563B, our
five-site campaign uncovered a dichotomy of pulsation states: Early during the
campaign the amplitudes and phases (and perhaps frequencies) were quite
variable while data obtained late in the campaign were able to fully resolve
five stable pulsation frequencies. For PG 0048+091, our five-site campaign
uncovered a plethora of frequencies with short pulsation lifetimes. We find
them to have observed properties consistent with stochastically excited
oscillations, an unexpected result for subdwarf B stars. We discuss our
findings and their impact on subdwarf B asteroseismology.Comment: 50 pages including 17 figures and 10 tables. Accepted for publication

Coexistence of carcinoma and tuberculosis in one breast
which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Background: The coexistence of breast cancer and tuberculosis is very rare. This can create a dilemma in the diagnosis and treatment as there are no pathognomonic symptoms or signs to distinguish both diseases. Case presentation: A female patient was seen in the breast clinic for a right breast lump. Clinical examination and investigation confirmed cancer and tuberculosis of the right breast. She underwent right mastectomy and axillary clearance and received chemo and radiotherapy. Unfortunately, she died of wide spread metastases. Conclusion: The simultaneous occurrence of these two major illnesses in the breast can lead to many problems regarding diagnosis and treatment. Though rare, surgeons, pathologists and radiologists should be aware of such condition. An EORTC Phase II study of caspofungin as first-line therapy of invasive aspergillosis in haematological patients
Objectives Caspofungin was evaluated as first-line monotherapy of invasive aspergillosis (IA) in patients with haematological malignancies and undergoing autologous transplants. Methods Adults with proven or probable IA, defined strictly according to EORTC-MSG criteria, were eligible. Those with possible IA were enrolled, but were not evaluable for efficacy unless upgraded to proven/probable disease within 7 days of registration based on investigations performed within 48 h after enrolment. Caspofungin dosage was 70 mg (day 1) followed by 50 mg/day. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with complete or partial response at the end of caspofungin therapy in the modified intention to treat (MITT) group; secondary endpoints were response and survival at day 84 and safety. Results In the MITT group (n = 61), 75% of patients had cancer not in remission (relapsing or refractory), 85% were neutropenic at enrolment and 49% had a Karnofsky score of ≤50. At end of treatment, 1 and 19 patients had complete and partial response, respectively [success rate 33% (20/61)], 9 (15%) achieved stabilization and 31 (51%) had disease progression. One patient was not evaluable. The 6 and 12 week survival rates were 66% (40/61) and 53% (32/60), respectively. Baseline characteristics associated with survival at day 84 were an underlying disease in remission (not relapsing or refractory) and Karnofsky score. Recovery from neutropenia at the end of treatment was also significantly associated with survival. No serious drug-related adverse events or discontinuations due to drug-related adverse events were observed. Conclusions Caspofungin provided an observed response rate compatible with the null hypothesis of a true response rate of ≤35%. Underlying disease-related factors had a major impact on result
Dietary elimination of children with food protein induced gastrointestinal allergy – micronutrient adequacy with and without a hypoallergenic formula?
Background:
The cornerstone for management of Food protein-induced gastrointestinal allergy (FPGIA) is dietary exclusion; however the micronutrient intake of this population has been poorly studied. We set out to determine the dietary intake of children on an elimination diet for this food allergy and hypothesised that the type of elimination diet and the presence of a hypoallergenic formula (HF) significantly impacts on micronutrient intake.
Method:
A prospective observational study was conducted on children diagnosed with FPIGA on an exclusion diet who completed a 3 day semi-quantitative food diary 4 weeks after commencing the diet. Nutritional intake where HF was used was compared to those without HF, with or without a vitamin and mineral supplement (VMS).
Results:
One-hundred-and-five food diaries were included in the data analysis: 70 boys (66.7%) with median age of 21.8 months [IQR: 10 - 67.7]. Fifty-three children (50.5%) consumed a HF and the volume of consumption was correlated to micronutrient intake. Significantly (p <0.05) more children reached their micronutrient requirements if a HF was consumed. In those without a HF, some continued not to achieve requirements in particular for vitamin D and zinc, in spite of VMS.
Conclusion:
This study points towards the important micronutrient contribution of a HF in children with FPIGA. Children, who are not on a HF and without a VMS, are at increased risk of low intakes in particular vitamin D and zinc. Further studies need to be performed, to assess whether dietary intake translates into actual biological deficiencies
Dynamic inundation simulation of storm water interaction between sewer system and overland flows

The model computes, not only the overland runoff and the water overflow through manholes where surface runoff exceeds the capacity of storm sewers, but also the bidirectional flow interactions between sewers and overland runoff. The model was verified by a typhoon event in Nov. 2000, which resulted in serious inundation in the Mucha area of Taipei City. The result shows that the present model indeed improves simulation accuracy over the earlier model, and can be used to provide a more reliable flood mitigation design
The multiperiodicity of the Doradus stars HD 224945 and HD 224638 as detected from a multisite campaign
We discuss new photometric data collected on the gamma Dor variables HD
224945 and HD 224638. Multiperiodicity was detected in both stars, thanks to
the clear spectral window of a multisite campaign that involved five
observatories. HD 224945 shows the shortest period among the gamma Dor stars,
i.e., 0.3330 d. The pulsation behaviour is very different: HD 224945 displays a
set of frequencies spread over an interval much wider than that of HD 224638.
We clearly found evidence for amplitude variations in the excited modes by
comparing data from different years. HD 224945 and HD 224638 are among the best
examples of Dor stars that show multimode pulsations, which make them
